Let's be honest:
To be like ML it takes everything to be aligned. Great community, great parents, great school board members, great administration, great teachers, great head coach, great assistant coaches, great athletes, and church on Friday morning.
Great Jr. High philosophy.....all participate.
What did I leave out?
Other than hard work, determination and belief I believe you got them all.

True. Fans thoughts mean nothing.

However........parents need to be on board.

When kids come home from practice or a game and complain of the coaching...the parents need to back the coach or it will.just continue to fester.

If kids say it's too hard, complaining about PT, anything, the parent needs to reinforce the process, the hard work, and let the kid know he needs to do what the coaches want and are asking to be done because if they start to pile on and badmouth the coach with the kid then you have a toxic situation and it will only get worse.

Now behind closed doors the parent may agree with the kid, but for success to become the norm in a program the kids MUST buy in to the program and parents bad mouthing or agreeing with Lil Timmy that the coach is a jackalope will always end poorly.
a coach can lose a team because ofthe Kitchen table talk with the parents and their child...

I’m seeing a lot of optimism about Minster. Giving up 21 pts to a bad Ft. Loramie team week 1 isn’t a good sign. Don’t know much about Africentic to know how quality of a win that is.
Africentric is likely to get beat up this coming week, but I think they win 6 of their final 7. Small number of players on the team, but they are big boys. Just shot themselves in the foot over and over against Minster.

Africentric was better than I was anticipating. The real challenges start in mac play..

West Jefferson fans were slobbering all over how good they were after week 1

I was talking to some folks the other night while sipping on some brews.. some one asked the top 5 mac football coaches in order… does anyone have any opinion? Stumped me. Full of great coaches. 5, in order, is tough. Mainly after the first 2- Goodwin, Otten.

It’s also a tough discussion because reality is… some schools just have more talent than other school. Sometimes it may be hard to tell how much is coaching, how much is talent.

To have a list of best MAC coaches and leave out Coach John Reed, God Rest His Soul, is absurd.

Coach Otten just passed him in wins and just one game above Coach Reed.

There is NO Coldwater football 'dynasty" without Coach John Reed.

None.

Coach Reed had 9 MAC titles second only to Coach Goodwin.

His discipline and the way he ran the program has been adopted by many. He took a program that had a total of zero playoff wins, and 1 appearance I believe, and changed the culture immediately with a playoff appearance that was a state semi finalist his first season of 1995. CW missed in 1996 and.....has.not missed the playoffs since then.

168-31 with Coach Reed and 23-47 in 7 seasons prior and don't forget his 10-0 season at Parkway.

I love Coach Otten. He is an amazing person, someone I can start up a conversation immediately a few times a year I run into.him, and was the PERFECT person to take over when John passed away in January of 2009.

Coach Reed took a sinking ship and skippered the second most successful program in the state during his time.

Coach Reed teams orchestrated what I consider 2 of the largest upsets in HS in defeating Ketteting Alter in 3OT,while down 28-7 and 42-21 and the Goliath Mooney....
I put Coach Reed right behind Coach Gooodwin.

Reed is not an active coach....that I'd how I took the question, at least.

Good copy.

I had coach Reed on the mind this weekend. With the long drive to Clinton Massie we talked CW FB history with some that weren't even born when CW went through their dark days and previous coaches. They were interested to find out a coach was actually fired IN season back in the day....

so would coach Schulte be considered one of the top coaches in the past few years... the numbers have dropped and while they have had a few very talented players... it's not like the days when they were rolling out 80 plus kids on the field...

and with the drop in numbers.. the wins have dropped also

Agree.. other than that, I don’t think there’s been much talent over there…
while they have had ONE tremendous class ( it trumped one of Minster's best classes in 2019) they have had some pretty good talent playing alongside those railroad tracks...

That senior class Anna had was amazing.
Has any MAC schools started 20+ seniors?

With that said...2018 as Jr's they tied for the MAC title and lost in the first round of the playoffs.

MAC Chanps don't lose in the first round....

I don't know when he started but Anna is below .500 in the playoffs.

I agree with most of your list.

Currently:

1. Tim Goodwin- The standard

2. Chip Otten- Coldwater's all time wins leader. Counting Middletown, he's close to 200 wins too!

3. Todd Schulte- Multiple titles. Continued the DSJ dynasty

4. Chris Schmidt- 2 titles. Rescued New Bremen fooball from near death.

5. Ryan Jones- Brought Versailles back to prominence

6. Nick Marino- Brought Anna a title.

7. Whitting- Still too early to tell. Seems like a good coach. Might win a title sometime.

8. Josh Werling- 1st year. St Henry seems to be improved some.

9. Brian Schmidt- He got Parkways numbers up. That's step 1.

10. Brent Niekamp- Has a state title. The rest I'll deferr to @IndianaBanana

I think that is unfair to put Niekamp that low below two 1st year coaches. Remember just a couple years ago a 2nd in State Coldwater team had their hands full with his team.

That 2021 Coldwater team was weird. They let a Delphos Jefferson team that went 1-6 in the NWC hang around with them for 3 quarters in week 11. And they only beat a 3-7 St. John’s 21-14.

For what it’s worth though, they beat Ft. Recovery 42-6 that season. Doesn’t seem like their hands were that full

Think he's talking 2020 when Coldwater actually won state and beat Fort Recovery by 2 TDs in the regular season and 28-26 in the playoffs. But it was 2020.
