What is the most disappointing season that your team has ever had? Early playoff exit? Disappointing W/L results?

So I was doing some digging and saw that there was a thread on the BEST season your school ever had, but I didn’t see one about the most disappointing season.

So, what was your teams most disappointing season in your opinion?

First 3 years of the program
2016 3-7
2017 3-7
2018 3-7

2020 went 6-0, then got upset in the 2nd round of the playoffs in a monsoon. Finished the year 7-1

For Tipp it has to be this previous season in 2024. Go a perfect 10-0 including beating a 9-0 Xenia in week 10 and beating a Bellbrook team week 1 who went on to play in the Regional Final, just to lose to St. Mary’s on a last second field goal in the second round. Also breaking their 30 game winning streak at home. I feel a lot of people expected Tipp to atleast make the regional final last year.

While Covid alone ruined this year, being robbed of that LS/Hoban State final hurts…

At least the Elder game was epic! 2 OT thriller that year I think?
While my Tigers got their butts whipped bad not so sure why you think Hoban vs LaSalle would of been a better game since Massillon did beat LaSalle

Not claiming it would have been a better game. Just saying it would've been nice to see La Salle and Hoban in a state finals. Two powerhouse private D2 schools who are long overdue for a state title matchup or matchup at all. No disrespect to Massillon at all

For the Tigers two of the most disappointing have to be 1999 and 2000. In 1999 the Tigers went undefeated just to lose to Perry in round one of the playoffs at home after just defeating Perry handily a few weeks prior. In 2000 the Tigers lost as heavy favorites to Marion Harding in round one of the playoffs at home after a long touchdown run by Justin Zwick with time expiring was called back for holding. The thing that didn't sit well with Tiger fans was the flag was thrown 40 yards behind Zwick and not till he was crossing the endzone for the win. I'll add another, 2002 Tigers vs Warren Harding State semis. While not at all a upset like the other two still very disappointing losing for a second time that year to Warren and this one in Overtime with a trip to the D1 championship on the line. IMO this was one of the best if not the best Tiger teams in the last 50 years and had the best chance to claim the First playoffs state title over many other Tiger teams.

I understand, I didn't even realize if they have met in the finals or not. Have they met in the finals before?

Played at Convoy Crestview. Freshman year we were 2-8, sophomore year with new coach we were 5-5. I would say we were a good 5-5 based on the previous 3 years only winning a total of 5 games. Had lost to a 9-3 Ada by only 1 pt in double OT, should have won, but I digress.

Junior year we also went 5-5, but I classify it as a disappointing 5-5 because we lost 3 games by 4, 5, and 5 points. Included in that is another loss to a 10-2 Ada, which was by 5.

Senior year was redeemed at 9-3.

I know 5-5 is not disappointing for many schools, but you have to understand Convoy Crestview’s past with football. It is a basketball school through and through and football was dropped back in the early 80s.

For Avon there are a few that come to mind.

1986, first year of the newly formed Lorain County Conference, Avon at Lorain Clearview in Week 10, both unbeaten with the winner getting the conference title and a playoff berth while the loser turns in the equipment. Avon led early, but Clearview came back to win in double OT.

1996, Avon goes unbeaten and makes the playoff for the first time. Lost the D5 state semi by a TD to Marion Pleasant, who went on to end Versailles long win streak in dominant fashion to win the state title.

2004, Avon loses star RB Bobby LaRosa on the last play of the last practice before facing Coldwater in the playoffs. On top of that, several starters got injured and suspended before the game, so Avon had to go in severely undermanned and got beat up by Ross Homan and his Cavaliers, who would’ve been favored anyway.

2008, Avon loses in the regional final to Big Walnut in the D3 playoffs. Aurora, who Avon had beaten at Aurora in Week 1, wins the state title.

2011, Avon loses to a stacked Trotwood-Madison team in the D2 state final. No shame in it it. Just that losing a state final is a bad feeling.

2016, Avon enters the D2 playoffs unbeaten and ranked #1 by the AP. 8th seeded Avon Lake, who Avon had beaten earlier in the season, stuns Avon in a first round playoff game at Avon.

2023, Avon has Hoban in check for most of the state semi despite not having starting QB Nolan Good for the game. Hoban eventually wears down Avon and wins a tight one to hand Avon its fifth straight playoff loss to the Hoban machine.

Wow that is crazy I always thought they would have through the years.
Yep, La Salle v Hoban is a matchup that has never happened, even though there was a stretch of 7 years where the two teams won 9 state titles (7 D2, 2 D3).

So the 2020 disappointment was in no way meant as disrespectful to Massillon, who won fair and square, just a missed opportunity to see a long-awaited match up that never took place.

