The 1st day proved to be exciting. Too many things to highlight for the time I have available this morning, but the boys' 4x800m stands out as the classic expected with Lexington turning back Dublin Jerome for the win, 7:37.65 to 7:38.51.

In the 100m, Jamier Averette-Brown (Wayne) led the qualifiers, lowering his PB to 10.36 (+1.5) for a new Ohio sophomore record, taking down the 10.41 by John Marshall's all-time great, Jonathan Burrell set at the Ranger Relays in April 1991. That moves him to #3 just behind Jordan Gross (Vandalia Butler) at 10.35. Unfortunately, Gross false-started out of the Region 4 meet in the 100m. Chaz Sakala (Delaware Hayes) had a huge PB behind Jamier in the same heat,, going 10.40 for #8 all-time.

Div 2
Defending state PV champ, Grant Harrison (New Richmond), won with a state meet record-breaking vault of 16' 7", taking down Coty Cobb's (Middletown Madison) D2 meet record of 16' 6 1/4" set back in 2015.

2025 list-leader in the shot put, Derrick Taylor (South Point), took the shot title with a 65' 6" put.

Div 3
Cade Shellhaas
(Ansonia, So.) had several big PB's, eventually clearing 16' 6" for a new D3 state meet record, taking down the 17-year old best of 16' 1 1/2" of Heath Nickles (Columbus Grove).

More later this evening.

While I'm early on in the process of updating all-time lists, what is becoming apparent to me is that this was the best quality track championship I've ever seen on the track. There have been other meets with better performances, but for depth of quality, this was the best. The weather cooperated for Saturday's finals, and the athletes took advantage of it.

The two big performances from yesterday's D1 meet among all of them were the girls' 800m with Celia Schulte's (Hilliard Davidson, Jr.) solo record attack on the not only her recent D1 state record, but the now 56-year old all-time Ohio record of 2:04.5 MT by Hoover's Nancy Shafer back in August of 1969. Schulte split 58+ at the 400m with no one willing to try and go with her. Powering through a 2nd lap of 66 seconds, Schulte came up just short with her new Division 1 State & Meet record of 2:04.65! This moves her to #2 Ohio all-time, and #9 on the 2025 U.S. HS list on Milesplit.

The other highlight was the last event, the boys' 4x400m, with Vandalia Butler dominating a great field. Winning with a fantastic state D1 record of 3:12.06, Butler moves to #3 all-time, trailing only Glenville's '03 team (3:10.66) and Trotwood-Madison's '08 team (3:11.33). Both those races were at the Adidas Outdoor & Nike Outdoor Nationals, respectively, in those years. This was the fastest in OHSAA history.

More to come.

Was impressed by Oak Harbor finishing third as a team in Boys DII. They didn't have one guy carry the whole team but had a lot of high level contributors. Narrowly missing out to Brookville and Glenville.

If Bluffton was D3 this year like they have been for every year until this season, no doubt they win it all. Just absolutely dominated in D2 boys.

Also Huron winning D2 boys last year then D3 this year after losing Beau Harkelroad to graduation was very impressive.

And now we can see where it all shakes out with five divisions.

To say Isabella Zahn (Coldwater, Sr.) was a one-woman wrecking crew on Saturday is an understatement. She devastated the competition in the 200m & 400m in all divisions. Her 200m time of 23.04 sec. trails only behind Abby Steiner's 2018 22.73 sec. at the state meet as both performer & performance. To do this after moving to #3 all-time on the Ohio girls' 400m list with her 52.89 sec. win is astounding. She also picked up a win in the long jump on Friday with an 18' 8 1/2" jump into a -0.7 mps wind.

Not a fan.
Looks like 12% will be DI, remaining 4 balanced as equal as possible. I have D5 cutoff 113/114 for boys and around 110 for girls. It will depend on how many teams OHSAA say there are. I based off of the numbers used for this year. I haven't looked at cutoffs for other divisions.

Top 8 All-Ohio finishers are most likely still going to be the same caliber of results we see in the 3-division format. Placers 9-16 may be off the mark slightly, but I do not foresee a huge drop off in All-Ohio level times. Just look at how deep every event was this year across divisions.

If I had to guess, I think D1 will actually have the biggest drop off. A lot of the schools represented in D1 at the state meet this year are on the smaller side and will likely be D2 next year in the five division format. D1 having less schools along with also offering lacrosse and boys volleyball, it is likely their podium may not be as impressive as a lot of D2 and D3 podiums in the five division format.

The smaller D1 schools were the ones that were supposed to get the most benefit from expansion. Maybe that won’t be the case? Wouldn’t it be odd if the biggest schools got the most benefit ?
