State Duals

Interesting early D1 takeaways

1. No Perrysburg, opens the door for Medina Highland

2. Most competitive projected matchup is Springboro vs Harrison. Dubstat projector has it 36 - 28 Springboro. Harrison had an early season win against Moeller 37-36, so the winner should be seeded ahead of Moeller at State Duals.

Any idea why no Perrysburg?

Why do we have to go all the way to wauseon??? Ugh! The boys will be commuting longer than it takes to run two duals!
You don't have to go. No one is forcing you. Someone has to offer to host. Looks like Wauseon stepped up.

You can hav a great attitude, its a great honor and adventure, not everyone gets this, not everyone qualifies. Your team may never get there again, who knows. Maybe just embrace and enjoy it. So what, you are in a gym all day. That is the place you are supposed to be.

Some day you will miss it. I promise.

Yikes, just trying to get the conversation started, didn’t realize I was going to get a finger wagged at me like a toddler. As it sits , I can’t go because of work, but might have been able to go for two duals if it wasn’t in Indiana. I’d love to embrace it and enjoy it…instead I’ll be at the “Coal Mine”. Anyone know what is best for live updates?

Did you just say Wauseon equated to being in Indiana? Michigan is a bit closer to Wauseon than Indiana lol.

Sorry to hear you won't be able to support your team in person. It seems Ohio is lacking a place to host all classes in one spot as well, or the cost is not worth it.

Here's my projections for every district bracket.
  • D1 has 8 clear favorites
  • D2 is much more competitive
    • Gallia Academy should have a handful of competitive duals
    • I have Clear Fork over Wauseon at Norwalk (this one even surprised me)
    • Elgin, Garaway, or Northmor could all win their half-bracket at Heath.
  • D3 has 7 clear favorites. Miami East and Versailles is a toss-up at Troy.
Some of the outcomes will depend on who is healthy and weight class maneuvering from the coaches.

Baumspage will have results for regionals and state. I believe someone usually broadcasts the finals. But, I think, its up to the schools to get that going.

Harrison not sniffing Moeller or Springboro. Moe had football guys out first dual. Moe should be 1 and Springboro 2. I saw Moe this week at GIT they have solid guys at about every weight and they said they didn’t even bring all their guys.

**Darby: Dublin Coffman and Olentangy Liberty are the likely teams to qualify, Dublin Coffman prohibitively so. Depending on where Olentangy Liberty is personnel wise, Marysville could give them a run, Olentangy could have if they were in the other half-bracket (Marysville beat Olentangy in a January dual meet because Olentangy doesn't have a 106 or 113).
**Kettering Fairmont: Springboro and Moeller are the safe bets to qualify, and the two most balanced teams in the district. Put it this way, the lineup that Springboro had at MBC and Moeller had at Perrysburg is clearly ahead of what Harrison put out at Top Gun and Elder's best iteration between its tournaments this season.
**Hoover: Massillon Perry and Brecksville will qualify. These teams are nationally ranked for a reason and have tremendous lineup coverage
**Perrysburg: St. Edward will qualify, and I think Highland is favored to qualify. Avon Lake has some decent kids, and could pinch the spot depending on where Highland is personnel wise.

Seeds for the final eight ... (1) St. Edward (2) Massillon Perry (3) Brecksville ... (4-6) Dublin Coffman, Moeller, and Springboro in some order - it might be that order (7-8) Olentangy Liberty and Highland in some order, if Highland gets pinched by Avon Lake, Avon Lake is the clear eight

**Gallia Academy: in terms of Beaver Local, they either lacked the points from last year's post-season to qualify, or they chose not to participate ... I think Steubenville is the favorite in their bracket based on the lineup coverage they had at OVAC (Indian Valley has some talented kids, but I think lacks lineup coverage), and then the other qualifier is a complete pick'em (and also a non-entity for the final eight)
**Kenston: Buckeye is a clear favorite to qualify based on their lineup coverage at MIT and the Gorman, and my instinct is to say Perry-Lake County is the other favorite to qualify. Though Perry lacks star power, they got a kid that could win multiple matches in the district tournament at almost every weight.
**Norwalk: Wauseon or Clear Fork for one state spot; pick'em between Col DeSales, Perkins, and possibly Wapak for the other ... As the highest seed, Wauseon is given the first crack at hosting their regional bracket.
**Wilmington: Bishop Watterson is the favorite for one spot; I think Kettering Alter is probably favored for the other spot

In terms of how the final eight would be seeded, I think Bishop Watterson (if they have their projected lineup) is the safest best to be the top seed. I like Buckeye for the second seed. Then it's preferences for three-to-seven with the qualifier out of West Holmes my early pick as the eight seed.

**Heath: anyone's guess in the bracket hosted by Northmor; then I would pick Barnesville to qualify out of the lower bracket based on their lineup coverage at the OVAC meet
**Independence: Waynedale by a mile in their bracket. I think Rootstown might have the second best dual team lineup coverage in the pool of teams, but they're in the Waynedale regional bracket. In the lower regional bracket, my instinct is to pick Lake Catholic even though they have clear holes in their lineup, as I'm not sure if the other teams in their bracket have enough lineup coverage (Trinity could lineup to nullify one of Lake Catholic's better wrestlers, but they have similar linup coverage issues to Lake Catholic)
**Rossford: Delta by a mile in their bracket. In the lower bracket, I'm not sure what to expect since the Milan Edison has the best roster talent but clear lineup coverage issues; Genoa has some talent, but not optimal coverage; might the pick be Liberty Center (?)
**Troy: Graham by a mile in their bracket; then Miami East or Versailles in the other one

Looking to seeding for the final eight ... (1) Graham (2) Delta (3) Waynedale ... then 4-8 will come down to which teams exactly qualify

Qualify based on prior year's non-senior finishes in post season. So, if you have a Fresh/Soph/Jun qualify for districts, you get so many points. Win a match or two, you get more. Place you get even more, etc.
Thank you! I assumed it was that way but wanted to make sure. Seems to be the way other coaches associations run it as well. Any idea if the OHSAA is going to add classes to wrestling like the other sports?

I don't have any official knowledge of anything, but would say the numbers do not support expansion, but money is always a driving factor.

Take that for what it is worth...which is not much.

I don't see the OHSAA adding divisions to wrestling anytime soon. Wrestling is experiencing growth, but we're still not back to the all-time highs we saw 10+ years ago. Even the girls participation would likely have to at least double before a division is added. They're currently at about half of the boys numbers in division 1.

You are underestimating the single greatest factor to any decision OHSAA makes.

OAC has 4 divisions correct? I'm surprised that doesn't mirror all the way up.

More divisions means more wrestlers which means more Moms and Dads buying ticket and concessions and more kids getting their championships. Also, those kids don't drive. Simple
Besides, there are far more youth wrestlers than we have in HS.
I was just hinting the OHSAA could have a similar mindset to match 4 as well for the reasons you mentioned.

No problem but like I have said in the past, like it or not, our current numbers justify 2 divisions rather than 4.
I'm used to just 1 already. Do like having 3 in Ohio for the local schools near me. 4 would probably be even better to grow/keep the traction going at a few of them that are big basketball supporting schools.
