2023 St. Ignatius Football

I do agree on the longer vision and I went to school with LeCharles, has always been an amazing guy. I think this could be a rough year but things could look up afterwards with sophs getting experience. Bring back the line next year with full year and coaching under them and the put Frantino back there
No way a Kyle team has that many young kids getting time. Good or bad, no way.

Really hope the kid injured on defense is ok. Outstanding player.

Agree, hoping part of it is Franzinger more inclined to pick talent over devotion to class year

This senior class has always been thinner in talent and numbers, especially on the lines, and Spellacy and Martin were the only consistent standouts from the beginning. Other kids seem to have worked hard and I think the group overall is stronger than they looked coming into the program.

Agree with PDC, this O Line group will be good after some growing pains. They won a lot of 1 on 1 matchups but also made plenty of underclassmen mental mistakes. Don’t agree with the comments on being undersized, they looked talented and physical to me accounting for class level.

A lot of guys missing on defense so hard to tell much. The line held up ok at the point of attack but didn’t generate much pressure and seems to have limited quickness. Hope the injured player is ok.

Soph Simms at WR really stood out in addition to the aforementioned lineman and Frontino. Soph LB Rivera also played well - not the biggest kid but instinctive, played fast and looked like a sure tackler.

There is decent talent overall on this team but the combination of youth and schedule could leave them with a rough record. They will take a lot of lumps along with the bright spots.

The program has talent. The issue is the talent is very young and not concentrated in one class. To be a state title contender, it will take a combination of 3 classes, and maybe even 4.

If Ignatius had a lighter schedule, the young kids could develop at a slower pace. Now they will be playing really good and even a few great teams. Lots of ups and downs coming but I believe the coaches know this and likely expect it.

What they don't expect is key injuries and already, before the first game they exist.

Generally not good form to discuss a kids injuries on these forums, but if he’s going to be out an extended period of time I suppose it would be public info soon enough. Very talented player and hoping for a speedy recovery to potentially get back on the field later this season. I still remember his father and uncle delivering newspapers in our neighborhood when I was a kid. Great family and best wishes.

Hopefully not a season ending injury. Kid plays all-out and is the stopper in that secondary.

I waited till it was talked about.
The kid is a great kid and will bounce back. He needs to know people care about him and respect him for his character and his play. Speedy recovery my man.

Question: is it legal to play with a cast on your arm? I seem to remember that it used to be verboten, as it could (theoretically) be used as a club to pound your opponent into submission or some such.

I don’t think the “hand clubs” are illegal, although it may depend on the nature of the casting (hard v. soft). We had a linebacker play with one last year for a stretch (and will likely start off with one this year). Typically a padded cast to protect a finger or small fracture to the hand.

JV numbers looked smaller but there are so many on the varsity it's hard to tell.
Frantino is bigger and has a nice arm.

Freshmen have good numbers (maybe 90) and some really nice looking players, especially on defense. (Specifically #9, 40, and 6)
The Jr. Class this year has 95 on the freshman team. Just blows my mind. Does Iggy still do A and B team schedules with that many??

Just a bit bigger than Ed’s roster. What are the JV numbers? Ours appear very low. Haven’t seen any freshman roster yet, but if you guys have 90+ then that is a very good sign in this day and age.
JV looks to be about 50 but it was hard to tell with so many held out for varsity.

No Ignatius does not do A and B games.

Both Ignatius and Ed’s have their varsity and JV rosters now posted on their websites.

The numbers:

Ignatius varsity:
Total = 83; 25 seniors + 37 juniors + 20 sophomores + 1 freshman

Ignatius JV:
Total = 66; 2 juniors + 62 sophomores (16 of which are on the varsity roster) + 2 freshmen (1 is also on the varsity roster)
-----------
St. Edward varsity:
Total = 79; 40 seniors + 36 juniors + 3 sophomores

St. Edward JV:
Total = 42; 42 sophomores (1 is also on the varsity roster)

Did I read that correctly? A freshman is on ignatius varsity roster? What position?

I found him 6’0 210lb. Does not say position?

6 sophomores starting on offense. Interesting--probably a mix of a strong sophomore class and a lack of depth among the juniors and seniors. Papesh made some unfortunate decisions with the ball last year. Hopefully he's learned from those mistakes and will be able to provide some much needed senior leadership.

Start the future now. I like the approach. Will take their lumps but be primed for a run in the coming years.

Wow... 6 sophomores starting on offense. I remember Tommy Eichenberg didn't even get a snap as a sophomore. Crazy to see what has happened to the depth over the last 5 years. Hopefully them getting experience pays off in a couple of years.

To be fair, part of it is the senior numbers way down. But, it is also good to see if the better talent plays despite class. That became a issue in recent years

On a brighter note the Cats futball team begins its quest for a sixth consecutive title this afternoon versus Avon Lake. The Cats lost a record number of players to graduation last year, so it will be interesting to see how this year's team starts out. Normally I would take Ignatius against the field for the state title, but I have my doubts about that this year,
