Does anyone happen to have a copy of boys AAA meet results showing the top 6 (point scorers) and not just the state qualifiers? I am trying to determine who scored (2 points) for St. Xavier. I suspect it was Paul Landon in the mile, but I sure would like to see it in black and white. Thanks.

Well, I don't you'll find anything outside of the qualifiers as newspapers regularly only published those during a lot of the years. You might be able to find a mention of Paul in the Cincinnati Enquirer or Post. Let me check my files to see if I can confirm or deny based on process of elimination.

Looking back at the 1981 Sectional @ Lockland, I see that St. X scored 22 points. Landon accounted for 18 of those points with his 2nd in the 1600m and 1st in the 3200m. That leaves 4 points left. I see nobody placing 4th in any of the running events, so by process of elimination, Landon was your 2 points at the Dayton District in 1981. Whether it was the mile or 2 mile, I don't know.

Thanks, Javman. There were years the scoring results were typed up and distributed - I was hoping this was one of those years. I scoured CE, Post & DDN. I am trying to verify if he inches his way up on the all-time top 25 list for the mile/1600m. Back to the drawing board.

You might want to check with Don Connolly. He may have done the write-up for those meets. I've got several copies of his results from meets I was at back then. I don't have his contact info, but Andy Wolf probably does.

Don Connolly published a weekly newsletter called "Our Times". I found some old issues from 1981,

In the first issue of April 12, 1981 Paul Landon is listed first with a 4:27.0 1600m time

In the second issue dated April 18, 1981, Doug Hopster was first with a 4:25.8, John Wiehe second with a 4:26.6 and Landon third with his 4:27.0,

The third issue dated April 25, 1981 had the same top three with the same times

The fourth issue dated May 2, 1981 still had the same top three with the same times

The fifth issue dated May 9, 1981 had Lawson of Middletown with a 4:23.3 and Landon with a 4:24.9 which was a converted time from the mile, Connolly used a conversion of 1.6 which was taken from the OHSAA rule book from 1981

Back in 1981, they scored six places 10-8-6-4-2-1, so two points would have been a fifth place. I know for a fact that he wasn't in the top four because the state meet program shows the sixteen qualifiers, four from the Southwest: Todd Saul, George Nicholas,, Marcus Dudley, and Wayne Shell.

Marcus Dudley was a funny guy. Former teammate in college. Saul & Nicholas used to go at it regularly in the Dayton meets. Saul (Northmont) & Nicholas (Meadowdale). Nicholas, unfortunately, was often injured or sick (mono).

The "Our Times" newsletters would be like gold to a historian like me. Would love to get copies of whatever you've got on those, Lancermania!

This is one of many scenarios that drives a statistician/historian crazy. Landon finished second to Dudley at sectional 4:19.3 (maybe .8) to 4:20.4. Since 4th place at regional was 4:16.4 and, assuming Landon did place 5th in the mile, his time could be faster (perhaps considerably) than his sectional performance. Lancer - was Our Times published through the state meet? BTW - thanks for the input from both of you.

No problem, whatsoever.

You might want to check any contact info you can scare up on Landon or his teammates. Might be an answer there

I ran track with his youngest brother Jimmy in the spring of 1980 at Mt. Healthy North Junior High School - ah, the good ol' days...

I found an "Our Times" from May 16, 1981 which shows Marcus Dudley with 4:19.8 at the top of the 1600m list and Paul Landon with a converted mile time (-1.6) of 4:20.2. Was that his converted GCL time?

He ran a 4:21.8 at the GCL meet. Sycamore Stadium was a 440 yard track, so that would make sense. Lancer - if you can just hook us up with that May 23, 1981 copy we'll be in business!!

Unfortunately, I don't have every issue and that is one missing.

4:16.4 was indeed 4th at the district (regional) meet), but remember Welcome stadium was not yet a metric track which is why the state meet program shows his time as 4:14.8 (4:14.8 + 1.6).

The 1981 State meet program shows dates of June 5, 6 for the state meet, shouldn't the district (now called regional) been May 30, not May 23.
OHSAA.org confirms the date. https://www.ohsaa.org/Portals/0/Sports/Track-Field/pastresults/boys/TF_1981.pdf
The Dayton AAA finals were on Friday back then, which would've been May 29, not the 30th. I have copies of the AAA district results from Welcome Stadium for that year showing that date. Whenever I'm in doubt, I use timeanddate.com to confirm dates/days for me.
