Girls basketball enters regional tournaments; wrestling, ice hockey and boys basketball wrap up district tournaments this week

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced the regional tournament pairings in girls basketball Sunday, along with additional state tournament information in several sports.

OHSAA Tournament Media Credentials
For state tournaments, media are asked to apply for credentials using forms and information posted at: https://www.ohsaa.org/news/credentials
For sectional, district and regional tournament contests, media shall contact the site coordinator.

Tournament Ticket Information
On February 25, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced new protocols will increase spectator capacity to 25 percent for indoor sporting events and 30 percent for outdoor sporting events as long as facial coverings continue to be worn and other precautions are followed. However, that modification to spectator capacities cannot occur until the revised Ohio Department of Health Director’s Sports Order is approved. That is expected to take place soon, but an exact date is not known at this time. When that does happen, OHSAA tournament venues will decide if they are able to accommodate increased capacities.

Until then, the current Ohio Health Director’s Sports Order limits spectators at indoor events to the lesser of 15 percent permanent, fixed seats or 300 unless a variance was approved. All ticketing for OHSAA winter sports tournaments is being handled digitally by the OHSAA’s digital ticketing partner, HomeTown Ticketing, with direct contact with the participating schools from the OHSAA. Schools have entered facility information into myOHSAA so allotments for basketball tournament games can be established since tickets are split 50/50 split between the participating schools. Hiland and Ft Frye had a war last night. Great basketball game.

FF came out hot and Hiland cold, and got out to a 10 point lead in the first, but Hiland figured it out and got it tied at half.

Hiland had a slight advantage throughout most of the 2nd half, maintaining a 2-5 point lead, but FF would not go away. They stayed in the game, despite 20 turnovers, with outstanding rebounding, especially offensive rebounding, and solid defense. They also did something that very few coaches do when they play Hiland - they negated the depth that Hiland uses to wear you out. They were very deliberate on offense and made sure the game wasn't a track meet. When they did turn the ball over, it was either an inbound or they got back on defense.

FF actually took a 39-38 lead with about 4 min to go in the 4th, but it was all Hiland from there and the Lady Hawks scored the next 8 points, mainly on FTs. But hats off to FF's coach. He had the gameplan to pull the upset and his kids almost did it.

IVC Guy, you're right it was a Great game. Both teams played hard FF had a game plan and tried their best. They are a good team. Well played game by both team. And a well officiated game as also. Sometimes you don't get that. They called what needed to be called and let them play when they needed to be let play. Hiland will use this to get refocused for the next game. Shows them they just can't show up and win by 30. This isn't the IVC.

What you say there is absolutely true about the IVC, but I suspect there are some potential errors in the assumptions behind it.

First, Dave Schlabach does not allow his team to just show up. They play to a standard, not an opponent.

Second, Coach DS makes sure he schedules his non-conference so that they will face way better teams than they will face in their tournament challenge.

Third, he schedules to try to get beat by those non-conference foes. He actually wants them to be challenged and, even, get beat. I can't prove it, and I'm not saying he has intentionally lost games, but I am saying that I have seen a handful of times where he has put his team at a disadvantage in terms of match ups and line ups to manufacture a challenge and see how they respond.

Fourth, because CDS scouts every opponent thoroughly, and knows them as well as they know themselves, I'm very sure that he knew what Fort Frye was - which is a very, very well-coached team with very talented, skilled, and experienced players.

Fifth, I don't think Hiland had a lack of focus. I think Fort Frye's coach had a great gameplan, his players executed it (particularly with great defense, rebounding, and deliberate offense), and it resulted in a very fine game.

But to get to what I think you are really trying to say, yes, I thought FF was going to get rolled - by 20 at least, and possibly more. If they didn't execute well, that's what would have happened. But they did have the right plan and execution, so there is huge respect due to their coach and players.

If FF keeps on that track, they will be the Hiland of the regional at some point.

Dave Schlabach is retiring after this season.
