Glenville Upsets the Eagles

The Glenville Tarblooders traveled to Baldwin Wallace University to take on the St. Edward Eagles on this past Thursday night. While both teams are coming off the previous season hoisting a trophy in Canton, both teams came into this primetime matchup teetering above a .500 record, at 3-2. Despite the game being within a score's reach, the Tarblooders never gave up the lead, fighting to the final seconds to pull off the upset over the Eagles and winning 28-27.

Glenville Junior running back C.J. Newell Jr. was on fire under the lights of Finnie Stadium, accounting for 39 carries, 203 yards, and two touchdowns, but he wasn’t the only player to step up on the Glenville side of the ball. Sophomore quarterback LaMarques Greenwood stepped in after the starting quarterback, Arvell Nelson Jr., left the game during the second quarter with an injury. Greenwood led the offensive to victory accounting for the last two touchdowns scored by the Tarblooders.

The offense handled their business, as did their defensive unit. It was led by highly-recruited linebacker Cincere Johnson, who had 13 tackles, five for a loss. The Glenville defense had two key stops late in the fourth quarter, one on the 2-point conversion that would’ve given St. Edward the lead, but the Tarblooders stuffed the rush attempt, making the Eagles trail by one point. The other major stop was the end zone interception by the junior cornerback Aaron Scales, which sealed the game, fending off the last efforts from the Eagles.

Upper Arlington Avenges 2023 Regional Final Loss

Last year, the Hilliard Bradley Jaguars won the regional championship in double-overtime over the Upper Arlington Golden Bears. The rematch was coming into week six as both teams, while having graduated big pieces of their team last year, hope to battle their way back to playoff football coming into the game. Unfortunately for Bradley, the Upper Arlington defense didn’t allow a single point while they were on the field, making this the 3rd shutout in a row for the Golden Bears, as they won 42-0.

Mentor Moves to 6-0

Division 1 Region 1 frontrunner, the Mentor Cardinals, took care of business on a cloudy afternoon against River Rouge out of Michigan, winning 47-21.

Led by one of the top quarterback-to-receiver duos, Scotty Fox and Justen Hodge, the Cardinals soared to a quick 27-7 lead by the half, then coasted to a victory to make it six straight wins this season.

Mentor junior wide receiver Justen Hodge was electric in this game, going for 81 yards and two touchdowns on the day. While he was receiving passes from West Virginia commit Scotty Fox, junior running back Dominic Burns took 13 carries for 87 yards and accounted for two touchdowns of his own.

Hamilton Upsets Princeton Big

Coming off four straight wins, the Princeton Vikings came into week 6 with hopes to keep the fire burning they have built this season, playing Hamilton who they have not been defeated by since 2016. This year, things were very different from years in the past. Hamilton blanked Princeton at home with a score of 34-0, winning their first bout since that 2016 victory.

The Big Blue were led by senior running back Grancen Goldsmith, who rushed 25 carries for 166 yards and three touchdowns on the night, scoring over half of the points for Hamilton by himself.

The defense also was on fire, holding the Princeton offense, who averaged 30.2 points per game, to zero points. This is the third opponent in consecutive weeks that the Big Blue has held to a score of 7 or fewer. Kansas State defensive back Noah King picked up his first interception of this season, while also accounting for three total tackles on the night.

Kicking off the week at Tipp City Park Stadium, the Tippecanoe Red Devils put on a show against a familiar MVL opponent in Butler. The Red Devils defeated the Aviators 25-7, scoring at least 25 points in every game this season as they improved to 6-0 for the first time since the 2013 season.

The Tippecanoe offense is led by senior standout Larkin Thomas at quarterback, who threw for 229 yards, 2 touchdowns, and rushed for an additional 66 yards to move the offense down the field. Those two touchdown passes went to senior wide receiver Jackson Davis, who has had a phenomenal year with 33 receptions for 517 yards and 10 touchdowns.
