I'm wondering if Mason had some players out due to Covid. Cases are rising all over Cincinnati. Mason never takes it on the chin like that.
Moeller recently beat Mason 1-0.
From what I could tell, Mason had their team minus their one MF out with injury. However, he hasn’t played this year yet. Not sure if he will make it back in time for the playoffs.
I think you have to look at a few things:
1 - this was Mason’s 3rd game in 5 days. They had Moeller on Tuesday (big emotional game), followed by a league game on Thursday, then the Elks on Saturday. They likely were gassed and had some tired legs.
2 - when Moeller played Mason, it was their 3rd game in 5 days as well (4th in a week). They played New Albany Friday and Rockford (Saturday, 15 hours later and both amidst excessive heat warnings), followed by Mason on Tuesday. They also had tired legs.
3 - the early PK 20 seconds in likely changed Mason’s approach. Versus Moeller, Mason played more of a low / mid block, trying not to concede. They weren’t a threat to score. The Elks early PK opened up the game and forced Mason to chase a goal. Two mistakes later and it’s 3-0 at halftime, which had Mason looking to their next game on the schedule.
Mason is certainly down this year. The Elks look to have solved some of their offensive woes from a slow start. Moeller D and MF might be one of the best in the State. St. x always has talent and can make a run too. I think it’s a 3 horse race between the Elks, Moeller and St. X. Huge game Tuesday night this week with Moeller traveling to St. X.
