2023 Divisions and Regions Released

Any reason they are still using the 2021 EMIS numbers?
Was just looking into that myself, and noticed this message from the OHSAA concerning the 2021 season following the COVID year:

Changes to Bylaw 2 (Divisional Alignments for 2021-22 School Year) were ratified by the Board of Directors on October 1, 2020. The enrollment data and tournament divisions from 2020-21 will be utilized again in the 2021-22 school year. This change means that EMIS data will be collected in October 2021 and utilized in a new two-year cycle that would cover the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. With some schools not offering sports along with many students transferring to nontraditional learning modules in the 2020-21 school year due to COVID19, the Executive Director’s Office deliberated on how to handle enrollment data, since October 2020 is when the OHSAA traditionally would have received that data (EMIS) from the Ohio Department of Education for use in tournament representation, tournament division breakdowns and classifications for OHSAA District Athletic Board elections. It was determined that utilizing the same data for a third and final year was the fairest for all OHSAA member schools since any new data collected would likely be severely skewed and/or an unreliable representation.

That doesn't make any sense why are they not using 2022 numbers. They are classifying schools based on numbers where only 1 of the 3 classes are still at the school.

Right, we're not getting a clear picture of true enrollment at the moment. We will the season after next.

Toledo Central Catholic back down to the D3 this year seems to be the most significant change among the top divisions (along with Benedictine up to D2). Also some pretty drastic changes as far as CB numbers in D1. Ed's is down almost half of their 2022 CB and has their lowest total since CB started. Meanwhile, Ignatius has tripled last years count of 120 and has their highest total to date. St. X, which sported a whopping CB number of 653 last year is down to 471.

You can get a somewhat clear picture of true enrollment for public schools by go to the ODE's enrollment data page and downloading the spreadsheet from the October headcounts. It breaks down the overall number of students in each grade. It doesn't do it by gender so it's not perfect, but gives you an idea what kind of class sizes each school has coming up (though the Cleveland MSD ones are hard to figure). I dabbled with it the other week out of curiosity to see what the movement would have been if there was a recalculation for next year, and it looks like there would have been quite a bit of movement this year, so expect a lot of changes in 2024.

This should please everyone here, but if the OHSAA doesn't change how they tabulate Glenville, there is a 99.9 percent chance they will be D5 ... actually if they did a recount based off this year's 9-11, Glenville may have been D5 next year with a number in the low 200s. Looks like they would have been right at the 4/5 cutoff.

Lol, on one hand I would like to see them down there just to see how a Coldwater or Kirtland (both probably will be in D5 next time around) would fare. On the other hand, the OHSAA will probably have to redo how they count Glenville/Ginn Academy and bump them up to D3 where their combined enrollment (Glenville HS plus football players at Ginn counting toward them) would put them.

The fall 2021 numbers in the 21-22 school year are used for the 22-23 and 23-24 school years. There will be a new count done this fall for the following two years.
