DELAWARE -- The Buckeye Valley Barons kicked the running game into gear Friday night en route to a 26-0 victory over the Highland Fighting Scots Friday night in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Buckeye Valley (1-1, 1-0) gained 263 of their 331 yards of total offense on the ground behind a solid offensive line, the legs of all four Baron backs and a solid defensive effort in clutch situations.

Highland (0-2, 0-1) ran up 280 yards of total offense, but killed itself with mistakes. The Scots turned the ball over five times -- three fumbles lost and two interceptions, both picked off by Baron sophomore safety Nathan Roberts -- and committed 10 penalties for 58 yards. Highland sophomore quarterback Justin Scarbrough was also sacked eight times in the game for a loss of 46 yards.

Highland took the opening kickoff from their own 31 to the Buckeye Valley 19, but a holding call, two rushes for seven yards an incomplete pass and a fourth-down sack stopped the drive at BV's 30. The Barons used just over four minutes of clock and nine plays to drive the 70 yards to paydirt, capped by a 13-yard touchdown run by junior tailback Ryan Smart.

Three plays into the Scots' next drive, Roberts stepped in front of a Scarbrough pass and ran untouched 28 yards into the end zone. Senior tight end Colt Brownstead added the two-point conversion run to give the Barons a 14-0 lead near the end of the first period.

Buckeye Valley would not score again until the first possession of the second half. Baron junior quarterback Kyle Rehner helped set up the score with a 58-yard pass to junior receiver Adam Hall that brought the ball to the Highland 14. Three plays later, Rehner darted between Scot tacklers nine yards for another score, putting the Barons ahead 20-0.

One of Highland's best chances to score came on the following possession, when Scarbrough and junior receiver Cody Simms connected on a 34-yard pass play to the Baron 31, and a personal foul call on Buckeye Valley pushed the ball to the BV 16. But on the next play from scrimmage, Scot junior running back Tim Davis coughed up the ball at the Baron nine-yard line and Hall recovered for Buckeye Valley.

The Barons would score again in the fourth quarter, driving 78 yards on 13 plays and using 5:04 of clock. Junior fullback Bryan Santschi dove over from a yard out with 7:10 to play to give Buckeye Valley their final margin of victory.

Smart carried for 139 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown to lead all rushers. Rehner added 74 yards on 13 carries and another touchdown while completing 2-of-3 passes for 68 yards. Santschi, senior fullback Chris Hughes and senior tailback Tony Cain added 19, 17 and 15 yards on the ground, respectively, while junior tight end Jeremy Tiller also closed with one pass reception for 10 yards.

Davis topped the Highland rushing attack with 96 yards on 13 carries, while senior running back Steven Stillwell added 35 yards on five totes. Joe Ulrey also closed with five carries for 14 yards. Scarbrough had a strong second half, closing the game by completing 12-of-22 passes for 183 yards, six going to Simms, who led all receivers with 119 yards.

Both teams return to MOAC action next Friday night, with Buckeye Valley traveling to Mount Gilead and Highland venturing to Morral to take on Ridgedale.
