Ursuline & Cardinal Mooney prospects for 2025

Why is it that the great programs are so heavily bashed on here. Is there REALLY anyone on this site that doesn’t think Ursuline is a great program? If you can’t acknowledge they are an elite program you don’t know Ohio hs football. You dont have to like them to respect them. I’d say the same about Chardon…. Great program and deserves respect

I would really love to see Harding in this conversation. Now that East and Chaney combined, what do you think DII or DI? Should be a powerhouse with athletes.

Every school with open enrollment is the same. There’s no difference between a private school and an open enrollment school. Mahoning Valley has a lot of these schools. Ursuline’s schedule is all open enrollment opponents, except maybe Farrell, Pa.
It’s rare that a school isn’t open enrollment anymore. Money from the state is a driving force forsure.

What? Open enrollment schools have a district of students that are enrolled in the school, regardless if they are stud athletes or chess playing emo kids. Private schools get to pick and choose their enrollment. They are not the same. However, open enrollment has evened the playing field, on the field. Regardless of private/open/closed/ whatever, it still takes great coaching with those talented kids to be a championship team, which clearly Ursuline has across the board (football at least). I still hate Ursuline with a burning passion, but that of course is a story for another day

Ursuline and Mooney take Catholic feeder school kids first, in similar fashion, regardless if they are athletes, speech & debate or just academics. Just like in public open enrollment schools there are limits to the number of students in their respective schools/buildings. I however will not argue that if a really good athlete applies to Ursuline or Mooney they’re getting in. However the same could be said for open enrollment schools, if a really good basketball or football kid applies they’re getting in.

Let go of the hatred in your soul. We are all about love here on the North Side. 💛💚 ☘️

Outside of the COVID years, I believe its been 59 years since the Irish had a 9 game regular season schedule. The teams and results were very different that year:
URSULINE '66
@ Canton Central Catholic 6-15 L
@ Youngstown South 8-16 L
Youngstown Chaney @ South 12-10 W
Youngstown North @ Rayen 50-0 W
Cardinal Mooney @ Rayen 20-26 L
@ Youngstown Rayen 28-8 W
Youngstown East @ Rayen 16-0 W
Woodrow Wilson @ Rayen 20-0 W
Warren JFK @ Warren 26-0 W
Won 6 lost 3

Mooney & Chaney shared City Series honors that year.
For several years in the mid '60s the pattern was Chaney beats Mooney, Mooney beats Ursuline, Ursuline beats Chaney.

2009 we had only 9 Games, 6-3 regular season capped off with the state title.

Javing an open/bye week isn't a bad thing, especially in the current playoff format. 16 games is a l9ng season if you make it to the title game. A week break, even early, could be beneficial. Im sure there will be a green & gold scrimmage in the bye week, which will be more competitive then a lot of the games that could of possibly been scheduled. I will say though that we reached out to a lot of schools with no takers, including teams from all surrounding states.

With Chaney soon to close and SVSM and Fitch about to jump ship, Ursuline is destined to have difficulty scheduling except maybe the likes of Hoban, Steubenville, Massillon, Watterson, Toledo CC, Walsh... dare we take on the biggest big boys such as Ignatius & St. Edward?

Watterson, Hartley, Desales, Walsh and us have all entered into a scheduling agreement. Harding will continue to play us, along with Mooney. The Chaney/East combined school will probably be D2 so I could see them playing us. That would only leave 3 games to schedule, which is pretty normal.

Maybe Iggy at this time? Schedule is plenty challenging as it is.

In 2011, Chaney became a "visual & performing arts school," so their athletic programs went on a nearly decade-long hiatus with all of the YCS athletes playing for East. Just as the Bears' football program began to get their feet underneath them in 2018, they brought the Cowboys back in 2019. That took 8 years and even then, I wouldn't exactly say that they were at a "powerhouse" level.

With Reardon's current hot streak at Ursuline & the facilities expanding at both Fitch & Harding, expecting a "football powerhouse" to emerge from Bennington Ave. is asking a lot. If anything, their track & field program (boys & girls) may really break through.

Just wait until the forthcoming facilities are completed at Ursuline. Youngstown public school will struggle to ever get back to respectability on the football field.

Are they building any other facilities on top of the auxiliary building? (which I think should be turfed inside and not basketball courts IMO)

Hope they turf the old practice field as well. Im excited to see when they will release pictures of what it will be like more in detail.

Dis UHS get the green light to move forward from West Wood Street?

What is happening at West Wood street? I'm not too in the loop.
The Chancery Office for the Diocese of Youngstown is at 144 West Wood Street next to Saint Columba Cathedral downtown. The bishop's office is there as well as the Youngstown Diocese Department of Education.

Ursuline has gone public with the timeline and fundraising, so I’m going to hope they aren’t going rogue lol. Estimated to finish in 2027 with land clearing to begin this summer.
If my memory serves me right Cardinal Mooney couldn't relocate to Canfield several years ago because they didn't have the money "up front." I can't imagine that the major building project proposed at Ursuline would be any different, unless Bishop Bonner has a different policy going forward than Bishop Murry did. I know that the current bishop has said that Ursuline is the most solvent high school of the six in the Diocese of Youngstown.

I was told otherwise, but it was based on the bishop saying no for another reason. Not moving probably put the nail in the coffin for Mooney.
