We are a week out from the U20 and U23 World Team Trials for both men's freestyle and Greco-Roman. Half of the U20 finalists have already been decided via the US Open, while the other finalist will have to fight through the qualifying bracket. I'll have a couple posts below with some notable names from U20 and U23, as well as a list of Ohio guys registered so far.

Men's Freestyle U20 Finalists (Sit in best 2 out of 3 finals):

57kg: Luke Lilledahl (high school, 2022 U17 gold, 2021 U17 silver)
61kg: Nic Bouzakis (Ohio State, 2022 U20 world teamer)
65kg: Tyler Kasak (Penn State, 2022 U17 silver)
70kg: Meyer Shapiro (Cornell, 2021 U17 gold)
74kg: Mitch Mesenbrink (Penn State, 2022 U20 silver)
79kg: Gabe Arnold (Iowa)
86kg: Bennett Berge (South Dakota State, 2022 U20 silver)
92kg: Jack Darrah (Stanford)
97kg: Camden McDanel (Nebraska)
125kg: Christian Carroll (Oklahoma State)

U23 Men's Freestyle Notables:

57kg: Stevo Poulin, Dean Peterson, Cooper Flynn, Blake West, Brett Ungar
61kg: Julian Chlebove, Dominick Serrano, Kyle Burwick, Cullan Schriever, Kase Mauger, Tristan Lujan
65kg: CJ Composto, Ryan Jack, Jesse Vasquez, Brock Hardy, Cole Matthews, Josh Saunders
70kg: Doug Zapf, Ed Scott, Jaden Abas, Fidel Mayora, Caleb Tyus, Caleb Rathjen, Graham Rooks
74kg: Vinny Zerban, Bubba Wilson, Peyton Hall, Joey Bianchi, Paddy Gallagher, Julian Ramirez
79kg: Nick Incontrera, Dustin Plott, Donnell Washington, Jackson Turley, Jay Nivison, Carson Kharchla
86kg: n/a (Aaron Brooks will have the opportunity to take this spot. He must accept the spot by June 26th)
92kg: Luke Surber, Kyle Haas, Luke Stout, Silas Allred, Levi Hopkins, Evan Bockman, Jacob Cardenas
97kg: n/a (Owen Trephan made the Senior National Team by finishing runner up at the US Open. He has already accepted this spot and will be representing the team regardless of the result here).
125kg: Owen Trephan, Konner Doucet, Hunter Catka, Wyatt Hendrickson, Josh Heindselman (Gable Steveson technically has the opportunity to take this spot, but he will not do so. I believe Mason Parris is in his age-24 year and is too old).

Overview- If this is what we get, it's a really weak group. Jacob Cardenas was a late add here, he finished 2nd at worlds last year and will be a big favorite at 92kg. Matthews is the only other returner and he finished 1-1 at worlds last year. Nagao and Starocci could both return, neither have not done so yet. Pat Glory mad the 2021 team and I think he is still eligible as well. Cardenas, Trephan, Matthews and Hendrickson are the best guys (and Brooks should he accept), I don't see a ton of talent here at some of the weights. Nobody has ever medaled for the US at U23 who hasn't finished at least R12 in their college careers.

2022 U23 World Team and their 2023 NCAA finish:
- Vito Arujau went 0-1 at worlds, NCAA champ
- Aaron Nagao went 1-2 at worlds, NCAA 5th
- Cole Matthews went 1-1 at worlds, NCAA R12, previous 5th
- Yahya Thomas went 2-2 at worlds, NCAA R12, previous 3rd
- David Carr went 1-1 at worlds, NCAA 3rd
- Carter Starocci won bronze at worlds, NCAA champ
- Trent Hidlay won silver at worlds, NCAA 4th
- Jacob Cardenas won silver at worlds, NCAA 8th
- Tanner Sloan won silver at worlds, NCAA 2nd
- Tony Cassioppi won brone at worlds, NCAA 4th

That's the best team the USA has ever put out, nobody won gold, and it's 3x as good as any potential team the US could have this year.

Potential best lineup:
57kg: Pat Glory/Matt Ramos
61kg: Aaron Nagao
65kg: Andrew Alirez
70kg: Sammy Sasso
74kg: Levi Haines
79kg: Carter Starocci
86kg: Aaron Brooks
92kg: Parker Keckeisen
97kg: Braxton Amos
125kg: Gable Steveson/Greg Kerkvliet

None of those guys are competing. Unfortunately, U23s does not hold the weight it should with the majority of college guys. Other countries send their best U23 world teamers, we do not.

Spratley over Jax Forrest, who beat Jore Volk. Cale Hughes over Valencia was a shocker to me personally. Couple more guys with huge days that were maybe just outside the elite before, lots of new faces challenging.

Men's Freestyle U20 Team:

57kg- Luke Lilledahl
61kg- Nic Bouzakis
65kg- Jesse Mendez
70kg- Meyer Shapiro
74kg- Mitch Mesenbrink
79kg- Matthew Singleton
86kg- Bennett Berge
92kg- Jack Darrah
97kg- Camden McDanel
125kg- Christian Carroll

- Mesenbrink and Berge are returning world silver medalists.
- Bouzakis was a U20 world teamer in 2022. Mendez was a U20 world teamer in 2021 and a U17 world teamer in 2019.
- Lilledahl was a U17 gold medalist in 2022 and silver medalist in 2021. Shapiro was U17 gold in 2021.
- Carroll was a U20 Greco world teamer in 2022. Singleton was a U20 Greco world teamer in 2021. Bouzakis was a U20 Greco world teamer in 2021.

It's a great team. It's extremely hard to judge who will do what at U20s, especially since we don't know if Russia will be allowed to compete. Gotta think Mesenbrink and Berge as returning medalists will be expected to medal again. Bouzakis and Mendez are both older with worlds experience at weights the USA can win medals at. Shapiro was a U17 gold medalist, so he knows what it takes to win. That's five really good guys right there, which is about the average number of medals the USA wins at U20s nowadays. I can all but guarantee one of those guys won't medal and one unnamed guy will, it always happens that way. Last year, Bouzakis, Facundo, and Feldman were three of the bigger names on the team and none medaled, while Berge, Volk and Mesenbrink all came home with medals.

Flowrestling Big Board placements of U20 team:

Meyer Shapiro, #1 2023
Luke Lilledahl, #2 2024
Jesse Mendez, #3 2022
Nic Bouzakis, #4 2022
Christian Carroll, #8 2023
Matt Singleton, #10 2022
Mitch Mesenbrink, #18 2022
Bennett Berge, #26 2022
Camden McDanel, #37 2023
Jack Darrah, UR 2022 (was probably just outside top 100)

U23 Finals:
57kg- Stevo Poulin v Cooper Flynn

65kg- Ryan Jack v Brock Hardy
70kg- Ed Scott v Doug Zapf
74kg- Julian Ramirez v Matt Lee

Reminder, 97kg will be Isaac Trumble at worlds. He qualified by making the national team at 97kg. Aaron Brooks will also have the choice to take the 86kg spot. Additionally, Keegan O'Toole will face Vincenzo Joseph at 74kg, with a win qualifying him for the U23 team. I believe both Sammy Sasso and Jakob Camacho are in their age 24 year and are too old for U23s.
