Week 2: Hilliard Darby @ Hilliard Davidson

My take is that he was right with his first set of comments right after the game, and he's doing the 'coach speak' thing to ensure that the kids work hard to fix their mistakes.

There is no doubt there is an element of that going on and I almost noted that in my post. That said, he doesn't need to communicate with the kids through ThisWeek News. I'm sure they got the message loud and clear Saturday morning. texandtwist has it right - there was a lot not to like - my son, who played D at HD, sat with us for five minutes in the third quarter and had a litany of things the defense was doing wrong - GC just wasn't good enough to take advantage. Darby will be.

With the youth this team has they better expect to be coached hard and they should go into every game just trying to get better nevermind whatever opponent they are facing.

Hope to see the Cats again soon this year to see what our current squad looks like. Good luck against Darby my buddies across town think this is the year for the Panthers.
Unfortunately, I do believe there will be a week this season where "the message" goes in one ear & out the other, and they will make a crucial mistake to lose a game that they shouldn't have. Will it be this week, Coffman week, or UA week? I have no idea.

That's when we'll find out what this team is really made of. The only good thing about that is getting it out of the way during the regular season, and hopefully not have it happen in the playoffs.

What's the best thing about sophomores and juniors? They become juniors and seniors. :)

Don't know how many Soph's they are playing but they will be a good team next year , a "REALLY " good team ?? May be , may be not , who knows , but suffice to say they will be tested tommorow night , will they pass , will they be 3-0 { yes we know Beaver country day wil be beaten up } when they invade Coffman Stadium ?

I predict that Darby beats them tommorow night BUT I hope they are 3-0 when they wend their way down to Evil Green Empiore's home to do battle . If that happens the anticipation will be HUGE if of course Coffman can beat Scioto and Perry of Massilon , it wlil get here soon enough .

Who said anything about a coach communicating to the team through ThisWeek News? That is an invention of your creation.

I don't see any reason to believe what coach says to the media is substantively (not stylistically) any different than what he says to the team in practice.

You appeared to. In response to my quoting his publiished remarks, you said:
he's doing the 'coach speak' thing to ensure that the kids work hard to fix their mistakes.

How can the comments, "coach speak" or otherwise, have the effect of "making sure the kids work hard to fix their mistakes" unless they are being addressed to the kids (in this case through the newspaper)?

But that wasn't the substance of the post, so who cares.

Can't wait to see how Buck and FW try to shine that turd.

An almost half decent performance by the D. Offense was terrible because they were dominated up front. Not a surprise.

I was quite impressed with Darby tonight. First time I have seen them, of course, this season, but, they looked darn good. Don't like seeing my QB go both ways but, he's an important cog defensively as well as the trigger man on offense. Whoever, that #35 is, like him, good looking ballplayer. Davidson backs know him pretty well, they met him often, usually in their backfield.

Fun game to watch, solid performance on the Darby side, controlled both sides of the LOS pretty well. Davidson was only able to move the ball via pass plays, now that's pretty interesting. Of course, they did it while #7 was nursing a cramp on the sidelines. He's a pretty good looking ballplayer as well.

Forgot about the punter/kicking specialist. Yep, that kid can kick. Not only can he kick the ball into the endzone but out. Not going to be too many returns with that kid kicking off. 50 yards ain't too bad punting either. Just get the ball to him a little quicker and a little more on target.

Well, at least when Davidson wins we don't put on such a classless display of sportsmanship. Go Cats, hope to see improvement in the following weeks and proud of our community's class in not responding to such antics.

Oh, please. Get over yourselves. I've seen less than sportsmanlike displays by the Davidson students. Does the first time the two teams played a regular season basketball game at Darby ring a bell?

Truth is most Davidson and most Darby fans behave fine. Each school has a few knuckleheads, too.

