Rest in peace Pete

2,000 more at bats than any player in MLB history. Of course had more hits than anyone. He also has the record for most Prom appearances over the age of 30.
Yes but he he got more at bats partly because of being able to get on base even as he aged. He actually had more hits than anyone in baseball in 1981 at age 40 (140, strike-shortened season). His on-base percentage after turning 40 was a remarkable .355 and .365 after turning 38! To put that into perspective only 16 players had an OBP that high this season. This year's NL batting champ Luis Arraez had on OBP of .346. Pete was amazing.

If the HOF players got to vote, do you think they would put him in? I remember that most hated his guts for selling autographs down the street on induction weekends.

Indeed. Very flawed person, but still one of the all time great players in Baseball history.
Exactly! One has nothing to do with the other! I went to school with kids that were honor students but sold drugs outside of school for years and they're not in jail as a type.

Like a hero in a Greek Tragedy, Rose was the consummate warrior on the playing field. Yet his accomplishments are dimmed by self inflicted flaws of character, much like the ghost of Ty Cobb that Rose chased.

He ended an All-Star catcher's career with a look-at-me play in a meaningless exhibition game.

You keep flogging that Ray Fosse nonsense. The only reason Fosse was even on that All Star team was because every team had to be represented. Fosse spent half his time in big leagues on the IL. He was always stepping in a hole running to first, or suffering a crushed vertebrae breaking up a locker room fight. If Pete had not knocked him out when he was tryin to block the plate without the ball, nobody and I mean nobody would remember who the hell Ray Fosse was. Getting blasted by Pete Rose was Ray Fosse's only claim to fame.

What many don’t realize is that Ray Fosse didn’t even go on the (DL) IL after the All-Star game. 🤦‍♂️

It’s interesting that Amos Otis gets no criticism for charging the ball like a maniac in an effort to throw Pete out at home plate… it was the 12th inning of an exhibition game in CINCINNATI… since we’re all concerned about sportsmanship, why didn’t Otis and Fosse just go through the motions and let the hometown hero score to win the game?

^Rhetorical question

Obvious answer:
Because that’s not how the game is played.

Thanks for that!

This is what I think of when remembering Pete. The garbage thrown at him in the big apple caused him to change positions
As a Pirate fan, I HATED when Pete or Joe Morgan was up to bat. Because they always seemed to come up with that key hit. But I always respected how Pete played rhe game. The man sprinted to 1st base on a walk and around the bases on a home run

Willie Stargell and Dave Parker then that Tukulve guy. Threw sidearm

But the Reds knew how good Pittsburgh was.
The Reds also knew how good the Dodgers were throughout the Big Red Machine era. The Reds had the great eight, but the Dodgers had Lopes, Russell, Garvey, Cey, Baker, Smith, and Buckner all through the 70's. The Dodgers would win 92 games and finish 10 games back of the Reds in the NL West. Then free agency came along and the era of rent a player and roster turnover changed everything.
