Summit County Football- 2025

Don't have much info. My moniker, FirestoneFan actually goes way back to the Firestone wrestling district. I went to Field HS and my kids went to Alliance. Sorry.

APS took 6 minutes to hire a new superintendent and will take 6 months to hire a high school football coach.
I feel bad for those young men on the team. I do hope one or a few of the seniors are taking on a leadership role within the team and getting them out to the field and the weight room. If so, it may be a blessing for them as they head into the season with strong peer leadership and a cohesive team bond that will push them in a positive direction.

Talking to the people on the upper west side, they had serious issues with hiring a guy who wasn't on the previous staff, not from the area (they tell me he was an assistant at Mooney and from Youngstown), he wasn't bring back anyone from the previous staff yet had no coaching staff to put in place, and the demographic was wrong. The feeling in the community was that there was a guy on the staff who's been an assistant for 15+ years, from the community, and is an alum who was right for the job. The board listened to the community.

Got it. What took so long?

Mitchell hung on and didn't resign till late March. They couldn't replace him till he officially stepped down. They started the process after that so a May board meeting makes sense. If I had to guess, Mitchell held on so the school would feel compelled to hire one of his guys. That is purely speculation on my part, though. Probably had a suspicion the admin was going to try to oust the whole staff and go in a different direction. It's hard to build a new staff in April so the whole staff would have returned under his guy. There is definitely a power struggle going on and Mitchell was well thought of in that community over there. Either way, it looks ugly and clear that the athletic admin and the community/board are on very different pages.

All that said, I don't think this should be a poor reflection on the guy that was denied by the board.

Copy/paste for those of us who can't afford an ABJ subscription? :)

No, it is a poor reflection on APS.

Agree. It is very much geared towards just out running or overpowering their opponents. A very simplistic approach. A my athletes are better than your athletes philosophy. But well coached and well disciplined teams with solid athletes can give them a game. And sometimes beat them like Walsh did in their first meeting last season and what Avon did to them. Of course, the other side of the coin is that their simplistic approach paid major dividends in their second match up with Walsh. Walsh's scheme which is heavier on timing and execution had a few missteps that caused them to lose in the horrible weather that night. Plus, seeing Walsh a second time makes them easier to defend. Seeing Hoban a second time doesn't really change much about your game plan.
Let’s not mention the age of some of their players over the years, nobody wants to talk about that
