Wrap your brain around this one: Bristol vs East Palestine Tournament game

any or all of them can play all the games they want. so what it's not a pretend NBA small school high school game.

the "OHSAA interscholastic competition is the same thing as the NBA or Olympics" is nothing but a huge mirage, deception, false pretense, idiotic overly expensive play pretend and interscholastic competitions should be banned and replaced with true physical education where all the students of a school can be on a pretend NBA basketball team not just play pretend pros. and that has always been my opinion.
its interesting you are on a high school discussion board when you see no value in high school athletics

Boy there's alot of really good sportsmanship going on there eh? I mean seriously folks? EP couldn't see fit that a guest was going to not feel comfortable there for a stinking high school basketball game so you dug your heels in on that? Stories like this really disappoint me in how people behave. Seeing EP in the news on a daily basis, I think it's more than reasonable to move the game to a neutral site, no big deal.

you mischaracterize my position completely. there is a great deal of value in athletics in schools at all levels beginning in kindergarden.

interscholastic athletics reduce the availability of athletic competitions to a wider segment of the student population by adopting a pseudo professional club model. The student population would be much better served by an intramural competition model.

you misstate my position completely as physical education is just as valuable as academic training.

but competitions between schools, tournaments, etc in athletics are essentially just for fun: there is no cash prize award for winning a tournament.

exactly, precisely correct

and what did Bristol win? the right to get beat. And what would they win if they ran the table?

nothing. bragging rights except e palestine could say that they would have beat Bristol but Bristol chickened out LOL

I'd say the other side of that coin - EP feels pretty slighted, pretty screwed over in pretty much all aspects of life right now, and none of it is in their control. Their kids were ordered back to school like business as usual - so yeah, forgive them for wanting to play a home game that was rightfully theirs to play, I'd say they've earned that right especially with everything going on. Just like Bristol had the right to say no.

Ok, understood. But to dig your heels in and refuse to not move the game? What the heck? I guess if you want an easy win. But like I said, I just think this was the worst option available.

Thank you.

The air and water have been tested over and over and over and over again and all the results have come back safe. If Bristol wants to disregard the facts and rely on their feelings instead, that is their decision.

then why are the EP residents all over the news saying they don't feel safe. they now have mysterious coughs, headaches, etc. the gov't has even set up facilities. i'm not saying its not safe, but the residents being interviewed don't feel the same.

Ok, so that may be true, but there are "reasonable" concerns. Why FORCE high school kids and a communty to play a game where they are not comfortable. This is a unique situation and I lay it on EP to just move the game to a neutral location. To me it's just silliness.

I never said it was safe - all I said was I feel empathy for the residents and students of EP. If I lived there, I would not want to be there, or drink that water. The government and the EPA have downplayed/covered up/outright lied about things like this in the past. The air quality at ground zero after 9/11 was fine also according to the EPA. The reality is, those residents and students don't have much choice in the matter. They definitely feel they've been dealt a raw deal, so they dug their heels in about playing their entitled home game. The problem is, they have the government testing to back their argument, but most people (including EP residents) don't trust the government testing and don't believe it's safe.

Again I see both sides of it. I totally understand Bristol not wanting to play there and I totally understand why EP insisted on it. None of it matters ultimately because neither team was going far, but imagine if EP had title expectations......

The other interesting side of this, and another argument for moving the game......what if this happened in a community that was hosting district or regional boys games? You think OSHAA would move the site for those games?! You bet your sweet @$$ they would. So why not force the move for the girls game?

The title that means nothing expectations, and is all just for fun in the first place?

Part of it is because the national media has gone to the extreme in playing fast and loose with the facts, many taken completely out of context, and has scared some residents, and those are the residents who get interviewed. And there are always a tiny handful of people looking for a payday as well.

The government HAS set up facilities, there is even an on-site medical facility run by the Ohio dept of health and the county dept of health. So again, why post false information ??

It is not just the Ohio EPA and an independent contractor testing the water; EP has a municipal water supply and as such testing is a continuous periodic process, done by locals themselves. Do you think locals are going to knowingly drink and distribute water to the town that is not safe, especially when all the eyes of the nation are upon them? Do you think locals are going to fudge test data?

Obviously it is a difficult situation, but the locals have done an admirable job, neighboring towns have helped immensely, the county ema has been very helpful, and the state has done its job. Yes, a lot of remediation and further monitoring is in order, but my goodness the misinformation spewed is somewhat out of control.

I totally understand where you're coming from, and I share the same stance on the reporting. The media is at fault, but the social media stuff is what puts this sort of thing spiraling out of control.

That said, the derailment happened 21 days ago - 115,000 gallons of vinyl chloride spilled or was burned when this happened. There is no test or specialist in this world that would make me believe everything is just "A-Okay" 21 days later after 115,000 gallons of a toxic chemical was released into the air and ground. Throw the science out the window - this is just common sense. Seriously though, you can't possible think that everything is just normal 21 days later after that much toxic chemicals are spilled or burned. Right?

I agree. If a school wasn’t comfortable, EP should’ve respected that. The fact that the school wouldn’t is the factor to me.
So if a all white rural school, doesn't feel safe going to the innercity to play, the game should be moved?

Sometimes we have to face our fears and rely on sources who know more than our anxiety wants to tell us about a situation.
