Brentwood Academy's lead collapses at No. 1 Trinity
By Steve Jones | Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A back-and-forth game turned into another Trinity blowout on high school football's opening night Friday.

The Shamrocks shook off a first-half deficit to dominate Brentwood Academy in the second half and win 52-23 for their 26th consecutive victory.

Trinity trailed 23-17 in the second quarter but scored 35 consecutive points to end the game.

Brentwood Academy scored touchdowns on plays of 20, 71 and 69 yards in the first half but had only 14 total yards in the third quarter and only three second-half first downs.

Brentwood Academy defensive back/wide receiver Jalen Ramsey, whose 69-yard touchdown reception put the Eagles ahead 23-17, said he takes little consolation in hanging around against a team that some polls have ranked No. 1 in the country.

"That's not what we go for at BA is competitive games; we go for wins, and it clearly didn't happen, so we've got to regroup," said Ramsey, a Southern Cal commitment.

D'montre Wade's 71-yard first-quarter TD run and Max Staver's long TD pass to Ramsey helped the Eagles lead 23-17 with 9:06 left in the second quarter.

Staver, who is committed to Florida, missed on his first four passes of the second half, and the Eagles never crossed midfield in the third quarter. He finished 10-of-24 passing for 153 yards.

Nashville Ensworth also beat Memphis University School 35-28. Ensworth is nationally ranked in some polls, and won a private school division state championship last year. MUS was a state semifinalist in their private school division from last year.

Ensworth overcomes big passes to beat MUS
By David Martin | For The Tennessean

Ensworth withstood a furious passing attack to defeat visiting Memphis University School 35-28 Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Senior quarterback Jordan Rodgers passed for 385 yards and three touchdowns for the Owls, but the ground game and big-play defense of the Tigers prevailed.

Corn Elder rushed for 230 yards and four touchdowns to pace the Tigers, but his fourth-quarter fumble gave MUS one last chance to tie late in the game. But senior linebacker Cody Pack put pressure on Rodgers on consecutive incomplete passes, and the Tigers got the ball back.

Senior quarterback Andrew Bowers then converted two third downs on running plays and ran out the clock.

"They didn't surprise with their passing, but they were still able to move against us," Ensworth coach Ricky Bowers said.

Ensworth broke a 14-14 halftime tie when Elder ran 65 yards on the first play of the second half. Anthony Batey then made a leaping interception of a Rodgers pass and ran it to the Owls 5-yard line. Elder took it in from there, and Ensworth never looked back.

MUS twice drove into Tiger territory in the closing minutes, but a fumble and an intentional grounding call killed the drives.

MUS started the game with a 65-yard drive. Rodgers completed six passes, including a 16-yard touchdown to Devin Perry.

Ensworth answered with a quick score as Elder had consecutive runs of 27 and 33 yards, the latter for a touchdown.

The Owls again drove down the field but missed a long field goal. Ensworth gave the ball back on the next play as Elder fumbled.

On third down, Rodgers scrambled to the 12, setting up a fourth and 5. But holding was called and Bowers took the penalty. Rodgers found Devin Perry in the corner of the end zone on the next play and the Owls led 14-7 late in the first quarter.

The Tigers responded with an 87-yard, seven-play drive to tie the score early in the second.

FWIW, I made it to the Hyattsville (MD) DeMatha vs Chantilly (VA) Westfield scrimmage. DeMatha looked very good on both lines, in particular. They really controlled the line of scrimmage.

The Stags have an excellent tailback, and good size at WR. However, their WRs didn't really catch any tough balls, but they did catch a rainbow pass from the QB for a 90+ yard TD.

I didn't see anyone particularly outstanding at either LB or DB, though. DeMatha's DL was very good, however.

Interestingly, the Stags head to Durham, NC, to take on Hillside HS. Hillside is a Class 4A school in NC that made it to the state semis. I'm very interested to see how that one will turn out. Westfield has a long way to go, especially on defense, this year.
