2020 Warren JFK Eagles

"He'll never play there"
Now that it has become pretty much common knowledge that Dom Prologo will be the next Head Coach of the team I figure it is a good time to look ahead to the upcoming season. Many people have been waiting for the 2020 as we return a lot of experience and talent on both sides of the ball, spearheaded by All-State players Cam Hollobaugh and Jesse Likens.

Offensively 3/5s of the line returns in:
JR Will Toth, JR Eddie Kiernan and 6'3" 250lb Soph Patrick Valent who could be a D1 type player if he keeps developing.

Wideouts include SR Gabe Green, SR Sejean Cuoto and 6'4" SR Nick Fordeley.

FB/QB Michael Mauro is tough as nails and look for them to use the TE more this year too.

QB/WR/RB/LB Hollobaugh is a 3 sport star that will probably go Division 1 in baseball but could be a scholarship football and basketball player too. He is a 4 year starter and a legitimate contender for DVII defensive player of the year.

RB/S/CB Likens is arguably the fastest small school back in the state and will be a contender for state titles in the 100, 200 and 400 this season. 11 of his 15 rushing TDs last year went for over 40 yds. He too is a 4 year starter and has serious interest from a majority of the Ivies and Patriot League.

Returning defensively Toth and Valent will be joined on the line by Soph Rahn Carr and SR Sal Coletti.

LBs will be Kiernan, Mauro, Hollobaugh.

DBs include Green, Fordeley, Likens and Cuoto.

The two big positions going into the summer will be deciding which decision to go at QB and filling the two O-Line spots. There have been a lot of kids that have played over yhe last 2 years so anyone that steps in has plenty of experience.

The schedule sets up for a very good run at the postseason, as usual.

There is some continuity in the staff with Coach Prologo and a couple of the other coaches that were kept, but also a renewed sense of excitement among the kids too. I think it is going to be a really big year and it should be a blast!

Who are the contenders to play QB?
Mauro and Hollobaugh for now, their are a couple others too that could be in the mix in SR John Bruce and FR Nicky Ryan. They would be very reluctant to use a freshman , he'll be a good one down the road though.

11.22 and 22.66 last year as a Soph. Hes currently ranked 4th in the state for JRs in the 60m and 5th in the 200 according to Milesplit. His speed converts well to the field too, which isn't always the case with track guys. Which you can see on tape. https://www.hudl.com/profile/9505463/Jesse-Likens

Those are definitely impressive times, especially for a Sophomore. I've seen him on film and you're right, his speed definitely translates. I don't think anyone will touch Justin Wright from Wellsville this year though. That kid is the real deal.

No, Wright will run away with it this year. 10.4s this year, mid 21s. Likens could/should place.

I agree with that. Likens indoor 60m and 200m times should translate really nicely to outdoors. I always thought running the 200m indoors was tough with those tight turns, so Likens should see some low 22's/high 21's with that.

One player I forgot to mention is JR OL/DL Nathan Bartoe. He returns after missing last season dealing with an injury. He started on the DL as a freshman and should be an absolute monster this year at around 250lbs or so, having lived in the weightroom for a year.

Having seen the team in person now I'm even more excited about the prospects for this year. They have around 45 or so on the roster and it is evident that they have taken training themselves very seriously during the lockdown. A majority of the kids have gained good muscle mass and weight. There are 4 very capable QBs, a D1 recruit at TB, very good size on the line anchored by a stud soph who will be bigtime recruit and very good and very fast skill on the outside.

Defensively they are in possibly even better shape as most of the kids got their experience there first. They return 3 four year starters, 2 three year starters and 4 or 5 kids that started games in the past including 2 that started as freshmen that couldn't play last year due to injuries.

The biggest question marks will be how they respond to the new system on offense and some of the depth from some of the younger kids. Defensively the scheme is the same and the kids are extremely smart so the transition shouldn't be too bad on offense. The leadership on this team is outstanding and I am more confident than ever of a very deep run this season. I can't wait!

Glad to hear things are better then expected. I hope to make it back and attend a few games this year.

What kind of offensive system are they planning?

The system won't be much different then they have done in the past. Run heavy out of the I, play action passing game. There will be more RPO stuff and look for the TE to be used more too. It will be more dynamic for sure.

RB/DB Jesse Likens has committed to the Air Force Academy. I believe he is the first FBS recruit for the Eagles since Anthony Elzy signed with North Carolina in 2007.

Congrats to the young man, that is outstanding.

I thought JFK had a running back/d-back go to Akron after Elzy. He was a heck of a player. I thought his last name started with a P, but it slips my mind right now.

Jared Province. You are correct. Completely forgot about him. Played safety at Akron.

Any week 3 candidates, or will it be an open week?

Kind of excited to see Howland back on the schedule. Brings back some memories.

So is JFK D-VII?

I hope so - and I hope a MAC team can meet JFK in the finals (whether D-VI or D-VII) and avenge Minster's loss in the 2016 state final.

Defensively, that JFK team had great athleticism all over the field, limiting a really good Minster offense to only a single td I believe.

Yes, they are D-7.

I have tremendous respect for the MAC schools and their fantastic breweries...lol

A match-up in the finals would be good in my book.

Yes we are D7. This team very closely resembles the 2016 team, with maybe a tad bit more athleticism and more overall team speed. They're very experienced in some aspects too, three 4 year starters and a few juniors that will be 3 year starters. I think there's a legitimate chance they reach the finals. Along with the usual suspects, ML, Trimble will be tough, Fort loramie, possibly Lima Central Catholic. Cuyahoga Hts losses a lot but they'll still be good. I'm just glad that we might actually get to see it play out on the field.

I'd be down with a JFK vs Marion Local final. JFK had some great fans from what I experienced when they met St. Henry and Minster. I think they played Delphos St. John's back in the day once or twice.

Just out of curiosity - how often does a team with a first-year hc reach the finals?

It sounds very difficult to do unless the new coach was in the system prior (like Otten at Coldwater).

Our coach has been in the system. If he was new to Coaching then I would be worried. He was the DC on the 2016 state championship team. Was on staff at Canfield teams that played for state titles. Coached directly under two hall of fame coaches. Coach Prologo is going to be fine.

Thanks for the info - and good luck to JFK.

I just left dinner with a good friend of mine. He has gotten to watch several of JFK practices. He said the kids are very excited this year and the team looks pretty sharp.
