"Victory is sweet, but a hard-fought win is even sweeter." Teays Valley Girls squeaked past Canal Winchester 43-40 on Tuesday evening, improving their league record to 6-6. Cooper McManaway led the charge with 15 points, while Tessa Horsley dominated the boards with nine rebounds.

The game was a nail-biter from start to finish. Teays Valley came out strong, leading 4-2 after Canal Winchester's first point was scored at 3:28 in the first quarter. Tessa Horsley's basket extended the Vikings' lead to 6-2, and they ended the quarter on a 15-4 run.

In the second quarter, the Indians fought back with an 11-0 run. Avery Mann scored the Vikings' first basket of the quarter at 1:51, but Canal Winchester's Ashley Cicora and Pierce Cephas hit back-to-back three-pointers to take a 19-17 lead into halftime.

After halftime, Cicora led the charge, connecting on two crucial three-pointers. The Indians and Vikings went back and forth in the third quarter, but the momentum shifted in the Vikings' favor when Tessa Horsley absorbed contact and made a bucket to split a pair of free throws, giving the Vikings a 34-30 lead entering the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter, McManaway hit a three-pointer to extend the Vikings' lead to 37-30. Canal Winchester refused to give up, with Pierce Cephas scoring a basket and converting a foul shot to make it 37-32. Cephas added another bucket to make it 37-34, but Horsley's driving bucket extended the Vikings' lead to 39-34. Ashley Cicora's put-back made it 39-36, and Cephas tied the game at 39-39.

However, Areyanna Karnsher's rebound and layup gave the Vikings a 41-39 lead. Cooper McManaway and Cami Robbins sealed the win with a pair of free throws, securing a hard-fought 43-40 victory over Canal Winchester.

Teays Valley head coach Trevor Younkin praised his team's effort, saying, "It's one of those games where we're battling for the middle of the OCC, and Canal is a talented team. They have good leadership and good seniors, and we knew we had to play well for four quarters. Unfortunately, the second quarter was bad for us, 15 to 4. Let them take the lead on us in the second half again; we are still trying to battle through some of the ups and downs of one quarter here, one quarter there. I just look at it and say, 'Hey, we have a letdown, but we have to learn from it.' But here's the thing: we had a letdown, but we fought and got a victory, so there was a lot of growth tonight, and I was proud of it."

The Vikings' win was also a milestone for their head coach, who secured his 100th career victory. "Nine years of varsity coaching at Westfall and at Teays Valley as a head coach, you have some great years and then you have some years where you’re building. We went 17 wins the last three years consecutively and this year is a year where we know we were young; we knew we weren’t going to get as many wins but to get the hundredth victory means we have been around the game a lot. I played here at Teays Valley and in college, and I've been around some great coaches and some great mentors to help push me and guide me. It's been a lot and Josh (Kellough) is my right-hand man. I don’t coach unless Josh is with me. Josh is one of those guys that keeps me on my toes. He sees things I don’t and he understands what I’m passionate about and he rolls with it. Josh has been active in the community. I have been active in the community. What’s best for the girls is what’s our focus. It's just nice to do it on senior night For Kylie. I’m glad we got a win for her and it’s a special day for someone that has devoted their days for four years. It’s a special night for her. I don’t want to take the attention away from her, but it’s nice that two things were accomplished tonight."

Teays Valley (7-13, 6-6) will travel to Newark (14-4, 9-3) for their next game on Friday. I will be making the trip out east to cover both Vikings boy’s and girl’s basketball teams!
