St. Edward Football 2025

Sports-wise, yes I think having hockey back into their title winning ways would be at the top of my list too. They compete and they've come close but they need to seal the deal and it is only made worse with St. Ignatius racking up titles in that time. I believe basketball will be back to what it has been, I just trust Flan to do that. Ignatius had a good coach with a great team the past few years but have graduated their best players. Being more competitive for titles in "secondary" sports like soccer, rugby, and volleyball would be nice too. I remember being at an alumni meeting where Paul Michalko spoke and he said when he first got the job he said a goal was to win a title in every sport and I think for a boys school our size that's something that can be accomplished. Not every year but you should be in the mix for several each year.
michalko was a always on a power trip , dude fired a state champ track coach after winning our first titles and state champ hockey coach and we have yet to win again. We also ruled rugby for awhile. Don’t get me wrong I’ll take the success of our football program over both lol.

Iv said it before , and I might get some hate for this but coach flan has underperformed, way to many final 4s and big time recruits to only have 2x titles. He’s a great man and everything In between but he’s lost his edge. 2 titles in 20 yrs when the wildcats have just as many now.

Good points and message but I will say, Coach Flan could have had one in 2008 had Delvon Roe and Sterba go down with season ending injuries. That team was loaded.

The 2014 team was very lucky to win the title with the non-shot clock rule as Upper Arlington kept the ball away the entire game and limited players like Nichols and Hamilton from taking over with their athleticism. If you recall, it took a miracle 3 point shot from Hamilton to win that game.

Also, Covid ruined the chances of a title game in or around 2020 or so. I’m sure other eagle fans can point to many other situations as I type this from my phone while watching the Cavs game!

Yes, Coach Flannery has had a wealth of a talent come through the halls and should have won more state championships. No question. Basketball is funny though. Things happen and teams get hot at the right time and others just have an off night. Easy to say, as I wouldn’t say the same with the football team as they have been blessed with some ridiculous talent over the past 20 years.

With that said, I do expect a lot more, very soon from the basketball program but I do understand the influence of the AAU basketball scene has changed the landscape of high school basketball and the top talent just isn’t coming to St. Edward anymore, even with a coach on USA basketball’s roster, in Coach Flannery.

Go Eagles! Hope to see the soccer team progress next. I have two potential kids that will have a tough decision to make in a few years.

Curious what the numbers are for graduating class now. How much attrition is there normally after 4 yrs 250 down to 175-200 id guess.
Probably in that range. The current OHSAA EMIS data (using 2023 numbers) has us at 657 in grades 9-11, so about 219 per class. The vast majority of attrition will take place after freshman year, which is why I think using grades 10-12 would provide a more accurate depiction of school enrollment (not that it matters for us).

Looks like some Eagles are getting offers after the showcase earlier this morning like Makhi Boone, Braylon Adams, and Brodon Moore.

Thanks for the updates...This time of the year is so slow.

Wondering if Ohio River Boy will chime in or wait until the season starts. He was a lot of fun for three years 🤔 ;) A couple other memorable posters have been absent but expect to hear from them soon....

Montorie Foster ('20) signed as an UDFA with the Seahawks. Good luck to him on making the team. I don't believe there are any other Eagles currently in the NFL ranks. Andrew Dowell was with the Saints for a number of years but was released last year.

Ignatius has a stranglehold on the hs hockey world similar to Eds wrestling, Xavier swimming, etc.

It is very hard to realistically compete when they have 5+ teams and siphoning all of the local talent

We still have more titles then them maybe not for long and an alumni base to right the ship.

I totaled it up, 10 players have gotten D-1 football offers on this years team with 3 months still to go.
That’s either one more or the same as the 2023 class did going into the season

Speaking of rugby, the Eagle ruggers will advance to the state final in two weeks to square off with #1 nationally ranked Ignatius. The Cats are 3-0 against the Eagles this year and will be heavy favorites once again, but perhaps a return to the championship game after a few year hiatus is a sign things are going back in the right direction. In the meantime, both teams will compete in the national championship tournament this weekend. Ignatius is the 1 seed in the national bracket while Ed's is the 8 seed in the Tier II bracket.

It was always a sport for back up football players when I was there. No hate to the sport it’s great and tough as hell but everyone who couldn’t see the field on the fb team played rugby and made it their identity, the non stop rugby is tougher nonsense always irritated me.

This team from Puerto Rico has us on there schedule for October 11 (we show Football North that weekend)
Interesting. Based out of San Juan. They played IMG Academy in a spring game in 2023 (
), losing 42-7 to IMGs varsity team, which IIRC is not IMGs top team. Seems like a "school" based off the IMG model.

Maybe a home and home? Would be interesting to be the San Eduardo Águilas for a weekend.

Post from the Puerto Rican team coach is already down. Hard to imagine we don't keep playing Football North instead.

Very interested in how the Puerto Rican team works though. Their coach (Rodriguez) seems all in on it. In my experience, the Puerto Rican community in Cleveland are, and have always been, big football fans. Baseball still being number one by far though. The language barrier isn't as much of a problem anymore for a casual fan so I imagine the sport has grown in popularity down there recently.

I wonder if the coach is trying to get mainland kids to move down there or if he's trying to home grow talent. Either way, a really interesting program. Very hard to find any info about them, but they don't seem to be a Bishop Sycamore type school. But I guess any school that tries to imitate IMG is Bishop Sycamore in some way or another.

The cost and time required to fly to all your games, with all your equiptment, seems totally impractical.

I can't imagine bypassing good high school football states like Florida, Georgia or Texas to come to Ohio (also a good football state). I don't think Canada North goes much further than the border states of Ontario.

North plays teams from Maryland and Virginia a lot (in addition to Ohio), many are neutral site games. But that's about as far as they'll go.

I’d much rather pay a local school than play these meaningless teams from Canada. Zero fans , zero motivation / fan engagement.

Have 1 game a year behind the school vs a local smaller school . I know I know not alot of teams are willing to do it. Still
