UA, St. X, & St.F

It is unfortunate that St. Francis will not be swimming this weekend. With all of the changes that are happening since he took over, Coach Kurth felt it would better serve the swimmers to not attend that meet, nor the St. Charles invite last weekend. Both UA and St. X are coming to St. Francis in a couple of weeks for meets though.

Those meets should prove very interesting. Presumably also these teams will swim the Big 8. Looking at X's performance at the St. Charles Showdown. they don't look to be as deep as in recent years. Of course they didn't have everyone at the St. Charles meet. UA also is not as deep as last year. They lost some talented seniors. It looks like they have at least 2 promising freshman, but neither will likely help them at the state meet. StF remains a mystery. They lost some top swimmers, and although they had young talent it's to early to tell how they have developed. Still with the possible addition of Centerville these look to be the top teams in the state meet.

St. Francis will not swim in the Big 8. As of now the teams going to the Big 8 are:

St. X
Centerville
Dayton Oakwood
University
Beavercreek
UA
Moeller

On the girls side it is:
UA
Cincinnati Ursuline
Beavercreek
Centerville
Dayton Oakwood
Bishop Watterson

Still the same format. Each team enters 2 swimmers or relays per event. There may be an effort made to add 2 more girl's teams and 1 more boy's team. Even without a full complement this will be a great meet.

Everyone associated with St. Francis would agree that this year's team is a mystery. Coach Kurth has been working them very differently and much more intense than under Coach Kennedy. His philosophy is to not spend too much time on meets and more time in practice. It will be interesting to see how tired the St. Francis swimmers are at next week's Knight Invite and the following week with UA and St. X. There is a lot of talent in the sophomore and junior class. How they respond to Coach Kurth's training is the mystery as you call it. We may not know much until February.

"We may not know much until February"

Exactly! Expecting the state championship swimmers to practice incredibly hard up until just right before districts and then tapering for Canton. Who steps for their school and team is always interesting and inspiring to watch.

Bombers have a strong senior class this year. Expecting a great battle with the Knights, the Bears, and the other top schools in Canton.

The mighty St. X comes to Toledo this Thursday evening and then UA comes to town on Saturday afternoon. The St. Francis swimmers performed pretty good at their Knight Invitational this past weekend. They are extremely tired, but put out the fastest time in the 200 free relay so far this year. They were not tapered, shaved, or wearing caps. These two meets should be very exciting.

You are right, these should be two outstanding dual meets. But I wouldn't expect the StX meet to be close. After seeing X's times in the Big 8 & the Canton Invite, it doesn't look like anyone will challenge them. I would expect them to bring the A team to Toledo. Judging from the Big 8 times, with due respect to StF, Dayton Oakwood looks to be the second best team in the state. Should be interesting to see how they do at the Southwest Classic next month. Anyway good luck to the Knights. They face 2 competitive meets this week. The UA meet will be closer. There StF depth will offset the UA seniors.

Not expecting the score to be that close. St. X is bringing about half their team, which is still almost twice as many swimmers as we have. Every year we can compete with them in each event with one or maybe two swimmers, but we cannot match their depth. Their senior class is very strong, as is UA's senior class; we have five senior swimmers. This year, we will see if our junior and sophomore swimmers can compete with them. If so, then next year might be the year for St. Francis to compete for a state title.

It will just be very exciting that these teams will be swimming against each other and not avoiding a meet of this caliber.

Yes, St. X came in like usual-they brought half their team, which is more than ours and swam like they do-fast. They are untouchable in a dual meet due to their depth. Their senior class is very strong, and will lead them to another championship. St. Francis swimmers are beyond exhausted. This weekend's meet against UA will be much more competitive, and will give a glimpse of who might be able to finish as the runner-up this year.

UA will win easily on Saturday. As to the question who will be the runner-up this year, it will either be St. Xavier or UA. It's a two team battle.

The meet this Saturday does not mean anything really. All that matters is what happens in February. If the St. Francis swimmers hit their taper with Coach Kurth in February, then they have a great chance at the second spot. No one has a chance to beat St. X-NO ONE!!!

Like the praise for the Bombers, glad they ventured north again to swim against the great Knight team and swam well. Been looking for the results to see the times, just not found yet.

A lot of swimming still left, and the guys just starting the grueling Xmas training.

The UA meet will be closer. There StF depth will offset the UA seniors.

Boy you called that aquacard. UA took 6 of the 9 individual events and 1 of the 2 relays but lost 162 to 152. As expected times were not terribly fast...both teams are clearly tired, but a great win for the Knights. UA has top end talent, but there is a significant fall off from there. They're a team built for championship meets but they will struggle in lesser meets. You can see the fall off in their Big 8 results.

I tried to post the results for all to see, but I am not sure why it did not work. St. Francis won the 50 and 100 free in both meets, they won the medley and 200 free against UA. As X had more swimmers placing against F, F had more swimmers placing against UA. St. Francis was without one of their top swimmers (50/100 free swimmer) for each meet. Still come to the same conclusion, St. Francis and UA will be fighting for 2nd place. X is the champion.

Times are reflective of 2 very tired teams.

Thanks for posting the results. I was going to try again after Christmas. If anyone wants the specific results/times for the St. Francis/ UA meet, just ask and I will post those. The times are slower than expected, but these swimmers are very tired and the pool is not fast at St. Francis.

St. Francis has received more bad news. A senior sprinter, who has made it to the state meet as a sophomore and junior, has suffered a season ending shoulder injury. It started during water polo season and is causing too much pain that it requires surgery now instead of after the season. Needless to say, all family members and the St. Francis swim family are pretty devastated, but all expect a full recovery with no limitations for the future. He is a wonderful young man and has a very bright future ahead of him, wherever he decides to attend college. He will be an assest to any collegiate swim team.

Sorry about the injury to this fine young man and the bad news. You always hope to have everyone healthy at the state meet and you never know what can happen. I hope he inspires his teammates to swim their best at state and that he has a great college swimming career.