I didnt take it as disrespect at all just never knew they haven't met in a final before. They have never met at all before???

Brush has been poor in football historically, but 2018 and 2020 stick out to me as disappointing years. 2018 we were basically a failed two point conversion away from not only beating Mayfield in their own house for the first time since the 80's, but making the playoffs. 2020 was weird for everyone and I don't think that Brush team was very good, but we got smacked by a not particularly great Twinsburg team in our own building which was extremely embarrassing.

2003...

My school went 9-1. Undefeated, hosting in Week 9. Gave up a TD with less than a minute to go.

Week 10...beat the other (third) title contender at home. Finished in a 3-way tie for the league title. It was our 1st league title in 48 years.

Hosted the first game of the playoffs. Turned the ball over 4 times, including on a muffed punt in the 2nd half. Scored the potential game-tying TD (and what possibly would have been the tying 2-point conversion) about halfway through the 4th quarter, except that it was called back for a block in the back.

I think your Senior year at Grove was what jump started Grove's run to the Semi-Finals. Grove scored on the first play of the game if I remember correctly.

That 2008 game against Big Walnut, we walked to the stadium backwards. Weather was brutal for that one. 2010 getting upset by Sandusky stands out. Turnovers got them in that one.

Yes. Unfortunately, the strength of that 2008 team was the great air attack, but the weather definitely played to Big Walnut’s strength, their defense, that snowy night in Ashland.

The 2010 Sandusky loss was extremely disappointing, but it propelled that group to the state championship game the next season, so it at least served a purpose.

Shelby's 2019 season was interesting. 8-4. Co-League champs. A lot of good pieces, and one year behind a team that went 9-1 during the covid year, losing to state champ Van Wert.

In 2019, Shelby played Big Walnut in Week 3. They last met in 2007 in the playoffs when Big Walnut won state, but now it was a below average D2 school vs a good D4 school. Big Walnut won. Disappointing.

Weeks 7 & 8, Shelby lost back-to-back home games to Galion (13-12) and Lima CC. The Galion game was a myriad of bad execution and player inexperience to lose in the final moments. I felt the next week against a good D6 team would result in a win, and Shelby gave up 55 points.

The big one was the Regional Semis against Clyde. Shelby had lost to Clyde my senior year in the playoffs in 2010. Shelby was in their first year in the MOAC, and there was some hope that our record wasn't padded by a weaker league while the new look SBC wasn't as terrifying as advertised.

Very notably, the week leading up to the Clyde game, Shelby had made semi-national news due to a rabid raccoon. We don't have an animal control department. The raccoon was staggering around in broad daylight on a street in the middle of town. The cop made the decision (the correct one in my mind) to not discharge his weapon in a residential area to dispose of the critter, so he took his cruiser and ran it over........but it was merely dinged. Someone was filming it, and the poor fella was seizing up in a great display of animal cruelty. The cop managed to send it to the rainbow bridge on his 2nd attempt. A quote from the Chief: "The video was disturbing to watch. I could even say it shocks the conscience." I recall the Kansas City Star newspaper picked up the story.

Needless to say, the town was in a hysteric state. Surely a win over Clyde would soothe the mood?

At halftime, it was 21-7 Shelby. My friends and I went for a refill at the nearest bar, and we ran into the Head Coach's brother, and it was the coach's first year in Shelby. Positivity was abound. All categories of bravado were expressed. A lot of cheers were had about how we were getting revenge on Clyde for the 2010 season. The Tiffin locals seemed sympathetic towards their former Northern Ohio League brethren rejoicing, but perhaps we were too engrossed in our libations to read the room.

Clyde outscored Shelby 28-0 in the second half. Clyde won state that year as an #8 seed. They won their last two games 35-14 and 42-14. Ricky Raccoon died for nothing.

Maple Heights in 2011, the year after the Mustangs won it all. Someone decided that its first-round game should be played at Bedford, and Shaw came in and stunned Maple 22-12. The Mustangs never led against a team that couldn't score on them at old Stafford Field.

Negatory. I graduated in 2014.

2013/14 Grove was 2-8 - which is uncharacteristic for them
2014/15 was Grove’s semi final run

In 2013 in the Grove at Crestview, there was back to back kickoff returns for touchdowns.

We did beat Grove 2 years in a row! The only other Crestview team to do that was in 2016 and 2017!

In 2013 Licking Valley was a #1 seed in the D4 playoffs and lost to Steubenville 21-14 in a game in which we could have won Steubenville was a #8 seed with a 6-4 record guess a team like Steubenville can still beat you no matter what .
