Disdain for the Less Educated Is the Last Acceptable Prejudice

The article is interesting but not for the reasons you likely posted it for. It’s central argument that educated look down on the uneducated is nothing more than a headline grabber. The meat of the article is that the Democratic Party saw the trends in offshoring, outsourcing, and automation and decided the best way to deal with it was to invest and help the people adapt. The counter strategy is to resist the change and adapt or return the economy to where the people are. I do think one of the reasons that Trump resonated with a chunk of the electorate is that they thought Trump could help them stay relevant without forcing them to change. Many humans hate to change. I would contend this is a losing strategy. Outsourcing and offshoring has not materially retracted in the last 4 years and there is not a way to stop the massive disruption continued automation will have. Americans will have to face the inevitable at some point even if they are buying the BS today.

We have adapted to automation for 150 years. That is not the issue at all.

The issue was/is the unnecessarily selling out of our manufacturing base (in return for $$$$$ and campaign contributions and Foundation contributions). The bureaucratic elites and swamp people who never had a real job took care of inflicting this horrific pain upon our society. They should be in jail.

We have the ability to make any product in a competitive fashion, if only our government and bureaucratic sellouts would get the hel! out of the way.

Trump won (and will win again) because of the economic rape committed by DC and global elites and bureaucrats upon our people. You can run from that reality all you want, but it will never change that reality.

Lol

The selling out of America's blue collar jobs has led to 30 years of stagnant wages and a massive wealth gap.
The exact problems Dems cry about now.
Their policies continue to lead to our problems today.

Enough is enough.

I mean slappy always includes "non-college educated" when lobs insults at Trump supporters.

The country has adapted to automation for many years. For some reason, it has suddenly become popular in some circles to stop. Let’s bring back coal mining. In 5-10 years, it will be be let’s bring back truck driving. Evolve or die.

Who’s more educated: A certified electrician or someone with 100k of Student Loans and a Gender Studies Degree? A degree is not always synonymous with an education.
That’s the problem on the left. People got useless degrees and are in debt for the rest of their life. Now they want American to burn to the ground because their life sucks

As Marty used to say, "swiiinggg and a miss".....

What you should get out of this is that our national leaders failed once again to recognize trends and changes in global commerce and technology. They thought that wages, taxes, and regulations could be increased at will because transportation costs of goods and services would keep America competitive in most industries. Offshoring, outsourcing, and automation took Democrats by surprise. They never anticipated the Chinese could flood the market with cheap steel. They never expected the Japanese to add quality to the low-cost vehicles they were importing. They never expected that the costs of transportation would drop to the point that it would be cheaper to manufacture entire goods overseas and import them here. They never expected India, Easter Europe, China, and other locations to educate and train people to replace American workers for 1/5th the money.

What resonated with people was that Trump understands business. He understands that to compete you need to unshackle American business from uncompetitive regulations and the heaviest tax burden in the world. It's tough to compete with low-wage, low-cost nations when American companies are saddled with costly regulations and excessive tax rates in addition to higher energy, labor, and benefit costs. There's no doubt why offshoring, outsourcing, and automation occur.

The problem was a government that sought to change the dynamic artificially, by making coal expensive through taxation and regulation vs allowing the replacement technologies to overcome their deficiencies and replace coal naturally. This is why California has rolling brownouts, this is why Ohio had HB6 to prevent the same thing.

AI is not going to replace truck drivers in 5-10 years unless something artificially mandates/changes the rules. It will eventually happen, but it will take changes in the laws and liabilities to really make it happen. Some things will change quickly, others will lag for a few decades. Then someone has to figure out the monetization of the technology, nothing is free.

Wait until driverless cars (uber/taxi) and trucks are the norm...the pace of automation is exponential and the GOP is party systematically attacking public education at almost every level. The GOP caters to the elites and .01 percent and they are doing VERY VERY well.

No Zuck and Ellison are trump supporters...but that is not the point our economy is structured in a way that sends the economic growth to fewer and fewer companies/people.
Oh. Evil rich people. Hard to keep track of what you're mad about on any given day.

Not evil rich people....just operating in a system that favors them. They will admit it and would be willing to change the system...don't pretend that trump cares about blue collar workers or has a plan to help bring back those "union" wages and middle class lifestyle for the majority of low educated workers.

Trump’s bluster on coal sure has turned the industry around. The industry has only lost 10K more jobs since he took over. Those people bought into Trumps promises hook line and sinker and all they've gotten from it Is more pain.

I think that also ties into never facing failure. They expect this degree with no real world job applications to be their ticket to a 6 figure salary and plush Brooklyn apartment.

A college degree whether you like it or not is a ticket to a higher income for most americans. There are exceptions in certain high skill areas...plumber, HVAC, electrician, but all of those trades require additional education. Sure you can own your own business and do very well, but the majority of workers stay workers and not owners. Obviously the degree matters, but many jobs just require a four year degree.

That is laughable. There is NOTHING surprising by what happened and there is nothing surprising by what will continue to happen. Trump can make promises to coal minors and to Lordstown until he is blue in the face. They are just lies and holding people back.

Can I ask what would the coal industry job loss have been if Hillary had been elected? I would be afraid to guess how many more than the number that Trump had.

Wait until the entire trucking industry gets sold out just like what has been happened to the retail industry. You fools will just watch it happen over and over again and get sold by another snake oil salesmen.

What is artificially changing the rules even mean? Wake up dude. Resistance to innovation has never worked and never will. Remember, guys like you die sooner rather than later.

The dems had a plan in place to transition coal workers into new industries. They had plans in place to bring green technology production into coal country. Instead of that these people got false promises and no path forward.

Instead of a plan forward, Trump goes backward by allowing for toxic coal waste to be dumped into the environment. Every day that goes by under Trump, sets these people and the places they live further back. It's a travesty.

Yea! Look at Solyndra for example!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get that the Dems have a "plan" to help workers transition to new opportunities but that still doesn't address their leadership's prejudice for less educated folks, especially those in the South and Midwest. Not saying the standard Republicans have empathy either, its just the folks running Trump's election have found that these folks feel neglected and have shown attention to them. Remember this is still the majority of people living in this country so a strategy of mocking them is not wise to gaining power.

By the way, most of the developed world is dealing with this same issue. Populists in Europe are basically speaking to the same less educated types, that is how you get the situations in Poland, Hungry, Korea, etc...
