No. 1 in the country

That's awesome and all... but what does having a number 1 ranking in the nation pre-season get you?

A HUGE X ON YOUR BACK, not that there already wasn't one, but it doesn't mean really anything... all it says is that you have the most potential of any team across any state, when less than 5% of the top 25 teams might have a chance of actually playing against each other.

Can anyone really say for a 100% fact that St. X is better than Independance, or Hoover, or whoever... and visa versa? I know college football/basketball teams don't all play each other, but at least there have more than 2 common opponents among the teams to make comparisons. Ohio Football and Texas Football are 2 very different entities, as is every state.

There's something wrong in the world when there are high school football national pre-season rankings done by 8+ different organizations. And there are lots of people who care about said pre-season rankings. Just my opinion.

“This year’s team hasn’t done anything yet,’’ Specht said.

And who is prepnation.com?

But what it does say is that the St. Xavier has a NATIONAL reputation. This will have a spillover effect on college athletic recruiting, college admissions (academic) and later in the national job market.

On a sinical note, if ESPN has decided to cover the St. Xavier-DeMatha game, why not 'convince' one of the so-called "national" rating agents of high school teams to rank St. Xavier #1 rather than #5. It would do nothing negative to the TV ratiings. A smart TV programming exec wouldnt do anything so self-serving would he/she? Naaah.

There are a lot more nationally-televised games than just St. Xavier this year, and any one of those teams could have been named #1.
