Best Ohio XC Team EVER?

My notes show Woodridge was an automatic bid in 2006 and LaSalle received an at-large. Elmhurst York was the other automatic bid from the midwest. The regional meet was not contested until 2007. Medina earned an at-large that year.
That is correct. Woodridge #1 got sick (Food Poisoning) at Oregon. Put him at his normal #1 and they would have finished very high that year. The year before is the year that started their streak of consecutive state meet qualifying. That year started the girls.

I’m fairly certain Stifel was the #2 in 2013. But yes, crazy.
Except for Nike Regional and the blanket finish at GCL, Hall was #1, Stifel was #2 and Vitucci was #3 for St. Xavier in 2013. Hall did not compete in the Bombers first meet (Moeller Primetime) where Stifel and Vitucci finished 1-2 overall.

'04 was Woodridge boys' 1st year of the current streak. '05 team looked like the favorite all year but didn't get it done at state.

The Salem team? I'm bad about confusing years anymore. I keep forgetting track and CC are different years. I went by when my daughter graduated in my head.

Yeah, that was Salem boys repeating as team champions with St. V finishing 2nd. After dominating the regional meet, Woodridge finished 3rd at state. The region was as stacked as ever that year. Walsh Jesuit was #2 in the state poll behind Woodridge coming into the regional meet and failed to advance, with Aurora snaking the 4th team spot out of Boardman.

86 and 87 were pretty darn good.
I recall fall of 1985 Caldwell showed up at Brookville invitational, where no fewer than three other small school state qualifiers were competing, and I'm pretty certain Caldwell finished with a perfect 15 points (only time I ever saw it done) and their 7 th man was in top 10 with a 16:30 something? That was an amazing program for a sport that unlikely had kids transferring in for a chance at a title.

I can't speak for 1985, but the 1986 Caldwell team won Brookville with 25 points (1, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10 & 15) with a 5-man average of ~15:37. Their 7th man was 16:31 that day.

I just noticed this thread and feel compelled to add to it. It is always difficult to compare times across the different years as distances, courses, and technologies have changed. NXN has definitely helped to compare teams across states, but it's still difficult to compare across eras. I was one of the runners on the 1980 Kent Roosevelt team and want to provide more info trying to defend Roosevelt as possibly the best team that Ohio has ever produced. I see the response from psycho_dad about Coach Lucas and his obsession. He was very thorough and loved his cross-country, but that should not impact the results that he produced. He was a good coach and got a lot out of his teams. XC Legacy has Kent as co-National champions in 1980 with Bloomington North (see article at https://web.archive.org/web/20110626102945/http://www.xcnation.com/kentrooseveltnationalchamps.html). In fact, Kent Roosevelt has been considered as one of the greatest teams ever (see article at https://www.milesplit.com/articles/54304/clash-of-the-titans-xc-legacy-wildcards). Kent Roosevelt still 45 years later has the record for low score for AAA/Division 1 with 44 points and the largest margin of victory of 119. The State Meet may have been our worst race of the year with Steve Weiner, who had been running number 1 man most of the year, being diagnosed with mono after the race and finishing 100th. Malone was a great race featuring many of the top schools in the State and Kent Roosevelt scored a perfect score, plus Ron Beck in 8th. All five of the runners were ahead of the eventual second place runner at State. Not to diss the Woodridge or Caldwell teams that were mentioned, but they were in lower classifications so I find it hard to compare their results to the bigger schools with more competitive races.

I think there is some "recency bias" in this thread. I ran against the 78 Colerain team for 4 years and they get my vote as the best team ever. Placing 4 runners in top 11 (and 5 in top 19) in the large school State Championship meet is an amazing accomplishment.

The Colerain team was a great team in '78. They were ranked #3 in the country by XC Legacy. But, your argument supports Kent Roosevelt over that great team. Kent went 4,5,6,11,18 in '80 for 44 points compared to 48 for Colerain. Kent was ranked as national co-champion by XC Legacy and has consideration as one of the greatest teams in the country. Kent had (and still has the largest margin of victory for the large schools) with 119. The average for Roosevelt's runners was 12:17 compared to 12:28 for Colerain, although I realize they were different courses and different conditions so it is tough to compare. And, this with arguably their best runner finishing 100th who had been 5th at State the year before.

You make a good argument for Kent Roosevelt. Having left Ohio in 1979, I have to admit I was unfamiliar with that team and not aware they were also in the large school division (AAA back then), In 78 we ran on the Ohio State golf course (Scarlet I believe). Where was State held after that?

'79 was at the Columbus Academy. '80 and '81 were at OSU North Facility Course. I did run in the '78 race at the golf course as a freshman when Roosevelt finished 6th to that Colerain team.

I just came across this thread, but no one mentioned the Caldwell boys teams from the 80s I believe. I think they perfect scored the state meet maybe?
