I'd say born doesn't count....has to play and star in HS to count.Montgomery County
Mike Schmidt
Edwin Moses
Keith Byars
Ron Harper
Schmidt, Moses, Byars are no Brainers IMO. There are probably a dozen others that could lay claim to the 4th spot.
If you allow for Roger Clemens who was born in Vandalia he would be on the list.
Just so you know. There’s an Erie county in Ohio tooFrom Erie county:
Carter Starocci. Penn St. wrestler. He is currently a 4 time National Champion. Because of covid, he is a heavy favorite to win a 5th this coming season. He is absolute stud for PSU wrestling.
Fred Biletnikoff - Hall of Fame WR for the Oakland Raiders. And a 2 time Super Bowl Champion and 1 Super Bowl MVP.
Bruce Baumgartner - Olympic wrestling champion. Most decorated wrestler in the US history. In addition to his World and Olympic titles, Baumgartner amassed three golds at the Pan American Games, 17 American titles and eight World Cup wins. In 1995, he was awarded the James E. Sullivan Award (for the outstanding American amateur athlete) and in 2008 he was inducted into the US Olympic Hall of Fame.
Mike McCoy - Star player (DT) for the Green Bay Packers for 11 years. Mike received many awards including the Packers Rookie of the Year, Packers Dodge NFL Man of the Year, the Catholic College Player of the Year, Notre Dame Pro Player of the Year, and induction into the Erie, PA Pro Hall of Fame, Cathedral Prep Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
Thanks to poster mrIsn2, he found a huge oversight on my part. So I would probably take Mike McCoy off of my list and add:
The Carr family is a wrestling family from Erie, Pennsylvania that includes 16 children, nine of whom are boys. The Carrs are considered one of the most successful wrestling families in the world and have received the Bowlsby Family Legacy Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Many of the Carrs have achieved notable wrestling accomplishments, including:
**** The Carr Brothers could have their own Mt. Rushmore.
- Jimmy Carr
At age 15, Jimmy became a Junior World champion and at age 17, he competed in the 1972 Olympics, becoming the youngest American wrestler to do so.- Fletcher Carr
Fletcher was an All-American for the University of Tampa and became the first African-American head coach in NCAA Division I.- Joe Carr
Joe was an All-American at the University of Kentucky and is now a coach at the Carr Wrestling Academy in Lexington, Kentucky.- Nate Carr
Nate was an All-American at Iowa State and competed in the Olympic Games. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2003.
List them bad boysJust so you know. There’s an Erie county in Ohio too
Very well could be. I love Coach.Even though he wasn't born there, would you put Jim Tressel on the Mahoning Mt. Rushmore because that is where he became famous?
I think you could throw Rob Carpenter in the mix. Rob probably more so than Bobby.Fairfield County
Rex Kern
Caris LeVert
Allan Anderson
Dave Butcher
Kern is self-explanatory, as is Caris. Allan Anderson led the American League in best ERA at 2.47 in the 1988 season. Dave Butcher’s Pickerington Lady Tigers was crowned a paper national champion in 1999 by USA Today.
5 time all star and 5 world series champReally, you think O’Neil should be on the list? Brookhaven did produce athletes
Larry Kehres...Mt Union coach has to be up there. I beleive he's from Portage CoWell I will start one for Portage County
Jack Lambert
I am waiting for a call from John Tompkins to verify one of his Uncles coached in the NFL (a Murphy).
I do know. And in my post I mention Erie, PA. Thanks.Just so you know. There’s an Erie county in Ohio too
Yes, all around good athlete and coach at Mt Union.Larry Kehres...Mt Union coach has to be up there. I beleive he's from Portage Co
Norwalk just erected a statue of Brown last year in Downtown, Suhr Park to be exactDoes Norwalk and Severna Park Maryland get a claim of Paul Brown too?
As a fellow Wayne County guy I love the days I get to use Dean Chance on Immaculate Grid! When I look at Wayne County's top names, the ones that stand out to me are mostly coaches.
Here are my top 8: (but I'm only 37 years old, so I'm sure there are many people with much better historical knowledge than me.
Bobby Knight - https://waynecountysportshof.com/members/decade-of-the-1970s/bob-knight-76/

Tim Pettorini - https://waynecountysportshof.com/members/decade-of-the-2000s/tim-pettorini/
Maybe Marcus Sanders, RB from Ravenna? Didn't do a ton at future levels, but he was the MAN for the Ravens in 1999.Well I will start one for Portage County
Jack Lambert
I am waiting for a call from John Tompkins to verify one of his Uncles coached in the NFL (a Murphy).
Thanks for fixing itI do know. And in my post I mention Erie, PA. Thanks.
As you can see, you would need multiple Stark County Mt. Rushmores to cover all their deserving athletes.
Dick Schafrath and Larry Kolic come to mind. When I look at Wayne County's top names, the ones that stand out to me are mostly coaches.

Wow, that I didn’t know5 time all star and 5 world series champ
He's in Yankees monument park and Yankee #21 jersey is retired.
Defiance County:
Don Miller- One of the 4 Horsemen at Notre Dame
Ned Garver (MLB)
Chad Billingsley (MLB)
Jon Niese (MLB)
Niese barely beats out Bruce Berenyi (Fairview grad, MLB) based on longevity but both had similar careers.
All in all unless you look at legendary high schoolers, not a lot here. I was tempted to include Sam Hornish, that's how overall weak it is. But he graduated from Archbold, so I thought that would be cheating.
I would switch in Gradishar for Shavers.Trumbull Co.:
Paul Warfield, Warren Harding--Football
Willie Davenport, Howland--Track & Field
Earnie Shavers, Braceville--Boxing
Bill White, Warren Harding--Baseball
An incomplete list of other football greats from Trumbull Co.: Ross & Jim Browner, Warren Western Reserve; Maurice Clarett, Mario Manningham, Korey Stringer, Warren Harding; Randy Gradishar, Champion; Joe Thomas, Bristol (Somehow, a guy from a school that doesn't play football became GM of the Colts and Dolphins); Bo Rein and Tony Mason, Niles
