Buffalo Elects a Socialist as Next Mayor

The Trump effect.
You still need this.

Good luck with that Buffalo but there's a lesson here and that is they throw these election in during times when nobody cares or with the way things are today and you constantly are bombarded and people are tired.

It’s also how we got Dementia Joe and the Fake African. It’s called the whiplash effect.
Yet the NYC Mayor race is likely to come down to a Former Cop and the creator of the Guardian Angels.

How does a Blue Collar/Rust Belt city like Buffalo elect a god dam Socialist?
Extremely high poverty rate along with a number of other social and economic problems that come from being decades removed from being a manufacturing/industrial powerhouse in the rust belt.

June's an odd time for a primary election, and with everything else people are focused on in the summer there was only around 20,000 votes in this race in a city of 260,000 people. Like most of the instances of someone this far to the left winning congressional elections, they ran a better ground game in the primary against a lazy entrenched incumbent that's largely failed to deliver much value for their constituents.

Still, these Modern Socialists are extremely disconnected from Blue Collar workers. Their appeal is spoiled 20-30 somethings who feel like they shouldn’t have to pay back their student loans and announce their pronouns to strangers. They don’t appeal to steel workers, stevedores, truck drivers, etc.

I don't know that I'd agree with that. The appeal I think is a lot broader than most here want to believe while also being not as deep. This isn't some wave movement but at the same time it's not exclusively younger adults. Poorer blue collar workers in urban core areas have a lot of the same problems and concerns as the yuppie Socialists regardless of their education level or occupation.

I think you hit the nail on the head with 20,000 votes out of 260,000 and I don’t think it’s got much to do with the time of the year... socialists are a very fevorent group that believes absolutely in their cockamamie ideas and will show up to primaries while the average blue collar worker doesn’t vote in primaries.

the overriding theme though is that the establishment, Dems and Republicans, have failed the working class so they may be more open to voting for radicals like these socialists in general elections. Or maybe they will wise up and buy Bitcoin. The Fed is the main problem in this country.

I’ve never known a blue collar person to be woke.

The Dems had to primary Bernie twice to keep him from being the nominee but there's no movement lol

Some of you people are so desperate to think things aren't getting bad you'll sanewash just about anything

I don’t think there’s a movement among real working class people. Look at the Bernie rallies and his supporters online, how many of them look like actual blue collar people?

I know plenty of blue collar people who are disillusioned. Unions are dying. They're looking for something. Socialism looks more secure than global capitalism, which is what the GOP has to offer outside of Trump

These types of people are your modern socialists

Blue collar and working class people typically care about rising costs of living, i.e. problems generally caused by inflation that disproportionately hurt those that are poorer.

Saying all of the folks that vote for these types of people are wokes is up there with saying everyone who voted for Trump is a racist.
