Record $305 million spent on trading cards in June​

An all-time online sales record for sports and trading card transactions was set in June, with more than $305 million spent on the hobby across the major auction houses and marketplaces.

According to Card Ladder’s Industry page, the $305.7 million total is the highest for a single month in the data tool’s history. That total tops the previous high of $303.22 million in March.

June’s total will likely continue to increase throughout early July as additional sales are added to the final tally.

eBay testing extended bidding for trading cards​

Online marketplace eBay is testing an extended bidding feature for the trading card category, according to a notice on the company’s website.

Listed under a guide to buying on the platform, the test involves “extending auction durations by 2 minutes when a bid is placed in the last 2 minutes of an auction.”

Testing is currently limited to select items in the trading card category, the notice reads.

I rarely bid on eBay as I do not like their system. It is really annoying to watch an auction coming to an end with almost no bids sitting around $8. I have $12 as my high bid. Kind of feeling good about it in the last 10 seconds. Then wham!! It goes up to $35 in the blink of any eye.

The one site I do bid on has a system where every time there is a bid with less than a minute left, one minute gets added. It prevents the crazy skyrocketing of prices in the last seconds.

Brett Lemieux, a sports collectibles dealer who ran Mister Mancave, wrote a lengthy post in the Autographs 101 Facebook group admitting he'd sold more than four million items and brought in over $350 million, much of it on forgeries. The post, which was revealed by Sports Collectors Digest, details how forging autographs and holographs became an "addiction" and claimed he was responsible for a huge portion of the autographed merchandise on the sports collectibles market.

"It was an addiction," Lemieux wrote. "How many items can I sell and give a front of a huge company. I did it for years. Purchased millions of dollars of legit items. Mixed it until [name withheld] found the hologram connect. Then I had the bank roll to buy even more. Do more signings. Every one item from a signing turned into 10,000. And it was certified. 95% of the [Patrick] Mahomes and Aaron [Judge] on the market are sold by me. Basically every autograph sold in the last 25 years you should have it looked at. It's fake and someone sold it to you other than me. I wish I had the exact dollar number of money taken in from this and I'll go to my grave never knowing. I kept this secret from everyone."
