Zach Slates fired as Perry begins search for new head coach

38 is a big number, but Perry is an attractive job. No doubt there's some worthy candidates on that list. Hope Perry gets the right man who can turn things around. There's enough talent there to build a winner.

I only found out the number....not who....so can't say yet
38 people who want the tuffness of a B&K Cafe breakfast.

Reading a lot of these posts talking about a “Perry guy,” “someone familiar with the Fed,” or Scott Daugherty. Perry doesn’t need a Wakefield 2.0. It’s time to move on. Slates was a huge mistake and the administration let that abominable experiment go for 4 seasons. Perry needs a fresh start, someone who’s going to bring in a pro-style offense from this century. Rumor has it that Spencer Leno might be the guy?

This is kind of a minor point, but how about they put gold back in the uniforms too? And please, don’t let Rego’s Sporting Goods anywhere near the uniforms. The jerseys look like a 4-year old designed them. I can appreciate fish net when it’s appropriate, but not on a football team.

Doc is hardly a Wake 2.0. He’s patient and a true game teacher. He puts the game in the hands of his smartest kids and he’s not afraid to let the kids execute. Pro style offense? Sure, Doc’ll teach them.

💯 on the Rego’s comment.

No to the gold. I liked Coach Soup’s nod to his Perry days with ISU’s unis this year. Black & white, meat & potatoes, GID.

Has anyone verified Doc applied? Or was asked to apply

Doc is a great dude. Doc is certainly not Wake 2.0, with that said, Doc has no where near the X/O’s knowledge of Wake.

Let me ask, when did Doc have a chance to do the bolded? Are you talking about softball?
Also, when and where did Doc learn how to install a Pro Style Offense? Is that something he picked up from coaching 8th grade football?

This is no knock on the man whatsoever. I just don’t think he’s interested and even if he was, varsity football is quite different than softball.

What even is a "pro style" offense? Do you want them under center with a lot of 5 step drops? Heavy play action? Gap run scheme? How much of that are we seeing at the pro level anymore?

My point is that Doc likely only knows WingT principles as far as installing and running a system. Being that he’s only ever played and coached at Perry.

No way he knows anything other than the wing T. I’ve been saying since this began Perry needs a fresh start. Not another Wakefield. You can find a guy that can speak to the kids the same deliver a similar message and run an offense and defense from the past 3 decades

This is probably true. I am the only one saying this. Of course when I talked about it with family and friends over the holidays in the PTO, they at least patronized me that it was actually a great idea.

I still think it is. If Doc is one of the 38, hire him.

I agree with your sentiment wholeheartedly! I think regardless of W/L’s, Doc would 1000% make a positive impact on the young men’s lives!

Regarding X’s and O’s, I am so out of my depth… but how much does a head coach these days need to know that stuff in totality… it’s why you have a staff. But he’s not dumb… in fact he’s a smart dude and football isn’t rocket science. I’m unconcerned about X’s & O’s. You can throw so much out of the wing t it’s kind of a silly argument to get away from it.

I think where docs secret to success is how masterful he is at placing expectations on kids and that they don’t fear him. Never met a kid worth his/her salt that didn’t absolutely adore him despite the expectations he places on them. I actually think it’s more of the needed skill than identifying the best play for a cover 2.

My opinion on this....your head coach to be successful needs to know as much or as more then his staff...he must delegate but he also has to know when the staff is making a mistake or making the process to difficult for the players...then on top of this has to have a creative ability to make the play work yet to change if the plan is not working...Jeff Durbin could see so much on one pass of the game film...with that ability he was always a step ahead of most assistants and coaches...but then he knew how to make this info work with their input

I don’t disagree, BSO. But I don’t think a lack of varsity level head coaching experience decides that.

For the record, I was shocked at how much Docs teams threw the ball when my nephews played for him.

If Doc isn’t one of them, I’ll lay down my dreams. 😜

… but if he is. The fury of posts of support will be such the likes that yappi has never seen.
What is it with you and this Doc you speak of? If he or any Perry asst coach gets a reach around interview is a complete waste of time, did a little research and the only "Perry" guy that has been a HFBC at Perry is the last guy Slates and you seen how that turned out, so get out of the way and if you want to watch Doc coach I'm sure he'll welcome you at a softball game lol

Read any of the plethora of posts I’ve made about him on this thread Getoboi12.

He’s a leader and he’s a winner. The rest falls into place for me.

I can tell it’s unpopular. I’m not concerned with it being unpopular. I think it’s the right choice. If he’s interested, give him a chance.

Good leaders are rare these days. Ask Coach Wake.

Very true on the uniforms. Whoever is responsible for the jerseys looking the way they do should be banned from the Perry football program. Embarrassing
