IMPACT PLAYERS: Green’s coaching staff wanted Antonio Martin to play mostly freshman football last season. But because of some injuries, Martin ended up playing a crucial role alongside brother Trey Martin as a slot receiver and cornerback on a team that reached a
state semifinal. He caught 72 passes for 479 yards and three TDs. This season, he’ll be all over the field offensively while playing safety on defense. “He’s a kid that can go 1-on-1 on the outside but he’s carrying the ball and playing some slot receiver as well,” Mark Geis said. … Zach Baglia and Josh Just played a lot of snaps as sophomore slot receivers last year and now step into bigger roles in Green’s empty spread offense as juniors. Baglia caught a TD pass in the
regional final win against Massillon. … Michael Schaal started playing some snaps on defense late last season as a 170-pound freshman and ended up making a nice contribution, including a sack in the
regional semifinal win against Wooster. Schaal now is a 6-foot, 210-pound package of nastiness slated to start at left guard and defensive end. “He’s our strongest kid,” Geis said. “And he’s not nice.” … LB Matt Galemmo competed for playing time most of last season as a sophomore before becoming a mainstay during Green’s playoff run. He played one of his best games against Massillon with 5.5 tackles and a sack. Galemmo also could get carries at running back if the Bulldogs come out of their empty look. … Cody Seward played well at corner last season as a junior before an ankle injury hampered him late in the year.

WHAT’S NEW: Senior Robby Klockner (5-11, 170) and junior Samino Manson (6-2, 176) are competing to replace three-year starting QB Trevor Van Horn, and Geis likes what he’s seen from both. Klockner, a Green kid who transferred back from Hoban, is a traditional pocket passer, while the physical Manson is more of a running threat who backed up Van Horn last season. “I would never say both of them aren’t going to play because I could see both having an opportunity,” Geis said. … Jarrett Taylor was a starter at forward on
Green’s regional semifinal basketball team as a sophomore and now takes his 6-foot-4 frame to the football field as a wide receiver. “He played so many big basketball games, you almost feel like he’s a returning starter, too,” Geis said. ... Junior Anthony Manderine is another slot receiver with a chance to play a big role.
OUTLOOK: Green hadn’t registered a winning season since 2012 before last year’s memorable run. The Bulldogs return only seven players with starting experience from that state semifinal team. “You lose so many key guys that weren’t just there for one year, but for three years,” Geis said. “But another part of it is a lot of these young kids gained a lot of experience last year whether they were in a game or not. They got to practice for an extra five weeks last year. So we saw a lot of young kids grow up over the course of the season and I really feel like the feel we have in camp is that these guys want to prove themselves. It’s their turn now.” … Geis is sticking with the five-wide offense, but it could look a little different this year. “We will be way more multiple in our empty (set) than we were last year,” he said. “I think last year we just made sure we moved fast and got it to our guys. But we’re going to do a little more out of it this year.”
