Again, I don't have the time to go through and say if this is good or bad in terms of performance based on participation and opposition, nor do I have time right now to dissect prospects moving forward.

Any matches with National ranking significance involving Ohio guys? Top 20 even?? I see a lot of honorable mentions which carry a lot of vulnerability to change snd parity, but not a lot of top 10 guys in the entire tournament.

Peterson was 2nd at 170, which was his ceiling. The Waters kid that won the title is nationally ranked, and pinned Holden Garcia in the first period for his state title.
Karson Brown was 3rd at 113, split matches with Carlson from Utah. It's a result that could see him end the season outside the national rankings, if he wasn't already. That split offsets the James (NJ) win from Powerade, and the McKinney split had put him right on the fringe. At least that's how this former national ranker would view it.
Alex Taylor was 4th at 215, no contested his medal match (was facing the younger Pitzer, older brother redshirted this year at Pitt but was competing attached in spots; the one was R12 in PA 2A at 215); loss on the front side was to Steve Mocco's son.
E.J. German was 5th at 285
Dillon King was 7th at 195, though he didn't compete state series at Garaway

Adam Mattin was 2nd at 106, pinned by Seidel, who is top five (or higher) nationally at the weight class. Again, that's a ceiling outcome.
Carson Thomas 4-3 over Tyrel Miller in the final at 170 is a very validating result for Carson Thomas. Assuming both are in the same weight preseason, you have a clear No. 1 now based on Thomas winning at state and here at NHSCA
J.R. Miller was pinned by Harvey Ludington at 182 in a battle of nationally ranked 170's. This was probably one of the few ranked-on-ranked finals. Ludington was ranked below J.R. going into the event, so this is a clear statement for Ludington, who is obviously real talented - winning state as a frosh in 2022 and losing narrowly to Simon Ruiz in a champ/champ state final earlier this month.
Stuerenberg was runner-up, got majored in the final.
Sanderfer was 3rd at 132, lost to the eventual champ (Gorman, who is in the national ranking conversation)
Riley McPherson finished 5th at 195
Huhn and Reedy (Sheridan) finished 8th at 132 and 138 respectively
Caesar finished 7th at 285 after being a state alternate in the post-season.

JUNIORS
Limbert finished 2nd at 113, losing 6-4 to a kid from South Carolina
Yackee was 2nd at 195, losing 4-2 to a to a multi-time California state placer, so that is a rather good showing for him
Kade Brown was 3rd at 132, losing to Sherlock, who is a wrestler in the same national tier as him. That's the type of result that will show in the weight class rankings come the 2023-24 preseason.
Allen was 6th at 120

SENIORS
McClelland took 2nd at 138, losing 6-4 to Powe from Alabama
Thomas was 7th at 195

In terms of the overall event, there was very little ranked-on-ranked. Lots of the truly top of the line wrestlers have transitioned their minds into training for the U17 and U20 national tournaments to be held at the end of April in Las Vegas. I think the U17 event still serves as an outright world team trials, while the U20 event sets up the world team trials to be held in early June.

Some of the performances and non-performances from Ohio wrestlers that are outside looking in types for the national rankings right now (and/or could be come next fall) will show themselves when the rankings post next fall. When I was doing the rankings nationally, which I don't anymore (thank heavens as there are more high leverage events than ever), these types of results would set the tone for the next season -- whether it's providing a direct head-on, or if it's providing a clunky loss that positions the wrestler outside a ranked tier being the most obvious things.

Harvey Ludington's performance against Miller was down right scary. Looked like Bo Nickel 2.0.
Agreed. NJ kid not surprised, and it wasn’t even close, Miller was manhandled i dont see that changing anytime soon. Miller is a good athlete but sloppy technique wise… Ludington exposed that.

Alex Taylor injured out for the record(knee).. Don’t think he would’ve had much trouble with Pitzer..

Genuine curiosity. What is the level of "prestige" (for lack of a better word) for NHSCAs now. I honestly didn't even know they were this past weekend till I saw posts about results. Is this now the bottom of National level tournaments for wrestling?

It looked like Jr and Senior was not as tough as the soph and freshmen(lb for lb) .. It used to be tougher but I did see a lot of state champs fargo champs and all americans get beat, The #5 kid in the country got beat.. So i’d say there were a lot of good matches..

I would agree—not as tough as it used to be. I think that is in part due to availability of more high level freestyle duals like Journeymen FS, the one in NJ (I forget the name) or Ultimate Club Duals in PA. You see a handful of nationally ranked dudes here, but mostly honorable mention types and others that either do not do freestyle or trying to make a name for themselves.
You won’t see Ohio’s best like Shulaw, McDanel, the Blazes, Herman, Cartella, Wilson, Birden, Campbell, Hermes, etc. I may have missed so e of our best—but in general, top 10 type guys aren’t gonna be here. I would say it has good depth though. Probably better than PostSeason Nationals….but nothing like S32, Jmen, Ironman, PowerAde, etc.

Very fair assessment.

Definitely not a bunch of "fish". Anything to have kids keep wrestling and hopefully have some fun would always be worth it. And my freshman even won a match, although he's more of a fish than not lol.

Senior makes sense as I believe Josh said with seniors having one foot in the door for college already. I imagine the "recent" surge of world team trials tournament for Cadet and Juniors, and that being the new top, one of the other national tournaments was bound to falter. I just wonder if any other sport has as many national tournaments. I agree with giving everyone the opportunity to compete, but the ability to say you're a national champ in wrestling to me is in higher volumes than a lot of sports.

World team trial has for sure been a focus for a lot of the very best kids, My beef with WTT has always been specific to the fact 15u only goes to 85kg… One of my kids has been over that since he was 12, Would love to let him compete for a spot..
