PICKERINGTON -- The Pickerington Tigers running game overpowered the visiting Dublin Coffman Shamrocks Friday night and the hosts pulled a mild 28-14 upset in Ohio Capital Conference Ohio Division action on a sloppy field at Tiger Stadium in Pickerington.

The Pickerington (6-1, 3-1 OCC Ohio) win over Dublin Coffman (6-1, 3-1 OCC Ohio) not only handed the No. 2 ranked team in the Associated Press Division I football poll its first loss, but also knocked the Rocks out of a tie for the top spot in the division with Gahanna, who leads the Ohio Division with a 4-0 mark. The Tigers and Coffman are now tied for second in the division.

Pickerington's run attack was more suited for the miserable field conditions. A torrential rain soaked the already saturated field and created mostly mud in the center of the playing surface, but the Tigers held up much better than the Rocks' air attack. Pickerington gained 232 of its 265 yards on the ground, grinding out the win yard-by-yard.

Dublin Coffman, meanwhile, had difficulty gaining yardage, not only due to the soggy field but also to a strong Tiger defense. Coffman gained just 82 yards rushing in the contest. Notre Dame-bound quarterback Brady Quinn threw for 192 yards and one touchdown for the Rocks, but completed just 13 of 32 passes in the game.

Turnovers also killed the Rocks. Coffman had three fumbles, lost all three, and two of them went for Pickerington touchdowns.

The Tigers scored early and took control later in the first quarter. Pickerington moved the ball 77 yards on eight plays on the first drive of the game, scoring when A.J. Trapasso carried around left end 26 yards for the first touchdown.

Dublin Coffman threatened to get the points back quickly as Quinn completed a short pass in the flat that receiver Tim Carpenter turned into an apparent 62-yard scoring play, but a Coffman player illegally blocked a Pickerington player at the nine-yard line. The penalty negated the score, but still gave the Rocks the ball at the Pickerington 19.

Two Tiger penalties, an offside and a pass interference, gave Coffman a pair of first downs, and the Rocks eventually moved the ball to the Tiger one-yard line, but on second and goal, the Tigers' Aaron Korbar knocked the ball from the Rocks' Chris Gatton and into the end zone, where Picktown's Ryan Manalac fell on the football for a touchback.

Coffman's next drive ended abruptly as Quinn fumbled the snap from center on the second play of the drive and Pickerington's Stuart Reid recovered at the Rocks' 32.

The Tigers scored on the first play of the second quarter to cap the march as Richard Adams plunged over from a yard out, giving Pickerington a 14-0 lead, one the held the rest of the period.

Coffman closed within a touchdown in the third quarter, driving 60 yards on 14 plays in four minutes, 26 seconds and converting a third down and a fourth down along the way. The Rocks scored when Quinn optioned down the right side of the line and pitched to Brandon Barcus, who carried three yards for the touchdown.

After Coffman stopped the Tigers on the subsequent drive, the Rocks took over at their own 25, but two plays in, Gatton fumbled the handoff from Quinn and Pickerington's Mark Playko recovered at the Coffman 21. And to make matters worse for the visitors, the Rocks were called for unsportsmanlike conduct, moving the ball just outside the 10.

Pickerington ran one play to end the third quarter, then scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown two plays into the fourth when Tiger quarterback Dustin Ultican carried over from a yard away.

Coffman tried to get back into the game, but a fourth down pass attempt by Jeff Montee on a fake punt fell incomplete, and Pickerington took over at the Rocks' 37. Nine plays later, Adams scored again from one yard out, giving the Tigers plenty of insurance. Coffman drove 80 yards on 11 plays and scored on a 14-yard pass play from Quinn to Kyle Ruhl with 2:28 to play, but would not get the ball again.

Both teams weren't afraid to attempt to pull rabbits out of their collective hats either. Each team tried a little razzle-dazzle, but neither play worked. Coffman's pass by Montee fell short of Carpenter in the fourth, and Pickerington attempted a fourth-down shovel pass from Ultican to Jake Kuhner in the second quarter that went for a two-yard loss. The Tigers' Trepasso also tried a 32-yard field goal, but his plant foot slipped on the muddy surface and the ball sailed wide left.

Pickerington balanced out the rushing well. Trapasso led all rushers with 83 yards on 16 carries, Adams added 18 carries and 76 yards, Ultican had 54 yards on 13 rushes and Chris Henry carried three times for 23 yards. Ultican threw for only 33 yards, but completed 5-of-6 passes, all in the first half. P.J. Harrison had three catches for 26 yards.

Barcus led the runners for the Rocks, going 27 yards on five carries. Gatton and Clark Koury were right behind, Gatton with 25 yards on seven carries and Koury with 23 yards on seven totes. Quinn also added 12 yards on six carries in addition to his passing night. Chinedum Ndukwe, who will also attend Notre Dame next season, tied teammate Carl Heine for the team lead with three receptions, Ndukwe gaining 33 yards and Heine 27. Carpenter also had two catches for 72 yards.

Ohio Division action continues Friday. Pickerington will attempt to knock off another division leader when they visit the Lions of Gahanna, while Coffman will return home to host Westerville North's Warriors. Kickoff for both games is 7:30 p.m.
