The Preble Shawnee Arrows burst to an early 14-2 lead and sailed to a 51-35 road victory over Carlisle in a game that both teams saw as a crucial resume builder in Southwest Ohio's Division III North Sectional.
The Arrows raise their season mark to 11-1 while Carlisle drops to 8-3.
"I think they are probably one of the best Division III teams in the state," Indians head coach John Giles said of Preble Shawnee. "They all go very hard on the defensive end."
Arrows head man Jake Turner, whose team is giving up just 37 points per game this season explained. "We want to get after people. We try to make it hard for them on the offensive end. It's all about wanting to guard, competing. I believe every guy on the court for us is giving everything they've got on the defensive end. If you can defend like that for 32 minutes, you are going to have a chance to win every game."
Junior Mason Shrout showed his versatility early. The 6'5" Shooting guard, averaging just under 25 ppg drove the lane for the Arrows' second hoop of the night and finished the first stanza with 4 assists to go with 7 points as Shawnee bolted to a 19-6 lead.
"He is very impressive because of how well-rounded he is as a player," noted Giles. "He is a good defender. He can score, pass, handle the ball and defend. Whoever gets him at the next level will be getting a very good player."
Turner agrees. "He is an overall player. Does everything. He makes the right decisions. He wants to get his teammates involved. He is not selfish and makes his teammates better. He finds a way to get them good shots."
Shrout unofficially finished with 18 on the night and was helped out by 13 from 6'1" Sophomore Isaac Blankenship with 13. Senior point guard Cooper Roell controlled the pace at both ends of the court.
Coach Turner smiled, "He (Roell) does a lot of things that do not show up in the stats. He is a very, very important person for this team. He does everything. He's consistent. You know what you're going to get every minute, every game. We ask a lot of him. He understands everything we want to do. Very smart. A high IQ player. And defensively, he can lock 'em down."
There are 20 teams in the Division III Southwest District North Sectional. Both of these teams anticipate high seeds and know this game was important in that arena.
"You know," explained Turner, "You never want to look ahead. We knew this was going to be a big game for seeding down the road. Big environment. Let's not sugarcoat it. Big game. Both teams brought good crowds. This is a great resume win for us. That's a very good team over there. They are very well coached and have a very good chance to make a deep run in the tournament."
Giles agreed. "We're halfway through our season at 8-3. We have to play better than we did tonight, but we are going into our Division play in the Southwestern Buckeye League. Winning that is a goal. We came out in a tie for the championship last year. We hope to win it outright this year."
After the first quarter, the Indians played the Arrows to a near draw the rest of the game. Shawnee used a combination 1-2-2 three-quarter court zone press, dropping into half court man to man to force 6 Indian turnovers in the opener. From there, Carlisle cut the turnovers to just 8 over the next three periods.
Preble led 23-13 at the half, and 37-22 at the end of 3.
The Arrows have two Western Ohio Athletic Conference games this week before a matchup with Oakwood at the Beacon Orthopaedics Flyin' to the Hoop Invitational at Trent Arena in Kettering on Sunday, January 15th.
The Indians host SWBL West Division foe Eaton Friday night before 3 straight road games.
