2024 WBL talk

Article in today’s Celina Daily Standard about a community town hall and also committee to discuss Celina athletic facilities long term master plan. My gut tells me Celina will have a new football stadium and new gym with both current facilities being razed.
I've heard both but haven't seen anything In writing. Can't wait to read the article

Why/ How often does Celina sell out the Fieldhouse which IMO is the best bball venue in the area.

Did they say how big of a football stadium they were going to build?
No. That piece of the puzzle is TBD. My thing is, if you tear down the Fieldhouse and leave the football stadium, you will need to build new locker rooms, rest rooms, and concessions.

Two options IMO, leave the Fieldhouse and stadium or tear both down and build new.

I kinda wish they’d just do a little bit of modern upgrading like Van Wert did instead of just destroying everything if they decide to do anything. Refurbished bleachers, pressbox, concessions, court, and keep the field the same though cause real grass is better imo

A big expense is when they tear down the Ed Complex (Original high school) and have to rebuild the south wall of the Fieldhouse. That is going to be a fragile undertaking.

Not sure what's going on with the WBL All Sports Trophy. Haven't seen an announcement by the WBL and the website isn't updated. I ran the numbers, just out of curiosity. Threw it all in a spreadsheet and the spreadsheet did the math. I used the formula that the WBL used based on the old spreadsheets they have on their website. No guarantees this is the exact formula the WBL still uses, but my best stab at it given we haven't heard anything yet.

WBL has officially announced Shawnee as the All Sports Trophy winner. Shawnee has won this 4 out of the last 5 years.

Still very disappointed Wapak decided not to continue the series with Marion Local. This was a very exciting, very competitive week one game that drew large crowds. I think both teams benefitted tremendously the rest of the year from this measuring stick game. Both teams won at least of share of the league titles the last 2 years (3 years for Marion and maybe Wapak) so it didn't hurt them in league. Glad St. Marys chose to start a series with the Flyers going forward. Wish it started this year given what the Flyers have coming back but it will be good for both in the years ahead.

Other schools don't have to schedule, just to make Marion Local fans happy. Glad Wapak played ML the last 3 years but time to move on or at least Wapak thought so and I predict Wapak will do just as good or not so good in the WBL whether they play Marion Local or not.

If anything, Toledo St. Johns gets them a D2 win from a team who usually makes the playoffs (nice points day) and has the type of athletes Wapak would see later in the playoffs.

Note I said better athletes, NOT better team. ML would beat St. Johns 9 times out of 10 because they're better coached, played together forever, etc. But the athletes at the skill positions for the big city privates are at a higher level and it's something a team with dreams of winning their region like Wapak needs to see.

Glad you're excited about St Marys, but I'm not sure you should expect anything long term. Since the end of the Sidney series, St Marys has been scheduling home-and-home series. First with London, currently St Henry, and then Marion Local. London and St Henry have been a two-year agreement. I don't know the terms of the SM-ML scheduling deal, but I'd be surprised if they made it long term.

Good point Stir. I wasn't trying to imply they should do it to make Marion Local fans happy. I completely agree.

I was suggesting they do it because it was a high intensity, ultra competitive game that prepared both teams for the season to come. For sure, they can do well without playing the Flyers still and I wish them the best of luck!

It was just one of those openers that had fans on both sides pretty excited. Hope both teams have a great 2024.

Exactly my point since last season. I am glad Celina is playing Columbus South, though I wish we would have picked up Trotwood. Now for 2025 I am hearing chirps of playing St. Henry.

And if they lose, they get nothing (bad points day) and they either traveled a long way to get beat, or hosted a game that would have half (probably worse) the crowd that Marion Local would bring.

Not trying to tamp down your idea but I'm kind of failing to see the logic of this if this is why it wasn't renewed.

Wouldn't you want to play, learn from, face stiff competition and maybe try to emulate the team that would beat your new opponent 9 out of 10 times over trying to play a team with maybe 4 better athletes but a worse team? Seems counter productive. Why wouldn't Wapak just try to learn to play like ML and they wouldn't have to worry about an athletics disparity because your team play would counteract the maybe 3 better athletes in the playoffs?

I would say Elida athletics are sad but they've been sad for at least the last decade or more in this century.

Here's my two cents on the Wapak-Marion Local series ending:

Marion Local folks need to move on. It was already a 3-game series. The first two games were clear cut Marion Local wins, even though the 2022 edition was the Flyers' toughest game in their entire season until the Flyers met Kirtland in the title game. Last year's game was obviously an instant classic. It showed Wapak more than had the horses to beat Marion Local, but what it showed even more was how severely out-coached Wapak was in the fourth quarter. Don't get me wrong, Moyer is a good coach, but Goodwin is a living legend. If it were as easy as any school "just try to learn to play like ML" then ML wouldn't be anything special. Same with Kirtland in Northeast Ohio. The difference is that it's easier said than done. Goodwin and LaVerde have the dynasties they do for a reason. At the end of the day, Wapak gave Marion Local their best shot and, despite them being highly attended and somewhat competitive games, they came up short. There's no shame in that, but it's also fair for Wapak to want to move on to something different. Wapak's 0-3 in the series and can easily find other competitive, intriguing match-ups. It's unfortunate that's not as much the case for Marion Local in terms of schools not wanting to schedule them, but that's not Wapak's problem. As Stirred said above, it's not the WBL's priority to alleviate the MAC's scheduling problems. However, it is great that St Marys scheduled the Flyers. Those should, similarly, be well attended local games for the fanbases, but I'd expect the Flyers to cruise and the Roughriders to not extend the series long-term. St Marys did, inexplicably, get shut out by St Henry to start last season after all.

Toledo St. John's Jesuit will be a quality game for Wapak. The away stands won't be packed in the same way, but the attendance will be fine considering it's a Wapak home game and it's the first game of the season. Their fans show out for football, especially the season debut. Another benefit to Wapak scheduling SJJ is that it's a more winnable game, which also means they will have a better shot at a top 4 seed and hosting the first two weeks of the playoffs. Now I'm sure this isn't the reason Wapak moved on from the Marion Local series, but it is an added benefit. They have a great facility, they might as well use it. Having a higher playoff seed might also be beneficial since the Wapak football program postseason expectations have never been higher. If Wapak does finally break through and win a regional title, then TCC is likely in the wings waiting, so a game against SJJ will be a relevant measuring stick. The Wapak-Marion Local series was a good one, but Marion Local needed Wapak more than Wapak needed Marion Local, as evidence by the three game series with two games being in Wapak. Wapak is moving on to something different and Marion Local will, as usual, be just fine.
