St. Edward Basketball 2024-2025

Next up are the wildcats. Can the eagles keep it closer than last time? Sounds like they live and die by the 3 ball. Where is Tom Pritchard and Delvon Roe leading the eagles with down low points and working the inside to easy wins.

We haven’t had a big time bb talent in yrs……. I don’t see that changing honestly, the basketball program is trending downward. Eagle high is wrestling and football now.

I’d love to see hockey and bb get back on top but I don’t see it happening with the talent the wildcats have unfortunately. We have great coaches and schemes but the top end talent in those sports are going elsewhere now .

100% correct. If you don't go out and look for talent you will continue to an average or below average program.

Things will likely flip back favoring Eds but some at Ignatius thought football would only be temporary and Cats have been dominated by the Eagles for almost a decade now.

Eagles ended the regular season with a one-point loss to SJJ and finish with a 14-8 record. First game of the post-season is on Wednesday against Elyria (17-5). With the reduced D1 field it only takes two wins to get out of the district, but would it be shocking to see an opening round exit against an Elyria program that is usually pretty solid? I'd have to go back through the history books to see when the last time a St. Edward basketball team was knocked off in the first round. Even if we can put together two wining performances to escape the district, the Wildcats will be waiting in the Sweet 16...a highly improbable outcome of victory.

In other sporting news the hockey team was upset by Padua over the weekend, ending their season earlier than expected. The hopes for the class of 2025 of continuing the school's consecutive streak of OHSAA championships would seemingly lie with the wrestling team (I don't know that we have any legit shot in the Spring sports). They are the odds on favorite, but should get some stiff competition from Massillon Perry or Perrysburg. EagleFan may have to correct me, but I believe the last senior class to not win an OHSAA title in any sport was the class of '93.

I’m hearing the game is delayed due to a roof leak? How does that happen?
water .. usually rain water .. builds up on a roof .. when said roof has potential leaking issues .. then said rain water leaks from roof into building.. in this case the gymnasium

Eagles avoid the first round "upset." Both teams were evenly matched from what I saw. Kelsheimer's first-half buzzer beating three was big to get them within 1 at the half after being down 10 at one point in the second quarter. We shot poorly from the charity stripe most of the game, but Knox was able to hit two crucial ones down the stretch to make it a two possession game in the final seconds. Hopefully getting the extra game in Lakewood's gym will pay dividends when we square off against Heights on Saturday. They handled a pretty good Perrysburg team and we will need to be efficient from the perimeter once again to advance.

Haha enjoy the win AZ! Glad you’re able to enjoy the ride. I have posted that the eagles are a long way from the glory years and tonight showed. A big weekend coming up for the wildcats in basketball and hockey while the eagles will be active in wrestling.

Not sure where the baseball teams stand but football can’t come any faster.

Really need to have some serious talks about the future of the program. Flan is not going to be around forever. Just doesn't seem like basketball is all that important at the school right now.

This isn't a bad team, but they haven't met their expectations for quite some time now.

Things will likely flip back favoring Eds but some at Ignatius thought football would only be temporary and Cats have been dominated by the Eagles for almost a decade now.
Seems like, for the most part at least, if one school is dominant in one sport, the other is dominant in the other. Maybe some recency bias there but I can think of a few stretches over the last 20 or so years.

the gap in football is cavernous and doesn’t seem to be closing. Next season looks bad for Ignatius again.

Basketball looks that way too for Eds but that could close considerably when Friery and Woidke graduate.

Scores from this yr:

J-V: Ig 55, Ed 54 ; Ig 58, Ed 44

Fr: Ig 54, Ed 24; Ed 53, Ig 46

Fr: Ig 54, Ed 49; Ig 56, Ed 44; Ig. 56, Ed 53.

While this is Flan's 29th season as head coach, he's still only 51 years old. 22 district championships in those 29 seasons along with 11 trips to Columbus and 2 titles. This year was, arguably, the least talented team in the Flan era and they made a sweet 16 run. We are three seasons removed from our last final four run and, of course, the 2020 season that got cut short with our best team since the 2014 championship team. 5 losses in a row to the Wildcats, who appear poised to go back-to-back, is exacerbating the issues in the program.

I look at it this way: where is the program going to be in 5 years? Will we be back to consistent trips to Columbus? Right now I don't think that's the case. Other programs across the area are making inroads where we aren't. There's a lot of complacently in the program. That's deserved considering the success but I naturally worry about the long term implications of thinking on the past. The past can only tell so much about the future.

Right now the rival is far ahead of us in a sport we have historically dominated them in. The only win against them being a freshman team win. These same conversations are being had among the Ignatius faithful when it comes to football. We are dominating them, there's a light at the end of the tunnel for them but it's surrounded by doubt, the same doubts I have started to have about our basketball program.
Maybe it is time for the change
Flan can stay as long as he wants because he has earned it. This is what makes the situation so complicated. Flan has his ways that have been so successful over the last 30 years, and is one of the best coaches in the state by far. There needs to be talent in the program, and there is, but it's clear we are a tier below the elite teams in the state. What does a district championship mean if we lose the regional final by 25+? That hasn't happened in the last 30 years. The program is at a huge crossroads right now and there is no clear path.

Assuming no large ingess or egress of talent from either program, the Eagles will be better next year and the Wildcats will take a step back.

Their two best players are coming back next year and should be better. It does seem like some of the inner city kids are either staying home, or playing elsewhere which is interesting.

It goes back to EaglePride01's point though, the program was so successful for 30 years. That success was a natural pull for kids who wanted to play basketball in the area. We were the premier program in the area for the better part of three decades. What makes me feel pessimistic is how quickly things have flipped and how set up you seem to be for the future while we look back and hope our former success can keep us going. Football was a long process at Eds and the recent domination is the byproduct of the massive culture change that started at Eds in 2010. This is not meant to be some subtle dig on Ignatius, but Ignatius got complacent with football and were happy with the normal way of doing things, which was completely justifiable considering the circumstances (Chuck Kyle, etc.). I see the basketball program at Eds being where Ignatius football was around 2018. Still relevant but becoming more apparent that the glory days were coming to an end, and the old school way of doing things just wasn't going to work anymore. Ignatius didn't seem to have a solid plan in place for the inevitable, I hope my school also sees the parallels for our basketball program.

I may be overreacting but it's getting obvious that we're a tier below you guys in basketball and it happened in what seems like a blink of the eye. The 30 year history of great runs seems to be disappearing quickly. Sure the talent level may level off in the coming years but the cultures of the successful programs have changed and that is way more significant than closing talent gaps in my opinion. What worked 10 years ago doesn't necessarily work now.
