Elder Coach Doug Ramsey

PURPLE REIGN

Great interview with Elder coach Doug Ramsey.

He really opens up about the past 25 years, Dad's Club, why he is at Elder, The Pit, playing LaSalle is going to be a challenge, coaching his children, and dealing with parents. You get a glimpse of the type of man and type of coach he is. Elder is so lucky to have him.

This was an awesome interview.

Elder is truly lucky to have him as a coach. I know my respect for him has increased dramatically over the years. The vast majority of people would not be able to handle the pressure at Elder. While Elder by-far has the most loyal fans in the tristate area, they are also extremely vocal and extremely critical. Ramsey has done nothing but win in his tenure; and he is criticized constantly by the fan base. Even in this year, being 7-2, you'd think you were 2-7 with the comments on Yappi about playcalling, the play of certain positions groups, etc. When he decides to retire, Elder very well could fall on hard times if the perfect candidate is not chosen to replace him.... most coaches would not have put up with what he has for so long.

All I'm saying is be thankful for what you have. Most schools can't keep a coach for 5 seasons. And there's not a school around with a fanbase as vocal and critical as Elder's...... even when things are going great.

Elder is absolutely thankful for what they have. Ramsey certainly encounters a passionate fan base but I’d guess every coach would want to be part of an experience like Elder if the alternative is apathy.

Their is a reason he remains and so many other Elder coaches stay. No school in the city, state, and maybe country has the tenure among its coaches Elder has experienced. Since the late 90’s, Elder has had one baseball coach, one basketball coach, two wrestling coaches, and one football coach. Remarkable! What’s even better is 4 of the 5 dedicated their lives to a school they did not even attend!!!!

So yes, Elder fans care and are at times over the top…look at the chatter on this school forum! However, the passion and pride they have for their institution is surpassed by no other high school in the country.

What a great interview from an even better person. Elder HS is extremely lucky to have this man coaching your son's. He is not only about the W's, he is about every kid getting the Elder experience. He is a friend and used to be, a fellow Elder coach. I love that he got this opportunity to speak about HIS Elder experience. Nice job Rambo!!!

The same could be said about you Coach! I hope you and the other Elder coaching legends truly realize the appreciation we all have for the sacrifices you made and the indelible impact you had on so many lives! ALTIORA

That’s you. In case you didn’t notice, Elder isn’t a run heavy team, which you’ve been saying is the only way to win. I’ve kept saying BALANCE was the key, and the Elder Offense this yr has been fairly BALANCED.

The perfect replacement is Peyton, but he still has a lot to learn. Hopefully, Coach Ramsey still has more than a few seasons left in the tank

Here you go again. Elder's offense has been FAR from balanced. They have run 449 total plays on offense, and 299 of them have been run plays compared to the 150 pass attempts. They have run the ball 2x as much as they have passed. Elder has also scored 20 TDs on the ground vs the 10 through the air. Again, you don't know what you are talking about. This is nowhere close to balanced, and yet they win.

Try again when you have actual FACTS to back up your ridiculous argument.

And what makes Peyton the perfect replacement? I know he is coaching locally, but one would think if he were interested in Elder, that he'd already be teaching and coaching there. It's going to be really hard to give up that Sycamore teaching salary and state retirement to go to Elder where you will always be compared to your dad.

One thing he is right about is the fans. I'm not even talking about Yappi. Yappi talk is pretty tame to what you hear in the stands. My feeling is it can be the alcohol talking for some fans in the stands, or there's some fans with some real screws loose. If you have never sat on the home stand between the 20 and 20 you wouldn't understand. There's some Elder fans that are relentless in the stands yelling to or about Ramsey. I can only guess he doesn't hear them. The 2 super fan guys were really bad years ago. I have heard of parents of players saying they won't sit in their season ticket seats so they don't have to listen to some of the fans.

Thank you!

Again, the passion is great, but that passion can wear on people. These coaches aren't getting rich here like they are in Texas. It's just not worth it to most coaches.

He was teaching at Elder and he’s been on the staff.

Peyton teaches at Sycamore, but coaches at Elder. Doug gave him credit for calling for the long pass play against Roncalli that setup the game winning TD.

I know he's teaching at Sycamore currently, and thought he was an assistant there too.
you can’t win Titles at Sycamore bc of the pussified culture. The fact Datillo has won as much as he has, is a borderline miracle.

Also, one of the things that makes Ramsey a great Coach, he was one of the first adapters of the spread offense in SWO.

You must not know PBoy
I want him to coach another 10 years, but that looks unlikely. I was caught off guard this past Summer when he was said he was near the end of his career. I think that’s something most of us figured was true, but seeing him say it publicly confirmed those suspicions.

Elder has more resources than most schools, but it’s still a very difficult job, and it’s only gotten more difficult in the 25 years since he started. Like Cincifb said, a less skilled coach couldn’t have won under these circumstances.

Coach Ramsey is as good as it gets. Having played for him, and had the opportunity to coach under him: there is no one better to lead the Elder program. It will definitely be interesting to see the remainder of his career and what comes after.
Are your coaching days over MM QB?
