That was the exact same play Triv ran to beat St. Ignatius in 3 overtimes to win 57-56 in 2012. Except Trubisky rolled to his left and found Fritts wide open in the left corner. Knew he would try the same with Kipp and Floreia except he rolled right.Congratulations Mentor and Triv.
Well designed play for the 2 points and the win.
Now go get that state championship
Question is, did Mentor really cross the goal line on the TD? Discuss. ?
St. Edward did not do themselves any favors by going for the first down on fourth down at the 50-yard line in the first half. St. Edward was in control and that was a costly mistake when they were in control and could have pinned Mentor deep. The risk was simply too big because even if they convert, there is no guarantee that they score.
I was expecting it too, and 2012 still hurts. Damn you Trubisky! That was the exact same play Triv ran to beat St. Ignatius in 3 overtimes to win 57-56 in 2012. I just posted my comments on the same thing, and totally agree. The ball never crossed. It was clearly short! I also mentioned the 4th down stop which went back and forth and was reversed even after the measurement. Was totally confused, as they did a measurement showed it was short, Triv gets upset pointed something out which made the refs reverse the call. There also was many holding plays which were not being called on St. Eds until towards the end of the game. Not a very well ref'ed game considering what was at stake for this game.It really looked like the officials blew that 4th down call. I don't see how the Mentor QB got in. It really looked like the official assumed the guy was going in and called it too early. I watched it 5x and I don't see when the ball ever would have broken.
#2 for Eds won't get the credit for the stop, but that was an amazing defensive play. Too bad.
Totally agree, St. Eds CLEARLY was the better team tonight without a doubt. Mentor was outplayed pretty much for 3/4 of this game. It's sad that referees did not convene on some of the plays which had some issues to make the correct ruling, including a lot of holding which I saw by St. Eds that was not being called, but I'll take it as a Mentor fan that it went are way and we move on with another win. From the stands (and through the video board replay), I'm well aware of some of the calls that were not liked by the St Edward faithful. Maybe there were even a couple of calls that are downright wrong when viewed by unbiased people. Either way, I'm not going to expend too much energy on that. Instead, I'm just super excited for this amazing victory. Mentor took advantage of their opportunities when it mattered most. St Eds was the better team tonight, but the better team doesn't always win. I can't believe Mentor came back from the dead to snatch away a victory. Great finish and this will go down as one of, if not THE best, wins in Triv's career. Maybe I'm recency biased. But I would rank this right up there with the McKinley state semifinal win (2006) and Ignatius regional final (2012).
I disagree. I saw it a couple of times on the news, and he looked like he broke the plain from the angles I saw. It looked like half his body got in.It really looked like the officials blew that 4th down call. I don't see how the Mentor QB got in. I thought he broke it as well. Even if he didn't eds fans have no right to complain after Mentor was hosed in 03 after obviously getting in. Most if not all have been gracious with the defeatI disagree. I saw it a couple of times on the news, and he looked like he broke the plain from the angles I saw. It looked like half his body got in.
I found a good view on youtube and paused it every part of the play, and when he broke the plain, I had it stopped and he was well in the end zone by half of his body. I had him paused right over the goal line with the ball. It was the video from WKYC that clearly showed the he got it. Plus, the ref that called the TD was on the line. No controversy here. The play happened so quickly that of you don't pause it the whole way you will miss it.

What did happen on that 4th down stop by Mentor? I thought Eds had it, but the spot was not great for the good guys so Mentor got the stop. No biggie, but then they change it and then change it back???