Darby looks GOOD. Davidson is down but will still get way better as the season goes on and will most likely still make the playoffs. I know it's very early but if Darby can stay healthy, I think they could do some major damage in the playoffs. They got a lot of speed onD, a big d line and o line, and a great punter and kicker whitch will be very important come November. There offense is pretty explosive too. Caleb Day is a stud

But storming the field and charging at/harassing the marching band? That is what most people call acting as though you've never won a game before. One game doesn't make Darby the "top dog" in Hilliard. Props on the win, but may I remind you of the 82 unanswered Davidson points it took for Darby to score once. Off year for Davidson? Perhaps, but 1 game does not mean the tides have changed, nor that this season cannot still be successful

Yes, I did see our student section run out on the field after the game was over. Perhaps that wasn't a great idea. Quite frankly, I didn't see all of the harassment you're speaking of, but I wasn't right there in the middle of the field, either, so I'll take your word. At any rate, I could recount an example or two of when Davidson's student section has had their crass moments, but what would the point be?

And yes, Davidson has a better football program than Darby. No Panther fan is denying that. Tonight, though, Darby was able to get the job done.

Good Luck to Davidson the rest of the way!

I've never seen a student section and band rush a field like that and that includes two state finals, four state semis, seven regional finals and four straight games against Pick Central. I don't think anything came of it, but if there's ever going to be a problem at a rivalry game like that, it will be precipitated by that type of behavior. Maybe that's how one acts after losing four straight to someone, but how on Earth would we know that?

See my response to davidson_rocks... And yes (believe it or not), there has been a time or two when the actions of Davidson students could have precipitated a problem at a rivalry game, so please drop the holier-than-thou act.

Good Luck the rest of the season.

typical , when a team who neverf loses , does lose they ALWAYS HAVE A PROBELM WITH THE WAY THE OPPONENT WHO BEAT THEM CELEBRATED .

I was thinking the same thing. No reason to complain. Of course, Darby was happy that they won. I feel like it is kind of petty to complain about a team celebrating.

Unfortunately, I think Davidson has an uphill battle to make the playoffs this year. Coffman will most likely be another L. Also, there are some other conference games that aren't gimmes. However, this is no surprise to me because they have so many new young players. It might be different if they played Central Crossing, Westland, Thomas, etc. earlier in the season to give them time to gel. But this year Davidson gets stuck with Darby and Coffman in the first 4 weeks of the season.

Just a hint DSA, look back to the early nineties, you will likely find quite a few teams that Hilliard lost to 4 or more times in a row. Grove City comes to mind.

Most Darby fans (and Bradley fans, I'm sure) wish Davidson well - except when the Panthers match up vs. the Wildcats. My wife and I went up in 2006 and screamed our lungs out for the Wildcats. Wasn't able to make the trip up in 2009, but I watched it from home and hung on every change of momentum in that game.

Precisely Falcon, we're Hilliard fans first regardless of affiliation. Heck the last 3 years I've seen as many Davidson games as I have seen Bradley or Darby games. I try to see each Hilliard school play at least 3 times during the regular season then whatever in the playoffs. Mostly Davidson, of course, but, its about the kids, the Hilliard kids.

Bear in mind, some of us have lived here a long time and seen alot of stuff. My oldest two kids were Wildcats, my youngest two were Panthers, If I marry that 21 year old supermodel and we have kids, they'll be Jaguars.

Funny thing is, a lot of times it isn't the kids at the schools who end up having issues. And if they do have issues, they're over it quickly. Some of the adults on the other hand...

I'd also like to note that my daughter plays on a club team that gets players from all three of Hilliard's high schools. There are absolutely no petty rivalries between the girls based on school affiliation.

BTW, Whetstone put up 84 on Africentric tonight. Of course, Africentric is not a good team (to say the least), but I can't imagine how many yards and TD passes that Finnegan is going to end up with before the year is over.

Congrats to Darby...they got the monkey off their backs...

The Darby students killed it all night long...

Davidson fans...sucked as usuall...They were standing up scraming and stomping when WE were on the 5 trying to score (why?)...but later in the 3rd or 4th (I don't fricken remember) when we had Darby 3rd and 5 kinda deep in our territory...I swear I looked across our bleachers...and pretty much absolutely zero people were tryin to cheer our D or make it tough for the Darby O...Except me of course...I was screaming and whistling...and tryin to get people to make noise...About 2/3rds of Davidsons crowd...home or away...should just stay home...they are pathetic...

