Tallmadge Express Preview:

Returners have Tallmadge football optimistic for 2021 season

All of the weapons are back for the wide-open spread attack as all of the skill players return this season for Tallmadge football.

With seven starters returning on defense, the Blue Devils also hope to thwart opposing teams more often.

All of this coupled with a sense of normalcy has head coach Mike Hay excited about this season.

Hay would love to vault the club’s record past the 2020 mark of 4-5.

Tallmadge Freshmen were undefeated last year until the last game of the 2020 season when they lost to some undefeated team that came to play them from the Youngstown area. This is a really good group for Tallmadge but they have lost 3-4 players to local private schools. Still expect big things from them with some starting Varsity Friday night.

Tallmadge 35, Ravenna 7

Solid win for Tallmadge. If Ravenna is one of their normal teams like most years, this will turnout even more impressive.

Still waiting to see. Not knowing much about Ravenna makes it difficult to determine. Tallmadge has a very good passing offense. They also have more depth this year than they've had for the last couple.

They should compete with anyone but knocking off Aurora, Highland, and Barberton will still be a significant challenge.

When Aurora joined the Suburban around 2015 it seemed Tallmadge would become their biggest rival. They had played in the playoffs 2 or 3 years earlier and the teams seemed to respect but not like each other. However, Barberton and Highland became the biggest league challenges. Those challenges still exist and Aurora, Barberton and Highland are still the teams to beat in the American Suburban, but Tallmadge does have very talented Junior and Senior Classes. None of the 3 teams mentioned above should overlook them. Tallmadge May make it a 4 team race this year.

Coaching turnover really hurt Tallmadge. There have been 4 coaches over that period. Vassalotti had made Tallmadge into a machine but he moved to Akron to become their head athletic director. A year we don't talk about followed. Vanderink came in and had Tallmadge headed in the right direction but was forced to move due to levy issues. Now Mike Hay has them headed in the right direction.

One thing that Vassalotti had going for him was very few players leaving for other schools. Unfortunately, that has been an issue since then. A couple solid years in a row and that shouldn't be an issue again for awhile. Tallmadge's Freshmen class this year is excellent. This year and next year look to be very good years. After struggling the last three years, the Sophomore class is having some players starting to shine.

In the past, there were probably 50. But they all moved on when their kids graduated. Didn't have a group of younger parents to follow. Don't see bedevil around too much but you are right, that would make you #3 then. Unfortunately MU82 passed away a few years ago.

Maybe if the Blue Devils are as successful as I think they will be, we can start a new generation coming here...

Tallmadge was up 49-0 at the half. Very impressive showing by the Blue Devils

Ttown is on my short list of teams I root for. I plan on going to the Coventry game. Looking like another lopsided margin.

Highland 49, Tallmadge 7

Looked like a competitive game through the first quarter + but Highland just pulled away. They were totally dominating by the 3rd quarter. Not sure if they just wore Tallmadge down or simply found weaknesses they were able to exploit. From the stands, it just looked like a bigger, stronger, faster team on the field with more depth. Tallmadge has not beaten Highland since 2012 and will need to make significant improvement by next season if they want to end the streak.

Tallmadge 27, Revere 7

Solid win by Tallmadge tonight. Took a while to get going. Trailed 7-3 at half. Even though they were trailing, they looked to be the better team throughout the first half. Couple timely plays kept the Blue Devils out of the endzone for the first half. Second half, things started clicking. Still a struggle but ending up winning comfortably.
