Best DEAD Rivalries (or rivalries of the past...)

Wasn't 1054 the Great Schism? So, the Orthodox should be screaming "Remember 1054" whenever it comes to a reconciliation of the Eastern & Western churches.

Knew about the football game (there's a great photo of Pete Rose playing running back for West Hi in one of these games out there) but not the basketball tradition. Would this have been the first game or just preseason (as I am sure there were quite a few guys who played both sports-then baseball in the spring)?
First real game I believe they played in at The Pit. They did that while I was manager for Bacon back in the early 80s

Withrow v Walnut Hills
Withrow v Woodward
Withrow v Taft
Withrow v Western Hills
Withrow v Aiken
Withrow v Hughes
Withrow v Central/Courter Tech

Woodward vs. Hughes is the oldest rivalry, but I'm sure Hughes has a decided advantage head-to-head.

Just about every year from about 1920 to 1940, the winner between Hughes and Withrow would win the PHSL, and it was almost always the last game of the season.

Saw some of the ones for SEO/Southenrn Ohio. Here are a few that come to mind, Wheelersburg/Portsmouth. It doesn’t have the hype and history as these teams both do with Ironton but are both within the same county and don’t play anymore. Another is Waverly-Piketon, schools are separated with 6 miles and were the only 2 schools in Pike county up until 2015 when Beaver Eastern started their program. Waverly-Piketon haven’t played since 2019 and it is heavily lopsided in favor of Waverly

Yes. Prior to that the smaller McNicholas Rockets manhandled Anderson. It was always the opener in those days and Anderson was the home team year after year. A fun rivalry and a great way to annually start off the season.
I always enjoyed playing McNick. Thankfully we were able to play them in 2001 & 2002 after the annual game vs. St. X in week 10 was cancelled. Last game vs. St. X was 2000, and I would have preferred to play them Jr. and Sr. year rather than McNick...BUT, it was nice playing McNick and all of the kids I grew up playing Forest Hills and knothole baseball with.

I mean, if you are familiar with like the Orthodox Church. Byzantine Catholics are basically orthodox Christians who follow the Pope.

There are not many Orthodox Christians here in America of course. They are kind of more an eastern European thing. They have not caught on to the idea of maintaining schools linked to their churches in America, the way Catholics, and now even some Evangelicals have.

I was unaware of "Byzantine Catholic" Schools ever being a thing either. I mean most of those churches, like the orthodox churches are very much ethnic based, and tend to be attended by 1st and 2nd generation immigrants from eastern europe. Their children/grandchildren tended to be more integrated with American culture, and kind of didnt really identify with the church of their parents and grandparants, I feel like. Religion for them was much more ethnically linked I feel like. Either way, there really wasn't a ton of demand for making schools.

But still, I know in the catholic camp, most of the Catholics from Ohio, are descended from ethnic backgrounds. You got the Irish, the German Catholics, and like the Italians. And they have kind of kept their catholic identity, until the last couple generations, when church attendance in America in general cratered. And even then they are still culturally catholic at least, so they still go to the catholic schools.

IDK, honestly. Would The orthodox/Byzantine Catholic Churches be stronger in America, had they set up their own parochial schools? Or was their inability to engage the youth in their churches responsiblefor their being unable to keep open, or even establish schools?

It would be cool to have Orthodox religious high schools though as rivals to the catholic schools. I am well aware of the historical tensions between Catholics and Orthodox, going back 1000 years.

Definitely could be rivalry material.
The football field at Byzantine is now where giant eagle is on snow Rd and broadview Rd is...was a poor lite field

Correct, St. Ignatius never joined.

The teams I remember: Chanel, St. Joseph, Lake Catholic, Cathedral Latin, St. Edward and Padua. I believe LC replaced Chanel when they dropped out of the conference, and the Crown was down to 4 at the very end (St. Joseph, LC, Padua, and St. Edward)
The Crown Conference existed from 1967 to 1982.

More than a holy war it would be The Battle for Constantinople (with cries from the Roman Catholics, "Remember 1054!")
For the Ortho's it would be "remember 1204". That was the 4th crusade, when thousands of Latin Roman Catholic crusaders plundered the city of Constantinople.

A rivalry that still exists but really doesn't anymore is Toledo Central Catholic vs Toledo St. Francis for the Irish Knight trophy. The rivalry started in 1959 when many former CCHS students transferred to the newly opened St. Francis de Sales. From 1959 through 1969, St, Francis won 6 and Central won 5. Central won 7 out of 10 in the 70's. But St. Francis won 8 out of 10 in the 1980's and the 1990's. When I was at Central, we had the better team on paper in '89, '90, and '91 and were the favorite (kind of like John Cooper's Ohio St. teams being undefeated 3 times in the 90's going into the Michigan game and losing all 3).

Up until 2003, the rivalry stood at St. Francis 28, Central 16. But Greg Dempsey finally won in 2004 and has never lost again. Most of the last 10 years have seen hugely lopsided scores (2019 being the exception when St. Francis was very stout on defense).

We can talk ad nauseum about the reasons. The biggest are the movement of population from central Toledo to the suburbs, the decline of the Catholic schools in Toledo, the decline of football in general (fewer kids playing and the ones who do are way better and don't want to be on a bad team so they move to a good one---meaning fewer kids are willing to be team fillers anymore), vouchers allowing families to send their kids wherever they want, etc....

It is sad for the rivalry that the Irish Knight is virtually meaningless anymore. The kids playing in the game now have no idea of how important it was back in the day.

In my senior year (I was just a spectator), St. Francis was the far superior team. But Central played their best game of the season and were up 7-6 with 1:00 to go in the game. But St. Francis scored on a 4th and goal to tear the Irish hearts out. Little did we know that the rivalry would be so much different in the future.

Whatever the reasons, I wish the rivalry would mean something. Even if my beloved Irish have to lose a few times, I want the Irish Knight to mean something again.

Thinking you mean Akron Central-Hower
Absolutely not only Buchtel and Garfield should be on this list for ACS. Central Hower football has always been a absolute joke as long as I been alive. In my 4 years of high school plus my other 2 siblings there hasn't been a time where we didn't beat them by 50+. We literally would try and beat them by 77 pts because the city record was 76.

Akron East and Akron Garfield were the rivals back in the day. The usual Thanksgiving Day game city series championship game!

Central Hower was good in football when Flossie was coaching there.

Maybe so but in football this has never been considered a rivalry in my lifetime. The game was almost canceled in 96 for Ignatius because Central was that terrible. Then it was actually cancelled in 2005 (Flossie years) and replaced with Glenville because Central provided no value in computer points (look it up). The last game was 40-6. In all my time at 1040 we have never practiced a play, front, kickoff, watch film, or anything related to Central. People dreaded Central week because it was basically a bye week and the JV would play pretty much 2.5 quarters guaranteed. Hell one year the lineman and skill players swapped positions the game got so out of hand.
