URSULINE & MOONEY PROJECTIONS/DISCUSSIONS 2024

I had family in Sharon and they did pronounce it Fur-ll. That Western PA accent is in Youngstown, too., all the way down to Steubenville. Although I am gone from the Valley nearly 50 years now, when I am really tired I slip into it. Actually I was thinking of DC Farrell vs. the blue & gold Steelers.
DCs last name is spelled Ferrell. That's what I meant when I said "Farrell" threw me off in the post. Farrell, Ferrell, feral, fair-ell, fur-ll......too many to choose from. Lol

It’s startin to smell like football!
Yes it is. A vast majority of the team is currently on a camp trip, Toledo yesterday, Notre Dame today, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa St on tap with stops at either Missouri or Iowa and Cincinnati too. Its a great team building experience that the kids love. It won't be long now. Week 1 is right around the corner.

I thought taylor was extremely talented last year as a sophomore. I can only imagine what he's going to be these next two years. I know the offense is always run heavy but when you have someone as talented as he is, he should be targeted at least ten times a game imo.

He has gotten bigger too. He is about 6'2" now and has really filled out. He is going to be really special when it is all said and done.

How is the Oline looking? I know the Bowser kid is getting a ton of looks, but who are the others expected to contribute?

The two tackles return. The interior will be young. A couple of sophomores will most likely start. They will be inexperienced but talented. All the upcoming soph linemen have grown a lot as well. They are all 6'-6'2" & 240-275 now.

Happy Fathers Day!

Anybody have 7 on 7 info for Mooney and Ursuline? I know Ursuline did a lot of college camp tours in June, but was wondering if they did any in Ohio for July.

Last year Ursuline competed in, and won, the Canton McKinley tournament. Im not sure if they are doing it this year or not yet.

Strudders 'Cats. Urslynn Irish. Easss Golden Bears. Nourt Bulldogs. Rain Tigers. Soout Warriors. Camel Red Devils. Warn Harding. Ausen-town Falcons. Low-ville Rockets. Shern Tigers. When we want someone to lend us something we ask, "Can I burrow that?" And when there's company coming we "red-it-up." Moving to SW Ohio people would ask me what part of the country I came from because, "You couldn't be from Ohio!"

I remember meeting a guy in basic training 40 years ago and I asked him where was he from. His answer? " Ohi-er" I believe he was from deep Southern Ohio below Chilicothe by the Kentucky border

Some are rating the Walsh-Ursuline match up as the very best opener statewide (or certainly it's in the top 5). The Irish & Cards have a history of opening tough going way back. In my ancient days at UHS ('60s & '70s) we consistently took on Pennsylvania powers in game #1 vs. Butler, Pittsburgh Penn Hills, and then two visits to New Castle. These were traditionally PA powers back in the day. I know that Butler team finished 9-1 with its only loss to the Irish (at Campbell) . A 6-0 win over Penn Hills (at Boardman) the next season turned out to have been an upset win for the green & gold. Tom Carey was a New Castle native and sought to play against his alma mater for some time and finally found mutual dates. Ursuline upped their game a couple years later with three openers in a row at Massillon. This has held true in recent years --- openers were hardly breathers. Although it was never the opener, in '61 the Youngstown Holy War was game #2. Eventually THE game was cemented to week 6 and held that way until our Cards & Irish joined the SVC and rotated as they had in their mutual early City Series days.

That 1961 Holy War was the season opener for Mooney. It was also Denny Barrett's first game as HC of the Cardinals. The week after the CS Preview Mooney had an open date while the Irish played Canton CC in week one.

Wow it's hard to imagine THE game being the opener. The Holy War was usually mid-season after that, weeks 5 or 6 until they joined the SVC and followed that conference's rotation. When did the archrivals start playing in late season on a regular basis (weeks 9 or 10)? In the early days week 10 was in November and the city fields (South & Rayen) were usually mud bowels, with even YSU playing at Rayen. The final game of the season for Ursuline in both '67 and '68 were in a sea of mud resulting in surprising/upsetting ties with East (8-8) and Struthers (6-6). The Struthers game was actually in week 11 which was an option in those days if a school needed a bye. That East game was in a torrential rain that didn't stop. The gales of November? One year we played St. Joe in Euclid right up against Lake Erie in week 9 and I was never so cold in my life with that wind whipping up from the lake which was right behind the visitor stands.

How was the college tour for Ursuline the last few weeks? Anyone receive any big offers? Did any QB stick out??
It went well. WR Taylor picked up offers from Indiana and Toledo. The Irish had 5 kids make the top 5 at their positions at the Notre Dame camp. Ferrell has looked really good at QB and picked up his first D1 offer last week. The freshman QB looks good as well.

The first year they played in week 10 was 1984. I don't remember anything about that game. :)

I think the following is correct:

They played in week 10 in 1990 and then from 1993-95. They played again in week 11 in 90 & 95 in the 1st round of the playoffs. Played in week 9 in 1960, 75, 87 & 88, 98 & 99, 2002-19 and scheduled for week 9 in 2020 but Covid changed things. They played in the last regular season game that year. Played in week 10 from 2021-23 and scheduled for week 10 this year.

Although it was not the first game of the year, I seem to recall the Holy War in 1989 was the second week of the school year. It was a thousand degrees in the Irish gym for the rally as it was essentially still summer. The good guys prevailed 20-14.
