Underage Drinking/Smoking? Did you ever do it?

Maybe question regarding “underage drug use”: I personally smoked my first cigarette maybe age 15 1/2/16 or so maybe. Took 3 puffs and put it out. Didn’t really pick it up or smoke much since then?

But my question: Even if you did just “sample” a cigarette or “sample” any alcohol at a young age? How old were you if ever did have a first cigarette or alcoholic drink? 6 years old? 8 years old? 10? 12? 14? Just curious as to how young people would ever even consider smoking or drinking?

We used to take sips of beer of my dads whenever he asked us to run to the fridge and get him one. My first full beer I was 12, first shot of liquor was around same. First Cigarette I was 15. Only started smoking when I drank when I turned 21, I rarely ever smoked if I wasn't drinking. Haven't had a cigarette since April 2012.

I never smoke or drank, and honestly never was curious about it. Now I will say I grew up in a home where it wasn't around. Mom / Dad, grandparents, no one in my inner circle smoked or drank. I feel this was a big influence. Everyone has different opinions on this, I think when parents, grandparents, uncles, etc. any grown ups drink, it's plants that seed in the child. Obviously alot of people drink with no issues at all, but alot struggle with it, build up an addiction. Unfortunately this sometimes affect lower class citizens who have struggle to make ends meet already, then add the cigarette and beer bill every month.

And we've done and overdone the education piece. We've told people since the 1970s smoking is bad for them. For some of the population, the more you tell them not to do something the more attractive it becomes. I've got kids who are in the 21-40 age group and I feel drinking is more prevalent than ever. Some of it is just simple evolution. I think the more discretionary money people have, they'll spend it on something. Only the elites drank wine in the 70's and 80's. Now it's regular for young people of normal means.

Through the grace of God I've never been even remotely interested in smoking or drinking.

My mom and dad were non-drinkers and non-smokers, but my grandpa would give us sips of his Hudepohl when we were very young.

I never took up smoking, but my friend would steal his parents' Salems and we would smoke a cig or two in secret. That was when I was about 9 or 10.

I first started drinking beer the Summer after 8th grade. We would sneak beer from my friend's parents' pony keg when they were gone and we would also go "garaging" when we slept in a tent outside. We did get caught by my parents once. By my Sophomore year in high school, we were drinking pretty regularly as my friend's older brother would buy us beer. Now, I only drink occasionally...usually wine. Port wine and Rieslings are two of my favorites.

As far as drugs, well, I went to high school in the early-seventies and it was almost impossible to avoid them back then. Marijuana, Quaaludes, Blue Tips, Reds, PCP, microdots, blotter and windowpane acid, etc., were all available!

We used to smoke black and milds in high school bc we thought it was cool and easier to buy than cigarettes for some reason, but it was stupid as heck. I did a lot of cringe worthy things in regards to tobacco and alcohol in my mid to late teen years.

about 3 weeks into my freshman year starting on mondays at lunch time we would scheme all week on how we were going to get our beer (or whatever others were drinking). We pass along info walking between classes, and right after school before we all went to our various activities.

Having grown up with two chain smokers for parents, I was turned off so much that I never had any interest in smoking anything - I figured I had enough second hand smoke to last a lifetime.

Drinking - yeah, the occasional beer or wine cooler (that should date me ;) ) in high school, whatever older brothers of friends could score for us. And, naturally, in college as well.

Never smoked. Drank occasionally as a teen, really only when working for some friends of my dad when I was 14, 15, 16. They were old school and worked us very hard, but they were working hard with us. At the end of the night they would bring out the beer and booze and it was drinks all around. Their motto was, “work like a man and you deserve to be treated like a man.”

Drugs? Hell no. Never have, never will.
Had a few awful cigars after Steelers games but that was about it.
Drinking? Um......here is a video of one of our postgame celebrations in little league....
