The Steelers at 6-2 heading into the bye, about as good as could be expected.
Remaining games: @ Was, Bal, @ Cle, @ Cin, Cle, @ Phi, @ Bal, KC, Cin
That’s Daniels, Jackson, Crabcakes, Burrow, Crabcakes, Hurts, Jackson, Mahomes & Burrow. Steelers thus far has faced Cousins, Nix, Herbert, Flacco, Prescott, O’Connell, Rodgers, Jones.
Big difference quality of QB play the Steelers will face moving forward.
The positives:
1) Wilson has looked very good albeit vs 2-6 NYJ and 2-6 NYG.
2) Relative good health. Only starter loss for the season is RG James Daniels who was having a career year.
3) After the bye the Steelers should get back C Zach Frazier, OLB Nick Herbig and RB Patterson. Plus CB Cam Sutton will come off the suspended list.
4) The recent emergence of TE Washington and WR Austin (great game last night) and backup C Ryan McCollum. Could the Steelers keep McCollum at C and move Frazier to RG? RG rookie Mason McCormick had a rough game last night vs the NFL best DT Dexter Lawrence. Regardless, great problem to have some depth in the interior oline.
4) The play of the rookies: C Frazier, RG McCormick, Slot corner Bishop, ILB Wilson. The future looks great for these young players.
5) The play & attitude of Justin Fields. Good kid, he’s just not a top 20 type of nfl qb. His solid play over the first 6 games helped put the Steelers in this position.
6) RB Jaylen Warren seems to be back. A week of rest and I think we will see the Warren of last year at full strength. Very, very good blocker and just an explosive, hard nose runner, he is a difference maker.
The negatives/concerns:
1) Depth at Tackle. RT Jones has played like crap, no other way to say it. LT Moore has played his way into a nice payday at the end of this season as he will be a free agent, great for him.
2) Depth at WR or no one to fill in for George Pickens. Pickens obviously has had a tough time dealing with some adversity or not getting the ball enough over the last two years by pouting, not running hard on his routes when he is not the primary target or not trying to block. Let’s hope Pickens can deal with some success because Russ will throw him 5-10 td’s the rest of the year if both stay healthy. Pickens is that good physically but he’s mentally as tough as a potato chip.
3) Can Russ keep playing like he has for 8 quarters? I think/hope so - we will find out over the next two months.
I do not see any trade for a wr happening. I’d rather see a trade for a swing tackle who could perhaps challenge Jones for playing time.
Get some rest, a good week of practice and onto Washington & rookie qb phenom Jayden Daniels.
