Tough League

DuPage Valley Conference (western suburbs of Chicago).

Eight teams.

Wheaton Warrenville-South won it, is defending 8A Champion, and is playing this weekend for the 7A championship (welcome to the Illinois playoff system).

Naperville North finished second, Glenbard North finished fourth, and they are playing each other this weekend for the 8A championship (more Illinois fun).

Naperville Central (third) and Wheaton North (fifth) both got knocked off in the playoffs (8A and 7A, respectively).

Wheaton Warrenville-South is undefeated (as they were last year), and just went to fourth in CalPreps.

Naperville North has lost only to Wheaton Warrenville-South, 42-41 in three overtimes (I was out of town that weekend, or I would have gone).

I believe it's a whole new gang for WWS. I think they had four starters back from last year.

Yes, Glenbard North, 4th in the DVC, knocked off Mt. Carmel (CCL Blue champions, 12-0 going in, 5th or so CalPreps, 2006 8A runner-up) 28-21 in the 8A semifinals last week.

Other than that, no, as far as I can tell.

And MC became the 2006 8A runner-up by losing to WWS 44-21.

Thank you for asking.

And there's no need to congratulate me; it's not my league.

WWS knocked off St. Rita 26-22 in the 7A second round.

As long as we're using CalPreps, WWS is 4th this week and Naperville North is 21st. Glenbard North is 162nd, for what it's worth (just find Moeller and look 15 spots higher).

No problem.

I just thought it was something some people on the board might be interested in.

There may be better leagues (and there are a lot of ways to try to measure that), and most playoff systems don't allow a league to have three state finalists, but I think doing what they did is worth noting.

In 95, Texas had two stats champions fromt he same district, Converse Judson/SA Roosevelt. May have happened another time, But I can't think of it now.

You'd think that the UIL would have realized at that time, it was stupid, but now we have four teams from each district making the playoffs.

I took last year's final 16 from D1 and final 16 from D2, resorted them based on enrollment, and played them out using CalPreps.

Westfield won D1 and SLC won D2.

Cedar Hill lost to SLC in the round of 16.

For whatever that's worth (and it may not be worth much, if anything).

By the way, in the 4th quarter of the 8A game, Naperville North had a big lead when Glenbard North scored a touchdown to make it 34-12 with 3:00 minutes left.

Then Glenbard North tried an onsides kick, and Naperville North returned it for a touchdown.

So Naperville North kicked deep, and Glenbard North returned it for a touchdown.

So Glenbard North tried an onsides kick, and Naperville North returned it for a touchdown.

It ended up 46-19.

I thought some of you might find that interesting, and I forgot to mention it last week (all of the games were on TV, by the way).
