The Official 2024 Reds season thread

Didn't know that on Arrenodo, saw an X post that made it appear he was done in St. Louie. I know I was previously ok with putting CES at first, but I think you could at least talk to Goldschmidt and see what it would take. He's not the PG of 3-4 years ago, but in GABP he may be revitalized a little. Just a thought. Plus I think we need some veteran leadership as well.
His numbers have plummeted the past 2 years. He’s going down the path that late-stage Votto was going down.

so 13 games under .500. Not great, but you omitted the 4 top seeds: Dodgers, Phillies, Yankees and Guardians.

Reds were somehow 4-2 vs Dodgers, 4-3 vs. Phillies, 3-0 vs. Yankees and 1-3 vs. Guardians. 4 games over .500 against the best 4 teams.

Total 9 games under .500 vs. playoff teams, and 1 game over .500 against the non-playoff teams. The very definition of so-so.

Yes, not so great against this round of teams, but oddly good against those who got byes. That's baseball.

All things being equal, the month of May is what cooked this team. 9-18 and it just seems like the hill could never be climbed from there. 12-17 in August also didn't help.

Here is who WON'T be your next manager. No real surprises. I never felt Larkin was a real candidate. I just don't see him wanting to do it. Ross, Schumacher, Venable still on the list apparently. I also cannot imagine Freddie Benevides having any kind of shot at it either, we need some new blood.

My best guess is Krall probably approached Bell about mapping out a move to another role in the organization, and Bell in response probably told him to just go ahead and fire him if that was the plan. After all, we know the Castellinis don’t want to pay people to not work — even though they’ve had to with Moustakas, Akiyama, Myers, etc. because Krall is incompetent at his job.
Then why didn't they just come out and say "we're gonna move Bell to another position in the organization..." instead of firing him?

The front office better get to the bottom of why the team turns nearly every early-afternoon game into a sad-sack slumber party. Are guys out partying late? Do guys need their eyes checked if they can’t hit in the sun? Is it just total lethargy and laziness due to a total lack of managerial and player leadership?

It’s more than just a coincidence at this point why this team is relatively good at night and absolutely atrocious in early afternoon games.
It has everything to do with coaching.

Ok, and it's not a dream scenario, I said "kicking the tires". My thought was that possibly the market has shrunk up on them and you could get them for less than what they make now. We are not necessarily married to our corner infielders. It was just a thought.
Then why not keep Ty France?

If Bell didn’t want to go along with that. Same as if my employer wanted to transfer me to janitorial work, I’d say “I’m staying in my role or else you’re gonna have to fire me.”

Bally Sports announced in court that it will not carry Reds games any longer.
I thought Amazon rode in on a white horse to save the day, and acquired a chunk of Diamond Sports / Bally, with the intent to show regional sports network content on Prime? I can't find any updates on that story from 6 months ago, did that deal get squashed?

I’m not 100% sure what happened there. I remember at that time, one of the holdups was that Bally only owned streaming rights for five teams — the Reds were not one of the five — so Amazon would’ve separately had to come to terms with other clubs in order to stream their games.

In any event, it sounds like Bally will be down to only the Braves unless other teams are desperate enough to re-negotiate lesser rights fees with Bally.

It would be helpful if subscription data related to the Padres and D-Backs were publicly known since their games have been broadcast directly by MLB all season.

Adding a tier to MLB.tv for your local team is one option if these teams can’t come to an agreement with an outside broadcaster.

Then why not keep Ty France?
I'd only keep Ty France if he comes back on a very team friendly deal, and where are you going to play him? You've already got CES and Candelario who play first, Steer can play first too. It's a numbers game. The Reds already have Candelario signed, unless you trade him, he's on the team. I can't imagine you give up on CES already.

So since it's a subject, for those of us with cable, how do we watch the Reds in 2025?
My gut feeling is you will not need cable TV to watch the Reds anymore. Some type of arrangement where a limited number of games are on local channels while the vast majority of games are streaming-only, requiring an MLBtv subscription, would not shock me.

But it remains to be seen.

Hope you enjoyed that 1 hour, 48 minute trunk-slammer of a 4-hit shutout while the rest of us have moved on with football and the future.
But the Reds are sooooo close at contending. Iff 100% of the players are healthy, have HoF seasons...they draft perfectly and top players come to cincy on team friendly all deals then they may make the WC next yr.

Soooo clooose

How about Petey Rose as manager?

It’d put butts in the seats.
I'm sure you're being facetious to a degree. And I know Pete made that statement about the seats. But it's funny he said that, yet when he was with the Reds in the big red machine days, there were routinely 20,000-30,000 empty seats in Riverfront Stadium. Sure they'd tip to the full house of 52,000 on opening day, big series with the Dodgers and fan appreciation day, but mostly Riverfront had plenty of seats available.
