Looking toward next season, 27 players return with varsity experience (*21 started at one point)

Juniors (14): *Napier, *O’Malley, *Hall, *Weber, *Patrick, *Cengia, *Folke, *J. Kattus, *Beck, *Jennings, *McClatchey, *Klare, Brice, *Hammond

Freshmen (7): Reeder, Taylor, Clapper, Stegbauer, *Zay. Harvey, *Zar. Harvey, *G.Hester

With all the returning talent and experience, battles will occur at every position and of course the most anticipated will be at QB........

Quarterback Position (2022 Varsity Stats)
#7 Chase Herbstreit Jr. 6'1" 178lb (64 for 116 for 852 yards 54% 4 TDs/1INTs)
#17 Daniel Vollmer So. 6’1” 176lb
#10 Jack O’Malley Sr. 6'1" 186lb (89 for 146 for 1,174 yards 61% 9 TDs/3 INTs)
------------------------------------------
Ben Soloria Jr. 5’10” 165lb

This is the most anticipated battle: Herbstreit, Vollmer and O'Malley
Growth spurts will be interesting to watch as some could grow up to another 3 inches.
With Vollmer being an athlete there is a slight chance he moves to RB/WR for the next 2 years and returns to QB his Sr season.

Also a good chance O’Malley and Soloria, also being athletes, change positions.
O’Malley on return from his week 5 concussion began working out at the free safety position.
Soloria is more likely to switch to the WR position.

Running Back Position (2022 Varsity Stats)
#4 Steve Napier Sr. 5’10” 193lb (172 carries for 750 yards for 4.4 ypc and 4 TDs; 10 catches for 76 yards)
#21 Gage Patrick Sr. 5’6” 166lb (130 carries for 599 yards for 4.6 ypc and 7 TDs; 4 catches for 31 yards)
------------------------------------------
#22 Spencer Stegbauer So. 5’9” 165lb (3 carries for 6 yards vs LCA)

#16 Ben Lehman Jr. 5’10” 177lb
#2 Caron Seymour Jr. 5’9” 195lb
#99 Prince Roberson Jr. 5’11” 185lb
Mathias Le Jr. 6’0” 170lb
Brady McDonald So. 6’0” 168lb
Brayden Reilly So. 6’2” 158lb

A ton of talent at this position.
Expect Napier to come back strong from his late season injury
Patrick showed that despite his size can carry the rock often and effectively
Spencer Stegbauer got some varsity carries vs LCA and he is likely the fastest RB in the group

Lehman played a lot of varsity special teams and will likely change positions for some P/T
Seymour and Roberson are powerful runners in the mold of Napier but both could move to the LB position
Le and McDonald are very similar runners and could surprise at next years camp.
Both could be candidates for position changes next season for P/T
Reilly likely to switch to the TE position given his size and athleticism

Wide Receiver Position (2022 Varsity Stats)
#80 Jack McClatchey Jr. 6’1” 180lb (17 catches for 280 yards for a 16.5 yard per catch average and 3 TDs)
#20 Andrew Weber Sr. 5'10" 155lb (12 catches for 120 yards for a 10 yard per catch average and 1 TD)
#28 Cam Taylor So. 6’1” 175lb

#82 Simeon Betts Jr. 6’1” 170lb
#22 Hayden Shamsi Jr. 6’0” 170lb

#84 Chase Staderman Jr. 5’9” 150lb

McClatchey and Weber are the only returners with varsity catches.
Weber will likely play safety where he moved to midseason.
Cam Taylor was Vollmer’s prime target on the frosh team this season.
He played varsity minutes in the last 4 games of the year.

Betts and Shamsi have potential to be productive WRs next season as juniors
Staderman moved up to varsity at the end of the season is a slot receiver

This is a position that as usual at StX will see a lot of influx from players making a position transition.
The list of players that could switch to WR next season is long: Vollmer, Soloria, O’Malley, Reilly, McDonald, Clapper, Weber etc.

Quarterback Position (2022 Varsity Stats)
With Vollmer being an athlete there is a slight chance he moves to RB/WR for the next 2 years and returns to QB his Sr season.
2 former Bombers successfully did this: Matt Williams (Class of 1999) and Mike Healey (Class of 1988)

In 1997 as a junior Matt Williams was one of senior QB Jayson Arling's favorite targets catching 33 passes for 698 yards.
In 1998 Williams moved to QB his senior year and led X to a 13-2 record losing to Canton McKinley in the state finals 33-10
Williams was inducted into StX Hall of Fame in 2016 (1st team GCL in basketball and football 5 years total)

In 1985 as a sophomore Mike Healey was senior QB Greg Frey's favorite wide receiver catching 36 passes for 673 yards.
Frey passed for 2,970 yards and 28 TDs in that 10 game regular season.
In 1986 and 1987 Healey moved to QB and is 5th at X in career passing yards with 3,270.
He went on to play QB at Vanderbilt from 1989-1991
He was inducted to the StX Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Buddy LaRosa's Sports Hall of Fame in 2006

Does St X move Ted Hammond to Offensive Line next season? I think he makes a heck of a OT or C, good luck to any DT trying to go up against that dude. I realize this might not be a popular post but I heard from several folks who I think have some good insight that some of the D1 Offers Hammond has want him to play offensive line. He could always continue to play DL at StX and then move for college, but with only one returning starter on the Offensive Line coming back who knows what happens.

