2017 Open Weeks

Hoban has filled week 4 with West Canada Prep.

https://www.westtorontoprep.com/

West Toronto Prep is yet another American-Rules football factory from Ontario. Canada Prep Academy was first (predecessor Niagara Sports Academy), but now Football North, Football North St. Joseph's, and Royal Imperial Collegiate are joined with West Toronto Prep. There were a couple others last year that were planned but failed to get off the ground. Funny thing is they never play each other.

I am not sure if the opponent is truly Ottawa St. Joseph's. There are other St. Joseph's in Canada that could be more likely. I could be wrong about Ottawa, but the St. Joseph's in Windsor, Mississauga, & St. Joseph are all much closer.

That MaxPreps link also shows Chardon playing Ottawa St. Joseph in Week 2, but I think Chardon actually has Buffalo St. Joseph's.

That MaxPreps link also shows Steubenville playing Ottawa St. Joseph in Week 3, but I think Steubenville actually has Windsor St. Joseph's.

Funny you should mention that.

Shaker Heights' game at Brunswick is going to be moved up to the 8th, and they will be hosting Collinwood Week 4 on the 16th. Confirmed from the HC.

Interesting that John Hay and Collinwood will play 4 non-conference games now. I believe Glenville has requested a 4th non-conference game in past (they did have a few early in century) and have been told no.

Should we guess that Collinwood really did double-book Week 3 with Rocky River and Brunswick? So the Cleveland schools made things right for Brunswick by rotating a few games to fill out all the schedules?

I'll quote this here and clean up the list in first post of this thread

Vincentian Academy near Pittsburgh won't be fielding a team due to low numbers. Their opponents will all be looking for replacements. They are all small schools.

Also, Oil City (PA) is looking for a game during Week 6 (9/29-9/30). I believe they had a Buffalo area private school scheduled. They're a PA 5A school. They may look to travel.

Though Steel Valley (2A) just opened up thanks to Vincentian Academy dropping football. It's a bit of a range, but they're fairly close. Ursuline-Oil City would be a great game.

Would Cuyahoga Heights be a good fit for Sto-Rox, the team they were scheduled to play?

Would Cuyahoga Heights be a good fit for Sto-Rox, the team they were scheduled to play?

Sto-Rox is 121 males, Cuyahoga Heights is 89 males (same methodology used by OHSAA and PIAA). They'd match up fairly well. Sto-Rox is usually a tough, slightly above average team.

Here's the opponents now looking after Vincentian dropped football this season (btw, 5 seasons, went 6-38 in varsity, there's a reason for low turnout).

8/25 Sto-Rox (A) (Cuyahoga Heights would matchup well)
9/01 @ Freeport (AAA) (Warren Harding would massacre them)
9/08 South Allegheny* (AA)
9/15 @ East Allegheny* (AA)
9/22 @ Carlynton* (AA)
9/29 Steel Valley* (AA)
10/06 Serra Catholic* (AA) (Ashtabula St. John needs to call them ASAP)
10/13 @ Brentwood* (AA)
10/20 Mohawk Area (AA) (Easy win for Ashtabula Lakeside, much too small)
10/27 @ Avonworth* (AA)

I am finally guesstimating Olentangy Liberty's week 1 opponent.

The opponent now appears to be Football North St. Joseph, a new extention of the familiar Football North team from Mississauga (Toronto Suburb.) Football North opened a second football academy up near Ottawa.

Chardon is playing same team in Week 2.

Steubenville is playing same team in Week 3.

Not that I'm aware, too bad Steubenville picked up a game, would of been great to see them visit Toledo.
I doubt Stubenville would want to travel to Toledo anyways. Toledo Central Catholic likely would have had to travel to Stubenville so they could have a home game. Which is probably why they ended up playing a Canadien team so they could have it as a home game.

Anybody open week 3? How do you find openings for nearby states?
There are some teams in Western Pennsylvania open week 3. Toledo Central Catholic would likely have to travel there to play them though, unless they would be willing to pay to offset expenses. Their best bet would probably be just to play a Canadien team.

Getting close to a final list. Hopefully no school cancels their season this late in Summer.

Cincinnati Country Day just posted an open date for Week 2 on the OHSAA website. Does Dohn not have a team this year?

Not sure. North College Hill has them Week 4. We will see if they can get their team together before then. Perhaps they are waiting for school to start to recruit more kids from the hallways.

Stubenville does not have the ROCKS to play Toledo anywhere! That's OK, BHHS will take care of Toledo on Friday.

Very very last minute opening in New York might allow some team a game. NYSPHSAA Class D school Frewsburg (smallest classification), had only 18 students show up and some were freshman and first-year players. NY requires 16 players suit up for a game to be played and Frewsburg determined they were unable to make it through the entire season without a cancellation.

So, unlike in Ohio, Frewsburg and Randolph were granted an emergency co-op for the 2017 season and play under Randolph's schedule. This opens up all of Frewsburg's opponents. NYSPHSAA doesn't start play until OHSAA Week 2, however. And their season is only 7 games long before playoffs start.

So, here's the possibilities:

9/1 Cattaraugus-Little Valley
9/8 Franklinville/Ellicottville
9/15 Falconer/Cassadaga Valley
9/22 Clymer Central/Sherman/Panama
9/29 Salamanca
10/6 Portville
10/13 Chautauqua Lake

Yes, three of those are co-ops. These are all located in far southwest New York along the Pennsylvania borders mostly. Until just recently, Chautauqua Lake and Maple Grove had a co-op, but have built numbers up enough to go their separate ways. F/E just recently co-oped and it looks like that's going to be for the long haul.

They're all now open so if anyone wants a last minute game even if it might not count for OHSAA given the late opening, they are open.

Looking at the open-weeks, Portville on 10/6 and Ashtabula St. John would make the most sense.

AND........

John Hay just posted an opening for Week 4 on the OHSAA website TODAY!!!!!! Apparently they aren't playing Brunswick after all?

Cincinnati Country Day is playing Reigning Thunder in Week 2, with no computer points allowed. They had canceled the Dohn game previously.
