Dabo and Clemson

What’s the reason for the step back from elite to just good for Clemson? They had a great thing going for a few years where they were pretty much the only competition for the dominant Bama teams under St Nick. Why the dip?

Is Dabo just losing it?

Is it the loss of Venables?

Is it the loss of mega-recruiter Todd Bates?

Is it not having the deep pocket boosters to offer the NIL money needed to land the big fish?

Was it just having back to back generational talent QBs in Watson and Lawrence?

Is it all of the above, or something else?

My take in order:

  1. Inability to adjust to the new rules in place post Covid, in particular with regards to the transfer portal and to a lesser extent NIL.
  2. His style is not for everyone, most high level recruits are now looking for NFL training programs and could care less about all the rah rah and Jesus stuff he is all in with.
  3. Generational talent QBs in Watson and Lawrence hid a lot of deficiencies.
  4. Big swings and missing in recruiting on entire position groups like OL. He compounds this by staying with "his guys" too long and not picking up available better players in the portal.
  5. ACC was very down in the mid to late '10s. Title contending programs in the '90s and '00s like FSU, Miami, Va Tech, etc... all fell off the map during his primary run.

Loss of Venables and something happened in that OSU Clemson 2nd playoff game. They haven't been the same since. Could also be the QB issue. And the 10 year starter Etienne

Just in watching NFL games the last couple weeks there are Clemson dudes everywhere. I can’t believe the program took such a dip so fast.

I'm going to step back a little further. Take a look back at Clemson football prior to Dabo Swinney. Not an awful program, but normally a 5-8 win team per season, never in the national picture. Dabo comes on board 2009 season, takes a few years, but from 2011 thru 2022 double digit win seasons, 2 national championships, 4 championship game appearances. Astounding. Especially when you consider Clemson doesn't have the alumni / booster base that Ohio State/ Alabama/ Georgia the other big boys.
So I'd flip this sentiment to say if you're a Tiger fan, you likely saw the golden age of your program history.

If they get what they want and get into the sec 8 wins will be a stretch
And that's why I said for Clemson fans, just sit back and enjoy the decade you just had. Outside of Alabama, probably the best college program in the country during that time.

While Clemson gets the W in the Gator Bowl it was not a good looking game and exposes the holes in certain position groups in Dabo's program, notably OL and DBs. To me unless he changes the way he does business 9-4 in a diminished ACC might be his ceiling in the near future.

Also kind of ironic that the ACCN has been hyping up their FSU Orange Bowl coverage during the game.

And quite honestly, Clemson fans seem reasonably satisfied with the state of the program under Dabo. Clemson's success did not drive their fans towards the level of entitlement seen among some Ohio State fans. Clemson peeps remember their lean times.

All of the above. Dabo started to believe his own BS a bit in that he believed he could insert any player/coach into the mix and win.

He had a stretch of some INCREDIBLE players. Two once in a lifetime college QBs back-to-back and a stretch of about 5-6 years with incredible Dline talent, which is a common theme among national title winners. Then of course he lost Venables and Elliott in a two year stretch.

This season the Tigers still have top 5 talent. However, after being top 5 in recruiting for about a 8-10 year stretch the Tigers and Dabo will soon take a step backwards as they were 14th nationally and 3rd in the ACC this year.

Dabo's situation shows just how tough it is to stay on top and how phenomenal Nick Saban is.

This is just MEEE mind you BUT! Me thinks that ole Dabo, Dabo Do is stuck in pre portal times. At this writing, he has taken NO transfers into his program.

SOOO, you think Satan is PHENOMENAL? LOAT! LUCKIEST of ALL TIME!! TWO plays were the difference in Satan having only 5 natty's and UGA having the same number. And two MORE plays against UGA, and they would have SEVEN!

Clemson relies upon GEORGIA TALENT, to get R done. THREE of their QB1's during their UP years, were from GEORGIA!
