Dover (4-3) vs Youngstown Boardman (4-3)

Well, wonder if Dovers offense will get anything going this game? Defense has played good lately. Dover needs to win this game. Could very easily be 6-1 but that's how it goes sometimes. Hopefully we see a better game plan for offense. I really have no words for what I've seen with the offense this year.

Boardman coming off a tough 3 pt loss to Harding in a game they really let slip away at the end.

Boardman is playing pretty well now that they are healthier with their top back (Ortiz) and top WR has been playing the past few games (Robinson). Also they got back their kicker last week who is at least slightly above average for a HS kicker. Last night was Ortiz 1st game fully back playing RB since week 1 and he went for 178 and 2 TDs.

Boardman is run heavy out of shotgun w/ an athletic QB and 2 main backs - Ortiz and Torres. They’ll take some shots throwing the ball. Kejuan Robinson is the go-to - athletic and great hands.

Boardman is relatively average size-wise.

What’s the scoop on Dover? You guys took Canfield to the wire so I’m kind of expecting another 1 score difference type game this week. Both teams with heartbreaking losses so we’ll see how each respond. Boardman can likely lock in a playoff spot w/ a W.

Dovers defense has been good all year for the most part. Offense has been the problem. Seems like a there's times the offense will go right down and score and look great then just look bad the rest of the game. We did lose our top offensive player a few weeks back he's done for the season, but even when he was playing the offense still seemed to struggle. I think this will be a tough game. Both teams can probably clinch a playoff spot with a win.

Dover should win this one based off of what I have seen from both teams. I saw the WGH game last night and of course saw Dover play Canfield.
Prediction Dover 28 Boardman 6

I’d hope it’s a lot closer than that. I think Boardman’s as good or better than teams like Allderdice, Lake Catholic and Indian Valley who all lost closer games to Dover.

I wouldn’t totally discredit Harding either. They’ve by far played the area’s best schedule and hung in there with some really good teams. They could easily be a 4-3 or 5-2 type team with a more reasonable D2 schedule. Hudson, Medina, SVSM, and Massillon are top D1/D2 teams and Ursuline is probably the team to beat in D3/R9 (no offense to Canfield).

It might be closer, it just depends on what adjustments both teams I suppose. They both have some work to do for sure. Canfield has a lot of things to address before they play Boardman as well.

I really liked what I saw from Ortiz. Kid has some wheels, especially when Boardman runs left. I was shocked that they went away from that strategy late against Harding.

I think this is definitely a touchdown game 1 way or the other. Dover really needs this game badly, especially after seeing the result of Linsley over Steubenville. I think most people (myself included) assumed that would be a fairly easy win.

Agreed, this is definitely a must win for Dover. It looks like Steubenville made a lot of mistakes in the Linsly game with penalties but that game will not be the easy win we counted on when looking at the schedule at the start of the year. A win here would give the boys some much needed confidence the rest of the way after 3 tough losses.

The best thing that could happen this week is take the playbook out of Iffts hands and let someone else call the plays. It’s the worst play calling I’ve saw in the high school level in years. Either bring up the freshman coach to call the plays or the jones guy that they got Rid of two years ago. Both 10x better then the play calling now.

Dover wins this game. Should have been up 21-0 at halftime last week.

What's the reason Coach Ifft change his offense after all these years? Now more of a run based I'm told.
I could be wrong, but I believe he ran/coached the wing T until about 2003 (switched to the Kenton 5-wide). So I think it’s more of going back to older roots. The only reasons I could think of are the heavy passing offenses sputtering when the weather gets cold in the playoffs/not having the guys this year to run the spread effectively. There are a lot of bigger kids, so maybe he thought the strength of the team would be its power. Just my speculation.

Agreed. Boardman ran the ball well all night vs Harding, but tried to get too cute a few times instead of just keep pounding it and it cost them the game. To Harding’s credit they didn’t fall for those plays and threw Boardman for a big loss, which tended to derail a good drive where they were getting 3-5 yards a carry.

Pretty much spot on but I will add that teams learned how to defend the spread better as the years rolled by. Back then we fans longed for a running game to balance things out,now we want passing for the same reason.

Agreed 100%. I was extremely happy for Jake Daugherty. I’ve known his family for over 30 years. Great people.

Jones stepped aside to let his sons play without being coached by their dad.

I’m leaning towards Boardman winning a close game here. If this was five years ago with the air raid offense Dover ran if pick them, but I think as always Boardman is strong against the run. I think they bounce back after Harding game.

Boardman gave up 270 yards on the ground to Harding. I haven't seen other games statistics so maybe this was an off week for them?

We seem to have a keep it simple approach, personally I doubt we have the grit to pound out wins in the d2 tournament, which is what initially caused us to abandon the wing t after a couple of losses to Columbus parochials over 20 years ago.

But what do I know? Game has changed a lot since then and I trust our coaches.

I don't think it was the wing-t that caused those losses, it was our defenses. It had been quite a few years up until last year that Dover has had a respectable defense. Imagine if the 06' team, the 09' team, and a few others after that had a defense like last year's team. Even this year's defense is way better than those defenses were. We'd have a couple state titles by now. Some of those offenses we had were something to behold.

I think those defenses weren’t as good because the offense scored so quickly, that the defense would get tired from the short rest. Wakefield obviously had a huge impact last year, but in the past the defense suffered from the offensive explosiveness.