The Cats need A LOT of work...And we better hope CW nevers leaves...asside from the pass plays that got Davidson deep in Darby terr...the coaching staff had no clue...

I love the 3.5 yrds and a cloud of dust...but I believe the time has come where nobody is surprised by it anymore...WE HAVE TO THRO THE BALL MORE TO OPEN UP THE RUNNING GAME!!! I am actually getting one...kinda bored with the whole rockheadedness to not thro more...two getting angry that we don't thro thro the ball more...and three...WE NEED TO THRO THE STINKIN BALL...at leat 5...6...7 times a game to make the DBs get outta the box...

Here's a crazy idea too...how bout we line up to the wide side of the field every once in a while...and maybe...SPREAD THE FRICKEN D OUT A BIT...so we can be more effective running...What happened to the power I Down on the 5?

I saw 2 ? no calls...one was a block in the back on Darby on the 2nd TD run...Darby prob scores anyway eventually...And our attempted pass in the end zone on 4th I believe it was...it looked pretty close to pass interference...I would have to see the replay...that woulda been first and goal...and the game MAY have changed a bit...prob not enough tho...

Ohhh...and how bout we let the QB thro the ball not the TB...

White...My patience wears thin with your game plan...everyone knows it by now...and guess what...?

When we fall behind two TDs...we are pretty much screwed...

From what I saw tonight...this season will be a very...long, but short one for the Cats...

If they don't get A TON better...they have zero shot at the playoffs...and from what I saw tonight...that is prob just as well...

The bright spot....hmmm...we can only get better...doesn't get much worse than what I saw tonight...

The funny part...

THE HILLIARD DAVIDSON WILDCATS still rule Hilliard...and central Ohio for that matter...Till someone hangs one... or two state banners up in the gym...As the saying goes...

That's the way it is...

I left with 2 to go...didn't see the storming of the field...I did see 3 boys carrying the Darby flags try to run around the track to Davidson side only to be turned away before they came down in front of our student section...I think the storming was planned...and def uncalled for...and should def be addressed and frowned upon...it's a safety issue...plus it does tend to get the blood boiling on both sides to a point where we hope that the story is over...but kids tend to not let stuff like that go...that's where it becomes a problem..

Good luck Davidson in the rest of the season...You are gonna need a bunch of it...

Good luck Darby in the rest of your season...You got a shot at making some noise...

GO HD CATS!!!

OlHWildcat... Even if I may not agree with them, I always enjoy reading your entertaining posts.

Good Luck to Davidson.

Africentric is in a tough situation having to play in the city league and being a DVI. Not really very fair to them as their schedule is pretty brutal overall (for a DVI team). Columbus school board should get them into the Mid-State so that those poor kids have a chance (in football), they are pretty good in the non-numbers kind of sports.

By the way on Darby's 2nd TD, did you see the O-line guy (#50 i think, or something in the 50's) downfield 20, 25 yards on the lead. Love that stuff.

And don't get me going on penalties not called, cause anyone who has ever seen a Davidson game knows that blocks below the waist while a defensive player is engaged is a personal foul. Yet, you virtually never see it called.

ummm...he was prob the guy that had the blocking in the back...great job 50...

Like I said tho...even if they call it...Darby prob scores anyway...we couldn't stop the cut back to save our lives...

Thanks bra

Good luck to all of our schools...by the way...what happend with Bradley...anyone know?

Yes, they beat Teays Valley by 31-6. Marysville (Bradley's week 1 17-10 win) lost again tonight (30-10 to Jonathan Alder). I'm beginning to think Marysville may have not been as good as advertised.

Bradley has Westland next week and that will be ugly for the Cougars. I'm curious to see how Bradley does vs. Westerville South and Westerville Central in weeks 5/6. Those should be some interesting games.

Davidson seems to have trouble getting those blocking in the back calls. Welcome Stadium? State semi's? Ring any bells? Bad luck I guess.

I was thinking the same thing. I thought they were being talked about as a potential playoff team by some. That's not looking too good right now for them.
