Somber moments were mixed with festive ones Friday night as a new football season began at Conway Memorial Stadium at Walsh Jesuit High School.
Opening nights are often full of good cheer, and this one was at times, even through a lengthy rain delay resulted in the game being called, with the Warriors defeating Newark Licking Valley 21-0.
But it was sad and unlike any other opener in school history because Bill Ricco, who had been a Warrior for 44 years in various capacities, died of natural causes Thursday at Akron General Medical Center. He was 77.