Offensive Line
#79 Tucker Kattus Jr. 6’5” 275lb offers from Kentucky and Miami OH
#54 Andrew Jennings Sr. 6’3” 225lb
#58 Eric Fleetwood Jr. 6’3” 288lb

#71 Luke Veech Sr. 6'3" 230lb
#57 Derek Kautzman Sr. 6'0" 230lb
#59 Rex Folivi Sr. 5'7" 214lb
#61 Collin Lowe Sr. 5'10" 236lb
#64 Brendan Teiken Sr. 5'11" 249lb
#67 Carter Grubb Sr. 6'1" 170lb
#75 Leo Tombragel Sr. 6'2" 190lb
#68 Charlie Lynch Jr. 5’11” 230lb
#62 Grant Hester So. 6’3” 225lb
Grant Abercrombie Jr. 5’10” 230lb
Elijah DuBois Jr. 5’9” 250lb
Camden Wiles Jr. 6’1” 235lb
Charlie Moser Jr. 5’9” 212lb
Jimmy Brown Jr. 6’1” 215lb
KJ Cammon Jr. 5’9” 195lb
Jake Naylor So. 6’1” 205lb

Who will develop/grow/strengthen in the offseason?
The Coach T weight program usually adds 15-20% muscle

Kattus and Jennings are pretty much locks for starting positions given how well they played on varsity this season.
I think Eric Fleetwood (injured this season) will be moved to offensive line and possibly play center position like his brother Evan.

There are 7 seniors, 7 juniors and 2 sophomores listed above that could all be in the mix.

Maybe Fleetwood plays NG and is flanked by Sulfsted, JKattus and Brice allowing Hammond to move to OLine, especially if that will be his college position

Tight End Position
#87 Luke Klare Sr. 6'5" 210lb (4 catches for 40 yards)
Jacob Wassler Jr. 6’7” 230lb
#95 Will Hester Sr. 6’3” 227lb

John Veith So. 6’3” 205lb
Josh Wassler So. 6’1” 173lb
Brayden Reilly So. 6'2" 158lb

Solid prospects for this important part of the Coverdale system.
Klare, who also is a long snapper, will add another 25lbs in the offseason
Jake Wassler shows real promise with his 6’7” frame and showed on JV that he can run the deep route and outstretch opponents
Reilly, who was used as a WR/RB on the frosh team should add significant bulk in the offseason to move to TE

What about the Defensive? It looks like a lot of returning players. Who will compete for each spot?

Looking at the Stats it looks like Weber has varsity catches as well.

Was Healey from the west side? Maybe our lady of lourdes??

Exactly right.
Moved to defensive secondary week 6 following safety Nolan Myers season ending injury.
With the amount of talent in the 2 classes behind him he may be able to move back to WR next season

Defensive Line (2022 Stats)
#97 Ted Hammond Sr. 6'5” 270lb offers from Vanderbilt, Temple, UMass, UConn and Miami (OH); 41 tackles, 4 sacks, 7 TFL
#37 Justin Kattus Sr. 6’2” 220lb; 21 tackles, 1.5 TFL
#90 Nate Brice Sr. 6’0” 215lb; 11 tackles, 1.5 TFL
#63 Gordy Sulfsted Jr. 6’4” 222lb; 4 tackles, 0.5 TFL

#58 Eric Fleetwood Jr. 6’3” 288lb
#94 Ben Boerger Jr. 6’1” 220lb

Cam Carter So. 6’1” 197lb
Ben Schmidt So. 6’1” 175lb
Eli Avery-Broun So. 6’1” 192lb

This will be one of the most experienced positions next season.
Hammond, Kattus, Sulfsted and Brice all started or played on varsity this season.

Since Hammond is being recruited to play OL at the next level does he move to OL his senior season given the amount of talent on the DLine?

Now that Kattus knows he will be playing down and not up he will likely add 25lbs in the off season and be more of a force next year.

Sulfsted finally got a varsity start in the final game and his potential is off the charts
Expect Gordy to be at 245lb and be a major force at the end position as a junior

Eric Fleetwood will bulk up to 300lb next year and will likely be moved to OLine but could see him at NG

Depending on how Boerger develops in the offseason he could crack the DLine rotation or be moved to LB
The 3 sophomores will likely have to wait their turn

Mike Healey was inducted to the StX Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Buddy LaRosa's Sports Hall of Fame in 2006
The Buddy LaRosa high school Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1975 to recognize outstanding athletes from area high schools. Each year, nominees are considered based solely upon high school accomplishments. Collegiate, professional, or other amateur achievements have no bearing on the selection process. The nominee must have graduated high school 10 years before eligibility may begin.

Beck and Clapper are D1 prospects and will be the stalwarts of the LB corps
Clapper played meaningful varsity minutes as a frosh at the end of the year and at 200lb next year will be a handful
Folke depending on his offseason progression could move to the secondary as the adjuster

The 4 juniors listed are excellent prospects and potential starters come next fall.

Heard a large group of bombers were already consistently back in the weight room. This team is eager to get better. Can’t wait to see what the future holds!
