It is looking like we will have more than 3 divisions in soccer soon. Thoughts? Pros? Cons?
So I took this suggestion and, using this season's CB Adjusted Enrollments, I divided this year's 3 divisions into:The other option would be to limit each division to 96 schools. Top 32 get a bye to start the tournament. This would still create a wide gap between the top schools in enrollment vs. the bottom in D1.
The board of directors would have to vote on it, but the schools would not.I like the concept, but the OHSAA has a lot of work to do to pull this off for the 2024 season. I believe there needs to be vote by the schools and then they need to create the divisional breakdowns. I wonder if they will do the numbers over or use the numbers from last year? If they use the current numbers, it appears that NE Ohio has about only 15 teams in the top 64, I would assume NW Ohio has even less. I wonder if they combine them into one large district or just have small one in NE Ohio. I think DII becomes very difficult with the teams that would drop. Hudson, Shaker Heights, Copley, Avon, Hoover, Walsh, Twinsburg, Avon Lake, Wooster, Hoban, and Highland are not in the top 64. Revere would probably stay DII and Bay would probably be close to staying DII. If they do the numbers over this of course could change. It will be interesting!
All depends on how motivated they are to make it happen. Once they approve it they have a long time to sort out the detail of how the tourneys would work.I like the concept, but the OHSAA has a lot of work to do to pull this off for the 2024 season. I did it with sorting out D1 as 64 teams and having 5 divisions total.So I took this suggestion and, using this season's CB Adjusted Enrollments, I divided this year's 3 divisions into:
D1 = 94, enrollment range = 787 (1301-514)
D2 = 94, enrollment range = 167 (513-346)
D3 = 94, enrollment range = 98 (345-247)
D4 = 94, enrollment range = 64 (246-182)
D5 = 92, enrollment range = 44 (181-137)
D6 = 97, enrollment range = 120 (136-16)
Wonder if they’d do a split-site using both old and new crew stadium. Maybe rotate which divisions get which each year.All depends on how motivated they are to make it happen. Once they approve it they have a long time to sort out the detail of how the tourneys would work.
Would anyone really be against it? I can't really think of a reason.
One certain issue is you would likely need 2 locations for finals. Having 5-6 finals in one day would be crazy.
That would be my guess. Not sure if they'd rotate or just give the larger divisions the new stadium and the smaller division the old one.Wonder if they’d do a split-site using both old and new crew stadium. Maybe rotate which divisions get which each year.
Good point, working around MLS Playoffs probably precludes that.That would be my guess. Not sure if they'd rotate or just give the larger divisions the new stadium and the smaller division the old one.
Of course, this year, they would have been screwed as Lower.com wasn't available with the Crew in the MLS playoffs.
I like this idea, but then may need to adjust girls soccer to start a week early so their tournament is a week ahead of the boys (similar to how basketball is structured currently).Why not just do them over multiple days like football and other sports?
Where that D4-D5 cutoff would be would be huge. Several of the teams you mentioned are right near the line.Mason, St. Xavier, and St. Ignatius were the top three in Boys enrollment + CB number for the 2023 breakdown. Centerville was 7th, Medina was 21st, Moeller and Dublin Jerome was 32nd and 33rd respectively. The cut off this past year would have been Pickerington North in 64th, Wadsworth would have been at the top of DII in hypothetical five divisions.
Schools at the top of a new DII this past year would have included Avon, Shaker Hts, Solon, and Hudson from NE Ohio. And it basically would have went down to the first school of the current DII to get to 125.
On top of a new DIII in terms of NE Ohio would include Revere, Painesville Harvey, and Warren Howland (all DII regional teams this past year), though these are all schools at the top of DII enrollment currently. Bay would be close to halfway down in terms of enrollment ranking. Springfield Shawnee would have been the 125th school in a new DIII ... schools toward the bottom would include past state champ Wyoming, but nothing that off the top of my head has made regional noise outside of them.
On top of a new DIV would be school such as Poland, Summit Country Day, CHCA. Other schools in the bottom of the current DII enrollment that swing DII to DIII currently year-to-year would be in the middle of this division. The 124th school in this hypotehtical division would have been Van Buren. So schools at the bottom of this division would include Beachwood and Wickliffe that have recently made regional play in NE Ohio.
At the top of a new DV would possibly be Columbiana Crestview (which means they could be at the bottom of a new DIV), Ottawa Hills, United, Mansfield Christian, and Andrews Osborne (though their being this high up the food chain is because of their CB #).
